The mood changes with Rachmaninov’s study, “Sea and the Seagulls”, picturing a desolate grey sea, and reflecting the composer’s exile after the Russian Revolution. Sergei Prokofiev meets a French violinist and writes a concerto with a Spanish sizzle: music that sings, dances and tingles in the ear. And, exiled from Russia, Sergei Rachmaninov discovers a glittering world of fast cars and big bands – and pours it all into a symphony that still, somehow, yearns and aches for a homeland he would never see again. All music tells a story and tonight, guest conductor Robert Trevino recreates a world of revolution, exile and burning emotions: three very different but equally colourful 20th-century Russian masterpieces, striking sparks off each other. RPO Artist-in-Residence Johan Dalene takes the spotlight in Prokofiev’s vibrant Violin Concerto No.2, the perfect showcase for Gramophone’s 2022 Young Artist of the Year.

The Clarion Choir presents the finale of its multi-year project to perform the complete choral works of Sergei Rachmaninoff in celebration of the composer’s 150th birthday. This endeavor brings to light a lesser-known but central part of Rachmaninoff’s body of work. Clarion is joined by Amor Artis Chamber Choir and NOVUS NY, the orchestra in residence at Trinity Church NYC, to mark the culmination of this project with a performance of Rachmaninoff’s rarely-heard cantata Spring, and Three Folk Songs for chorus and orchestra. The concert will also feature the composer’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor featuring soloist Ilya Maximov.

Mr. Goodyear began his training at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, received his bachelor's degree from Curtis Institute of Music, and completed his master's at The Juilliard School. Known as an improviser and composer, he has been commissioned by orchestras and chamber music organizations, and performs his own solo works. For Serge Rachmaninoff, the sound of bells embodied the eternal soul of Russia, and he poured all his imagination into this sumptuous choral symphony, an odyssey through the whole of human life told in music of sparkling joy and rich, deep sorrow. It’s a glorious showcase for Edward Gardner and our world-class London Philharmonic Choir, and a wonderful way to follow the epic sweep of Rachmaninoff’s grandest piano concerto, with LPO favourite Leif Ove Andsnes (‘magisterial elegance, power, and insight’ – The New York Times) in the spotlight.

Symphonic Dances is not so much a collection of dances as it is a series of dramatic tone poems, filled with moodily memorable melodies, eerie waltzes, and a triumphant, virtuosic finale. An audience favorite, violinist Augustin Hadelich reveals “something from a plane beyond ours,” performing Mendelssohn’s wonderfully lyric, virtuosic violin concerto.

Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist himself, held nothing back when composing for his instrument; Simon Trpčeski is ideally suited for the challenge of Rachmaninoff’s demanding yet romantic First Piano Concerto. In mythology, Orpheus crossed paths with the god of bees — composer Dobrinka Tabakova wove their buzzing sounds into her dramatic Orpheus’ Comet, which also includes references to Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo. Finally, Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a beguiling suite about a clever woman who weaves adventure-filled stories to save her own life over the course of 1,001 nights.

The Jacksonville Symphony tackles Rachmaninoff's iconic Second Piano Concerto in what is certain to be a thrilling performance by returning pianist Joyce Yang. Known for its virtuosic piano passages, the concerto unfolds with famous tunes that have been used in pop, film and the spectrum of genres between. For the first of several world premieres this season, Brittany J. Green’s fresh and unchartered melodies come alive, complemented by Strauss' A Hero's Life that spotlights violin solos by Concertmaster Adelya Nartadjieva.

The First Piano Concerto was written when Rachmaninoff was just 18 years old and studying at the Moscow Conservatory. He revised the work 26 years later as a much more experienced, and ever self-critical, composer, but it nevertheless retains its original youthful freshness and bold ambition.

Maestro Joseph Young kicks off the 40th Anniversary Season as he takes the stage for his first appearance as guest conductor with National Philharmonic. Young balances a flourishing career with roles as Music Director of the Berkeley Symphony and Artistic Director of Ensembles at the Peabody Conservatory. SPCO Artistic Partner and violist extraordinaire Tabea Zimmermann returns to open the SPCO’s 66th season with the dramatic overture to Mozart’s opera Don Giovanni and Mozart’s beloved Sinfonia Concertante alongside SPCO Concertmaster, Steven Copes. The program also features Prokofiev’s Classical Symphony, a celebratory launch to the season, akin to the uncorking of a bottle of champagne.

The San Francisco International Piano Festival proudly presents the debut recital of the acclaimed pianist and composer, Asiya Korepanova. Known for her virtuosic skill and emotional depth, Ms. Korepanova will perform a program that showcases her original transcriptions, beginning with a tribute to the festival's featured composer, Gabriel Fauré.

Asiya Korepanova is celebrated for her comprehensive repertoire, which includes over 60 piano concertos and solo works spanning from the Baroque period to contemporary compositions. She is the only pianist to have performed the complete solo piano works of Rachmaninoff within the composer’s 150th-anniversary year in 2023. Her performances are noted for their emotional intensity and technical brilliance, earning her repeated engagements and widespread admiration.

In addition to her prowess as a pianist, Ms. Korepanova is also a recognized composer, visual artist, and poet. Her transcriptions of major works, such as Richard Strauss’ "Ein Heldenleben" and Mussorgsky's "Songs and Dances of Death," have solidified her reputation as a formidable transcriber. Her recent compositions include the world premiere recording of her concerto for alto saxophone and piano, "Poéme," and the premiere of her Piano Quintet "I marvel at the sky."
