The Academy Wind Ensemble presents a programme of music ranging from the 17th to 21st century. The music Henry Purcell wrote for the funeral of Mary II in 1695 is some of his most moving. Judith Bingham’s Bright Spirit, from 2001, is similarly inspired, written in memorial to pioneering doctor William Reynish. A 2012 work from the Academy’s own Head of Composition, Philip Cashian, leads into Tippett’s Triumph. This work for concert band takes as its inspiration the composer’s humanist oratorio from the early 1980s, The Mask of Time.

Treat yourself to a fabulous and intimate baroque performance by Le Consort, the Paris-based preeminent ensemble. Le Consort is co-directed by violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte who is recognized globally as one of the foremost baroque violinists, the virtuosic harpsichordist Justin Taylor, and Baroque violinist Sophie de Bardonnèche; and joined by cellist Hanna Salzenstein. The first half of the concert is a tribute to the pioneering women of electronic music, Delia Derbyshire and Wendy Carlos, with performances of synth-heavy, sci-fi movie soundtracks. Highlights include Wendy Carlos's Moog-overdubbed Bach arrangements and the score for Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. The program also features pieces like Bernard Herrmann's Fahrenheit 451 Suite, Charles Ives's The Unanswered Question, and themes from iconic films and TV shows such as John Carpenter's Escape from New York, Vangelis's Chariots of Fire, and the Doctor Who theme by Ron Grainer and Delia Derbyshire.

Adding a unique twist, the concert includes the London premiere of Will Gregory’s suite for synths and orchestra, Heat Ray: The Archimedes Project. This performance is enhanced by the presence of Matt Parker, a renowned stand-up mathematician, who blends comedy with mathematical insights, creating an engaging and educational experience. This event promises a captivating journey through the retro-futurist world of electronic music, celebrating its rich history and innovative future.

Copenhagen Soloists perform Purcell's baroque gem, the opera Dido and Aeneas, as a concert performance. The work is one of the most popular operas from the Baroque era and with its relatively short duration (1 hour), intense story and lovely music, it often helps to provide a shortcut to classical music for a wider audience. Although it is a concert performance, the dramatic experience lies so strongly in the music itself that it carries the theatrical experience through the sound. The original English language is something that also makes history naturally accessible to many. A team of eight singing soloists who share chorus and solo, incl. all roles. The orchestra consists of 10 instrumentalists. It will thus be an exciting chamber music experience.

KONTRAPUNKTUS returns this January with five winter performances of its new, glorious production, “THE LONDONERS: An English Baroque Salute,” which spotlights the brilliant musical artistry of British, Scottish, and Irish composers during the Baroque era, including George Frideric Handel, William Boyce, Charles Avison, Carl Friedrich Abel, and Henry Purcell.

I would have written a shorter letter.” Henry Purcell’s mini-masterpiece Dido and Aeneas distills all the drama and power usually found in a standard-length opera into a taut, fast moving and ultimately devastatingly powerful 60 minutes, along the way taking in a love story, pirates, sorcery and drunken sailors, all painted in vivid musical detail.

Quebec’s Les Violons du Roy—named after the court orchestra of the French kings—has long been a favorite chamber ensemble at Carnegie Hall. They now return in their first performance at the Hall with Music Director and Conductor Jonathan Cohen, who brings an extraordinary new energy to the group. Adding further to the excitement is Miloš, named the “hottest guitarist in the world” by The Sunday Times. Enjoy expertly informed performances of selections from Vivaldi’s quintessential L’estro armonico, as well as works by Couperin, Purcell Dumanoir, Rameau, and others.

This project features the iconic ballerina Evelyn Hart and prize-winning dancer/choreographer Bill Coleman with additional choreography by David Earle. Musicians from Tafelmusik and Theatre of Early Music join soprano Sinead White in the title role of Dido, baritone Alexander Dobson as Aeneas, and Ryan McDonald as the Sorceress. The orchestra is led by Adrian Butterfield with Daniel Taylor conducting.

Artistic Director Daria Adams curates a one-hour program of four pieces by living composers, whose works look back in some way, then weaves them together with their historical counterparts. This leads to some fascinating juxtapositions, such as a song by Hildegard von Bingen from 1100 A.D with a work for strings and harpsichord by Michi Wiancko from 2021. Daria has paired Elizabethan ­era songs by John Dowland, Italian madrigals by Gesualdo, and a Bourree by J.S. Bach with modern counterparts by Wiancko and Caroline Shaw.

Immerse yourself in the opulent sounds of the Baroque era with the "Voices of Versailles" concert, a highlight of the 2023/24 season presented by the Sebastians. This enchanting evening is scheduled for Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 5pm, taking place at the historic Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, located at 152 West 66th St., nestled between Broadway and Amsterdam.

"Voices of Versailles" promises a rich auditory feast, featuring the combined talents of the eight singers from the Yale Voxtet and the Sebastians’ core quartet, which includes two violins, a cello, and a harpsichord. The ensemble will be further enhanced with the addition of recorders, oboes, viola, violone, and theorbo, creating a full-bodied sound that is sure to transport the audience back to the grandeur of the French Baroque period.

The concert's program is centered around Marc-Antoine Charpentier’s "La Couronne de fleurs," and will also include works by Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Jean-Baptiste Lully, Henry Purcell, and Jean-Féry Rebel, among others. The performance is expected to last between 80 and 90 minutes and will proceed without an intermission, ensuring an uninterrupted experience of sublime music.

Performers for the evening include notable musicians such as Margaret Owens and Geoffrey Burgess on oboe and recorder, Daniel Lee and Nicholas DiEugenio on violin, Annie Garlid on viola, Ezra Seltzer on cello, Nathaniel Chase on violone, Charles Weaver on theorbo, and Jeffrey Grossman on harpsichord, alongside the talented vocalists of the Yale Voxtet.

In keeping with the Sebastians' commitment to accessibility and community engagement, students of any age can attend the concert for free, subject to ticket availability and proof of student status. Additionally, community comp tickets are available for those who wish to attend but may find the cost prohibitive.

Praised for “ravishing, exhilarating, and uniquely beautiful” (BBC Music Magazine) performances, the French ensemble Le Consort likens itself to an early-music version of a string quartet—a close-knit group of four young musicians celebrated for bringing fresh vitality to Baroque chamber repertoire. Co-directed by harpsichordist Justin Taylor and rising star violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte, Le Consort claimed both first prize and the audience prize at the 2017 Loire Valley International Early Music Competition, chaired by William Christie. Langlois de Swarte has entered the limelight as an exciting new voice on Baroque violin, captivating audiences with his seemingly effortless blend of control and abandon. The program is a whirlwind tour through Italy, England, Germany, and France, featuring two magnificent settings of La Follia—arguably the period’s most recognizable and enduring melody.

Their performances are characterized by a rare musical spontaneity, giving audiences the sense of hearing even treasured canon repertoire as if for the first time.

Describing themselves as “your friendly neighborhood string quartets with above average amounts of beard,” the Grammy Award-nominated Danish String Quartet combines a down-to-earth sensibility with an astounding unity of sound that has placed them firmly within the ranks of the world’s finest string quartets. The three Danes and one Norwegian return for their third appearance on our series with a program that showcases their uncanny ability to combine finesse and spontaneity – blurring the line between classical repertoire and folk tunes by bringing a sense of urgency and purity to every note they play. By pairing arrangements of Scandinavian folk music with the court dance that inspired Purcell’s kaleidoscopic variations, the gypsy-inflected spirit of one of Haydn’s first quartet masterpieces, and the musical tribute Shostakovich created in memory of his first wife, the ensemble will remind us of the humanity at the core of all music-making.

**Danse Macabre Concert: A Spine-Chilling Musical Experience**

Join the Cape Ann Symphony for a hauntingly memorable evening at the "Danse Macabre Concert," part of the Musicians Unleashed series. This special event took place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 3:00 pm, hosted within the historic walls of the Gloucester UU Church. 

**A Halloween Spectacle Not to Be Missed**

This Halloween, the Cape Ann Symphony invited audiences to indulge in the eerie and the spectral, offering a unique concert experience that promised to be as thrilling as it was musically enriching. The performance featured the principal talents of the string section, affectionately dubbed the principal fiends for the night, delivering a program filled with ghostly music that captivated and spooked in equal measure.

Our guides—young virtuoso baroque violinist Théotime Langlois de Swarte and harpsichordist Justin Taylor, colleagues in famed ensemble Le Consort—will treat us to forgotten gems they have unearthed from old libraries, transcriptions of the most popular opera arias from the period, and masterpieces that continue to resonate to this day. In the spirit of musical performances of the time, you will sit onstage alongside the duo as they spin the magic that has garnered international critical acclaim—including the prestigious Diapason d’Or in 2019.

Described as “the latest phenomenon of the Russian piano school” (Corriere della Sera), Alexander Malofeev came to international prominence when, in 2014, he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians at age 13. Reviewing the performance, Amadeus noted, “Contrary to what could be expected of a youngster … he demonstrated not only high technical accuracy but also an incredible maturity. Crystal clear sounds and perfect balance revealed his exceptional ability.” Since this triumph, Malofeev has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent pianists of his generation.

**Fallen Angels: A Baroque Exploration of the Paranormal**

Join Ars Lyrica Houston for an enchanting evening of Baroque music that delves into the mystical and paranormal, titled "Fallen Angels." This captivating concert took place on Friday, September 22, 2023, at 7:30 PM in the exquisite Zilkha Hall at The Hobby Center for the Performing Arts.

"Fallen Angels" showcased an otherworldly program that spanned the harrowing "Judgement of Solomon" by Giacomo Carissimi to the spirited masques from Henry Purcell’s "Fairy Queen." The performance featured a stellar lineup of five extraordinary singers accompanied by a colorful Baroque orchestra, complete with period strings and winds, setting the stage for a season devoted to the magical aspects of music.

The concert highlighted the talents of Nola Richardson and Eliza Masewicz, sopranos; Jay Carter, countertenor; Thomas O’Neill, tenor; and Enrico Lagasca, bass-baritone, marking an Ars Lyrica debut for some. The program included a rich selection of works, such as Carissimi's "Judicium Salomonis," Alessandro Scarlatti's "Cello Sonata in C minor," and excerpts from Purcell's "The Fairy Queen," among others. The performance ran for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes, including an intermission, with all texts projected in English surtitles for the audience's understanding.

Audience members were treated to a night of sublime artistry, with the celestial voices of the singers and the elegant performance of the orchestra creating an entrancing experience. The concert was not only a showcase of musical excellence but also an exploration of themes like love, mystery, and the supernatural, as reflected in the Baroque era's rich tapestry of sounds and stories.
