The exceptionally large brass ensemble (25 players!) in Leoš Janáček's Sinfonietta is just one of the special features of this concert. Perhaps this is why the five movements sound like film music and have been "sampled" in several television series and films—although not intended as such by the composer. The four-movement Les Eaux célestes (2023) by the French composer Camille Pépin also leaves a special aural impression with its open, enchanting form and colorful instrumentation. Under the direction of Ben Glassberg, the Graz Philharmonic will accompany pianist Ilya Shmukler, who was awarded first prize at the 2024 Concours Géza Anda, in Frédéric Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1.

The biggest night in classical music is back! After eight weeks and over 80 concerts, the 2025 BBC Proms celebrates with a Last Night spectacular, packed with musical surprises and star turns. Elim Chan conducts the BBC Symphony Orchestra and Chorus in all the traditional favourites – anthems, folk songs and singalongs – with solo performances by ‘captivating’ soprano Louise Alder and ‘sensational’ trumpeter Alison Balsom. A sunrise in the mountains, a strenuous climb, then the coolness of the forest and the sound of the waterfall. Lush mountain meadows and the ringing of cowbells, finally an approaching thunderstorm, lightning and thunder and a narrow survival at the dangerous height. What, if not a symphony orchestra, could depict this intoxication of colors and sounds? And who, if not Richard Strauss, could paint this sound painting? The Alpine Symphony features over 100 musicians, including wind machines, thunder sheets and cowbells. But Strauss depicts his mountain world with great sensitivity, creating new timbres in very different ensembles. And the hike to the mountain peak is not just to be understood literally - the symphonic poem is also related to the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche and can be understood as a depiction of an entire life.

Poulenc’s Gloria, with its unexpected blend of secular and sacred sounds, fascinated (and scandalized) audiences from its first performances. “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues,” the composer remarked. Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic “Of a Spring Morning” introduces the program with a bright festivity. Jean-Marie Zeitouni, a conductor of “ebullience and infectious enjoyment” (Boulder Weekly), leads this vivacious performance, which invites the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and soprano Joélle Harvey to the stage for an evening of exultation that will keep music-lovers enraptured to its final whispered “Amen.”

French violin virtuoso Eva Zavaro joins the Jackson Symphony Orchestra to perform Swiss composer Pierre Wissmer’s Second Violin Concerto – a piece she poignantly played in Ukraine at the beginning of the war. Works by Rimsky-Korsakov, Camille Pepin, and Ravel will also be featured and the program will end with Borodin’s richly textured Symphony No. 2.

French composer Camille Pépin has found her very own musical language. Impressionistic, exotic, and minimalist elements combine to create an enchanted, mystical soundscape of shimmering timbres. "Les Eaux célestes" is inspired by an ancient Chinese legend, the celestial love story between Orihime, who weaves the clouds, and Hikoboshi, who tends the celestial cows—both have their own melody. The legend tells of the formation of the Milky Way and how the two celestial entities bridged it to find each other.
