Hosted by composer Abbie Betinis, our popular Courtroom Concerts take place at noon most Thursdays in the Landmark Center in downtown Saint Paul. This series features accomplished musicians and composers from the Twin Cities and surrounding area, as well as occasional musical newcomers to the area.

We invite you to join us for an eclectic and diverse program presented by the CYS Associate Orchestra, under the direction of Maestro Eylar, and the Wind Symphony, under the direction of Maestro Pete Nowlen. Wind Symphony Director Nowlen will feature works by Percy Fletcher, Sruthi Rajasekar, and Joe Hisaishi. Maestro Nowlen will lead off with the Vanity Fair Overture by English composer and organist Percy Fletcher (1879-1932). The composer described the work as “a comedy in which several characters from Thackeray’s novel Vanity Fair are portrayed.”

'Improvisation in a solo context calls for confidence, conviction, and atmospheric awareness from the performer. Improvisation in a group context calls for one more ingredient: the performers’ responsiveness and attentiveness to each other. The instinct to lead is transformed by the need to listen.

Our “minis” are always masterful, and this year is no different as we spotlight the keyboards, including harpsichord and organ. Centered around a dramatic J.S. Bach concerto as well as two magical pieces from a Indian-American composer showcasing the St. John’s Chapel organ, the afternoon features three soloists – Angie Zhang (harpsichord and organ), Dennis Carter II (flute) and Yuri Popowycz (violin).
