Venturing into the depths of the cosmos, our journey begins with Iris ter Schiphorst’s Gravitational Waves, a piece inspired by the 2015 detection of colliding black holes. Camille Pépin’s Laniakea follows, its shimmering orchestral textures and luminous motifs evoking the path of innumerable planetary systems on the vast currents of the universe. The programme comes full circle with Gustav Holst’s The Planets, each movement an iconic portrait of our solar system. Combining majestic brass, intricate woodwinds, and rhythmic drive, Holst’s classic orchestral suite conjures cosmic wonder and human drama with aplomb. It remains a cornerstone of the national repertoire.

In this 60-minute Symphonic Happy Hour, experience the extraordinary talent of Jason Xu, winner of the 2024 OSM Competition, as he brings out the full technical richness of the saxophone in Frank Martin’s Ballade. Camille Pépin will captivate you with the vibrant energy of Vajrayana, while Mussorgsky will take you on a journey through his imagined museum with Pictures at an Exhibition, a stunning work enriched by beautiful orchestral colours.

Saint-Saëns’ The Egyptian

Join the great musical centrifuge with this gut-wrenching concert. Never has it been more relevant to mock the urge of Russian intellectuals to express themselves despite changing oppressive regimes – an unfortunately recurring relevant theme. Shostakovich had to wait until after Stalin's death to have his daring and emotionally charged 1st Violin Concerto premiered - with a solo part so demanding that David Oistrach himself had to ask the composer for just an 8-measure break at the start of the 3rd movement because in it at least to be able to wipe the sweat from the forehead! It is a wild concert on all parameters – not least the 6-minute long solo cadenza is unique in the repertoire.
