Copenhagen Soloists perform Purcell's baroque gem, the opera Dido and Aeneas, as a concert performance. The work is one of the most popular operas from the Baroque era and with its relatively short duration (1 hour), intense story and lovely music, it often helps to provide a shortcut to classical music for a wider audience. Although it is a concert performance, the dramatic experience lies so strongly in the music itself that it carries the theatrical experience through the sound. The original English language is something that also makes history naturally accessible to many. A team of eight singing soloists who share chorus and solo, incl. all roles. The orchestra consists of 10 instrumentalists. It will thus be an exciting chamber music experience.

Les Violons du Roy has been a focal point of Québec City’s musical life since it was founded by Bernard Labadie in 1984. The ensemble takes its name from the celebrated court orchestra of the French kings. Under music director Jonathan Cohen, this orchestra soars to truly regal heights. Join us for an enchanting evening of vocal music as Otto Vogel, a talented baritone from the Northwestern Bienen School of Music, presents his Bachelor of Music recital. This special performance will take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 6:00pm CDT in the intimate setting of the McClintock Choral and Recital Room, located within the Patrick G. and Shirley W. Ryan Center for the Musical Arts.

Otto Vogel, under the tutelage of Karen Brunssen, will showcase his vocal prowess through a carefully selected repertoire that includes works by Henry Purcell realized by Benjamin Britten, selections from Felix Mendelssohn's "Elijah," Op. 70, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' pieces from "Three Poems by Walt Whitman" among others. The recital will also feature Gerald Finzi's "Channel Firing" from "Before and After Summer," Op. 16, and a delightful array of songs from Madeleine Dring's "7 Shakespeare Songs" and Betty Roe's whimsical "Lullaby for a Baby Toad" and "Morning and Afternoon."

Accompanying Otto on this musical journey will be Teresa Kang on piano and Eric Powers on cello, adding depth and harmony to the evening's performance.
