Almost 100 years ago, Fritz Lang's Metropolis confronted moviegoers with a dystopian glimpse into an imaginary future: In a futuristic city, people live in two strictly segregated classes: the workers and the rich. They are held in check by a totalitarian power structure, robots are replacing humans, and machines threaten their very existence – themes that have not lost their significance. The new score for the film was written by American composer Jeff Beal, author of numerous soundtracks, including those for House of Cards and Monk, whose rich musical experience as a jazz musician, classical musician, and composer was incorporated into the film.

Five-time Emmy winning composer Jeff Beal makes his debut in Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage leading the Silver Nitrate Big Band and Fourth Wall Ensemble in the live-to-picture U.S. premiere of his score for the Weimar Cinema masterpiece The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. Considered one of the most influential silent films in history, Caligari’s expressionist design, complex themes, and genre elements combined with Beal’s searing score showcases the singular voice of the musical storyteller. This film is from the holdings of the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung in Wiesbaden.
