For much of his life, Johannes Brahms felt the omnipresent weight of Beethoven’s shadow looming over him but by the time he reached this, his third and perhaps most stirring symphony, he had emphatically found his own unique voice and flourished into an icon in his own right. Under the direction of HSO Assistant Conductor, Adam Kerry Boyles, we welcome pianist and UCONN professor, Angelina Gadeliya, performing fellow UCONN Professor and Grammy® Award winner, Kenneth Fuchs’s Piano Concerto, “Spiritualist”-a piece inspired by three paintings of Helen Frankenthaler. His first numbered symphony, Prokofiev chose to compose his Classical Symphony without the aid of the piano and each movement is brief and to the point in the true “Classical” style. Mozart’s Overture to The Marriage of Figaro includes some of the most famous and hummable tunes in classical music and created a revival in the city of Prague for the composer.  It was there, in Prague, that his dramatic Symphony No. 38 was premiered, and it was considered a gift to the city.

Fearing for his life and bowing to pressure from the brutal Stalinist state, Shostakovich wrote his Fifth Symphony to appease the authorities. It was hugely successful – the government was pleased that the rebel had knuckled under, beguiled by its grandeur, beauty and final rousing march, but to many the triumph rang hollow and the Russian in the street saw the truth behind the façade. Brimming with lyricism and unbridled energy, Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto is his most engaging. With its vigorous, percussive themes, moments of sweeping grandeur, angularity and brilliance, it was a break from the Romantic concertos of the past. Composed for a pantomime, Bartók’s The Miraculous Mandarin is a parable about lust, power relations and the fear of the strange. In turns brutal, frenetic, intense and dream-like, the music is some of his most experimental.

The concert will conclude with a selection of the most memorable James Bond scores, ensuring an evening of excitement and nostalgia.

Under the baton of Artistic Director Jeremy Cuebas, attendees are also invited to a free 20-minute pre-concert lecture 30 minutes before the performance, offering deeper insights into the evening's music.

An Evgeny Kissin recital is unfailingly an event, showcasing the Russian pianist’s “formidable blend of technical prowess and exploratory fervor” (San Francisco Chronicle). This season in Orchestra Hall, Kissin surveys the lyrical charm and invention of Beethoven’s Op. 90 Sonata, Brahms’ deeply melodic Four Ballades, Rachmaninov’s ruminative, jewel-like Moments musicaux and Prokofiev’s incisive and hard-driving Sonata No. 7.

Riveting. Virtuosic. Diabolical. Daredevil. Terrifying. Words that describe both Prokofiev’s Second Piano Concerto and Walton’s first symphony. This family-friendly adventure follows young Peter as he ventures into a magical forest on a daring quest to capture a cunning wolf, offering a perfect introduction to classical music for young audiences.

Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf makes a welcome return. Originally written for a young audience, the piece has long delighted audiences of all ages. The TSO was highly impressed by Xavier Muzik’s work through the 2022 Earshot collaboration with the American Composers Orchestra, and immediately commissioned this new work having its world premiere. Mussorgsky’s stormy Night on Bald Mountain, inspired by the Russian legend of revels taking place on St. John’s Eve is followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, often thought of as his most classical. Though small in scale and length, it is full of the composer’s characteristic irony and wit.
