The wonderful Wisconsin-born soprano Emily Birsan -- now one of Chicago's indispensable classical artists -- returns following her exquisite "St. Cecilia Mass"  for another glorious French confection: Francis Poulenc's fabulous setting of the GLORIA, written in 1960 for the Boston Symphony....and once again, our LSO Assistant Conductor James Wilson will assemble a magnificent symphonic chorus for the occasion! A garland of classic American Holiday favorites graces the evening's first half, culminating in another brilliant return: La Crosse's own piano prodigy Andre Previn Peck, in Prokofiev's glittering First Concerto. John Finnegan's Christmas Sing-Along caps off what will be the perfect Holiday celebration.

Jubilant choirs in high church halls, hardly anything reminds us more vividly of the deeper meaning of Christmas: the birth of a child and the promise of a happy future. And so the NDR Vokalensemble groups its Christmas concert around Johann Sebastian Bach’s motto »Singet dem Herrn ein neues Lied«. Bach has two choirs compete with each other in the praise of God. And the magnificent final fugue »Alles was Odem hat, lobe den Herrn« with its virtuoso colouratura really hardly gives the singers a chance to catch their breath.

Celebrate the season with the glad musical tidings of the Champaign-Urbana Symphony Orchestra’s beloved holiday concert, a favorite family event for music lovers of all ages. CUSO is joined by the University of Illinois Chamber Singers and Oratorio Society to perform Gloria of Francis Poulenc, a spectacular work for large chorus and full orchestra. The angelic voices of the Central Illinois Youth Chorus will be featured in music by John Williams from the film Home Alone. "The Fantastic" is the theme of this season's chamber concerts in the Apollosaal, based on the season's first opera premiere, Offenbach's Les Contes d'Hoffmann. Musicians of the Staatskapelle Berlin have developed programs that approach this idea and concept, which play a key role in music, in a variety of ways. Ranging from the Baroque to the present day, with a particular focus on the Romantic period, featuring Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms, and the multitalented E.T.A. Hoffmann (who, in an idealized form, became the title character in Offenbach's opera), "The Fantastic" will be explored with a variety of chamber music works in diverse ensembles.

The latter prevails, and before the Revolutionary Guards ban the order, the sisters take their vows - except for the absent prioress and Blanche, who cannot withstand the pressure and flees. When the Camelites, condemned to death for counter-revolutionary conspiracy, go to the scaffold, Blanche joins the condemned.

This is how Sergei Rachmaninoff, at 20, the prime age for great emotions, describes it in a magnificent tone poem which – another enigma – is extremely rarely performed despite its great beauty.

A cherished presence on Washington Performing Arts stages, Midori returns with pianist Ieva Jokubaviciute for a program that traverses lyricism, passion, and brilliance. Anchored by Beethoven’s radiant “Spring” Sonata, the recital interweaves romantic nuance in the works of Clara and Robert Schumann, Poulenc’s bold contrasts, and the virtuosic sweep of Schubert’s Rondo Brillante—all brought to life with Midori’s musical insight and expressive power. A new work written for Midori by New York-based violinist and composer Che Buford combines violin and electronics. Buford describes their compositions as exploring the possibilities of timbre and acoustical phenomena and connecting them to elements of place, memory, poetry, and the quotidian.

For 70 years now, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) has been a regular guest at the Kassel Music Days – this time with the Russian conductor and harpsichordist Maxim Emelyanichev and a multifaceted program centered around the French Baroque. Two suites by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau will be performed, as well as a Baroque-inspired ballet suite by Igor Stravinsky. Audiences can also look forward to a harpsichord concerto that is not yet 100 years old. Maxim Emelyanichev is considered a rising star of early music, approaching his work with tremendous curiosity and musical passion. He will even be at the harpsichord himself for Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty concerto.

A harpsichord concerto that's not even 100 years old? Yes, Francis Poulenc's "Concert champêtre" spices up the Baroque sound with modern harmonies, and the liaison is a resounding success. The suite theme is also explored in a unique way in this concert: two old pieces, one new – where freshness isn't a matter of era. 20th-century France looks back to the old masters of the Baroque: The conductor who brings this special perspective to the hr-Sinfonieorchester's "Baroque+" series is Maxim Emelyanychev. The Russian is considered a rising star of early music because he approaches his work without any affectation, but with tremendous curiosity and a true musical pulse. He conducts historically informed performance ensembles as well as large symphony orchestras and says: "I want to approach the music with a fresh perspective, but with the aim of performing it as it was possible back then." In Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty "Concert champêtre," Emelyanychev himself will be at the harpsichord; he loves leading an ensemble from the keyboard: "It's a completely different connection with the orchestra than when you're just conducting. You feel like part of the whole."

A tragic opera for soprano and orchestra in one act, lasting around forty minutes, Poulenc's La voix humaine was written in 1958 to a text by Jean Cocteau. This long and moving telephone monologue by a woman abandoned by her lover is performed by the Belgian soprano Anne-Catherine Gillet and accompanied on the organ (starting from Poulenc's piano version) by Yoann Tardivel, in a sober staging, conceived for this concert. The prelude to Pelléas et Mélisande by Fauré and the Three Dances for organ by Jehan Alain, subtitled Joys, Mournings, Struggles , provide an ideal introduction.

The evening closes with Tchaikovsky’s lush and expressive Serenade for Strings, a beloved masterpiece overflowing with warmth and passion that inspired the likes of famed choreographer George Balanchine.

The twentieth-century French composer Francis Poulenc has been characterized as half monk, half “bad boy,” equally at home in the cathedral service and the cabaret show. These two worlds collide in his colorful setting of the Gloria, performed with the Huntsville Community Chorus and Huntsville-based soprano Kristine Biller. Tonight’s program belongs to Paris altogether, really – including the beloved tone-poem The Sorcerer’s Apprentice by Paul Dukas, made famous in Walt Disney’s Fantasia.

Avi Avital describes Antonio Vivaldi's mandolin concertos as "the Old Testament of my instrument ." The mandolinist recorded some of them, including the D major concerto RV 93, around ten years ago – and received excellent reviews for their work. This baroque masterpiece is then followed by a leap in time of almost 300 years: with a piece that Fazıl Say recently composed for Avi Avital. The commissioned work was created in close collaboration, with the Turkish pianist and composer having long been on the mandolinist's wish list because "his musical language includes the integration of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean music." "In this respect, we are both very similar as artists," says the Artist in Residence for the 2025/2026 season. The result is a work that is tailor-made for the artistic personality of the Israeli musician. "When I look at the music, I recognize a lot of myself in it," he says of the new mandolin concerto, with which he has once again expanded the repertoire for his instrument. With conductor Ariel Zuckermann, Avital's friend is not only conducting the Duisburg Philharmonic, but also his preferred candidate for the 2nd Philharmonic Concert. "I've known him for many years and have played with him often," says Avital. "He has exactly the right temperament for this kind of music."

To kick off the season, the hr Symphony Orchestra, in collaboration with the European Central Bank, invites you to the Europa Open Air concert series. In the unique atmosphere on the banks of the Main River in Frankfurt, you can expect another captivating summer concert evening with chief conductor Alain Altinoglu. Up to 20,000 visitors regularly enjoy the hr Symphony Orchestra's summer concerts on the banks of the Main. As always, supported by the Elisabethen Quelle Foundation, this year's program features popular orchestral works by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Aram Khachaturian, and Gustav Holst, which have also enjoyed worldwide success in film. In addition, a rousing concerto for two pianos by Francis Poulenc and the renowned "Hungarian Rhapsody No. 2" by Franz Liszt will be performed. Earlier in the evening, the hr Big Band, featuring Wolfgang Haffner and special guest Shantel, will provide the first musical highlights and create a lively atmosphere on the banks of the Main. In keeping with tradition, gastronomic offerings round off the Europa Open Air concert of the hr-Sinfonieorchester and the European Central Bank, to which all music lovers are once again very warmly welcomed.

The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra makes a summer guest appearance at Stockholm City Hall this Sunday afternoon in August, marking the centenary of the City Hall organ in the Blue Hall – the largest pipe organ in Scandinavia. The instrument was inaugurated in 1925, two years after the building itself was completed.

But their predominantly Spanish program also combines—figuratively speaking—idyllic island life with the vibrant metropolis: The two talents, who have joined forces for a CD recording in 2023, bring with them works such as Joaquín Turina's atmospheric "Sonata española," Enrique Granado's spirited violin sonata, and Pablo de Sarasate's famous and fiery "Zigeunerweisen." And not only Spanish, but also passionate French sounds by Francis Poulenc and Maurice Ravel will be heard at their exclusive concert debut at Schloss Johannisberg.

Delicate and powerful, pure and unaffected: In 1982, at the age of eleven, Midori captivated the New York Philharmonic and Zubin Mehta. Over 40 years later, the concert violinist has mastered this strength down to the smallest detail: she regularly delights audiences around the world with her playing and program selection, which are characterized by elegant precision, profound expressiveness, and great intellect. The idyllic setting of the lakeside palace Monrepos offers a rare opportunity to experience the celebrated artist up close and in a small group at work. In collaboration with Özgür Aydin, the works for violin and piano by Beethoven, Ravel, Schubert, and Poulenc guide the listener through the transitions from Classical to Romantic and melodic Modern – inviting them to leave behind all sense of time.

Virtuosic in the middle register, tenderly melancholic in the upper register, and finally a rich, sonorous depth that immerses you in the music: the exciting facets of the cello are particularly palpable in the concert by Krzysztof Michalski and Yanjun Chen. Not only because two outstanding, dedicated performers perform together, but above all thanks to their program. Schubert wrote his A minor sonata for the arpeggione, a middle-range hybrid instrument that only briefly enjoyed popularity, somewhere between guitar, viola, and cello. Translating it to viola or cello was a natural choice and quickly became established after Schubert's publication. Michalski addresses this virtuoso piece with nimble finesse at the beginning of the intimate palace concert. The following Brahms sonata rocks in melancholy E minor, whereas Poulenc's sonata flirts with light-footed elegance. At the end, Michalski and Chen go all out and sweep everyone away with Rachmaninoff's powerful and beautiful tonal language.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

Settle in as the world’s most electrifying artists and ensembles converge at Davies Symphony Hall. Sheku and Isata Kanneh-Mason hail from a family of seven musical siblings, known not only for their talent but their marked collaborative spirit and affection for one another. The pair returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a recital featuring cello sonatas of Gabriel Fauré, Francis Poulenc, and Felix Mendelssohn, together with a new work by British composer Natalie Klouda.

After two musical bicycle tours, the journey isn't over yet: The French chamber orchestra Les Forces Majeures hops from their bikes onto the stage and rounds off their visit to our region with a concert in Bietigheim. The musicians also continue the themes of travel and mobility dramaturgically, selecting suitable works by mostly French composers: With Poulenc, we travel by train and on foot; with Haydn, Debussy, and Ravel, we continue on a boat; Schumann whisks us away into the forest; and Josef Strauss dances a bicycle polka with us. Whether on foot, at sea, or on wheels: Les Forces Majeures are bustling and inspire a spirit of mobilization and departure—literally and figuratively.
