The first half of the concert will be of Russian Romanticism music. Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 3 in D Minor by Sergei Rachmaninov is one of his most technically demanding piano concertos. The young British artist Isata Kanneh-Mason will be presented to the audience in Prague. The second part of the evening will be of Russian music of the 20th century. The chief conductor of the Czech Radio Symphony Orchestra, Petr Popelka, will present the neo-classical oratorio-opera Oedipus Rex by Igor Stravinsky. The libretto was written by the French poet and playwright Jean Cocteau, based on Sophocles' tragedy of the same name. The title roles will be played by: Ester Paulů (mezzo-soprano), Jiří Brückler (baritone), Pavel Švingr (bass) and Daniel Matoušek (tenor), with Igor Bareš as the narrator. The artists will be accompanied by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra and the male part of the Prague Philharmonic Choir.

After a fiery overture by Polish composer Grażyna Bacewicz, this concert centers on two of classical music’s greatest voices. While at its core an elegant and charming Classical-era composition, Beethoven’s second piano concerto includes delightful and innovative surprises that harken to his later Romantic roots. Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, on the other hand, is Romantic through and through. Coordinator of keyboard skills and non-major piano at the Bienen School, Karen Kan-Walsh has given performances in Russia and China, as well as throughout the Chicago and Ann Arbor areas. An active member of the Illinois State Music Teachers Association, she also served as a reviewer for Clavier magazine. Guest collaborative pianist Julian Kwok (‘03 DMus) maintains a private voice studio in New York and holds certificates in vocal and clarinet performance as well as diplomas in piano performance from the Royal Schools of Music, London. Their program showcases music for two pianos as well as Bach’s Concerto for Two Pianos in C Minor, featuring an ensemble conducted by Yelisey (Eli) Zelman.

Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto is a virtuoso tour de force. Its scale, technical demands and emotional richness are perhaps the ultimate challenge for a pianist to master, but the challenge is worth the prize as the rippling melodies for the soloist are full of melancholy and heart-rending drama. And if Rachmaninoff’s focus is the soloist, then Bartók’s is the orchestra. His concerto ensures that every instrument gets its chance to shine in a piece that embraces vivid colours, gorgeous tunes and ends with a life-affirming, rabble-rousing burst of sheer joy.

Popular Dutch duo-pianists Lucas and Arthur Jussen return to Symphony Hall for a BSO-commissioned world premiere. This music was written especially for them by American composer Andrew Norman, winner of the prestigious Grawemeyer Award for his orchestral work Play. Maurice Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite brings the composer’s mastery of orchestral color to his fairy-tale suite, originally written for piano, four-hands. Closing the program is Sergei Rachmaninoff’s tour-de-force for orchestra, by turns powerfully energetic and meltingly lyrical: his Symphonic Dances, the composer’s final work.

The conclusion of the Rachmaninov cycle coincides with the simultaneous debuts at the National of the Italian Daniele Rustioni and the Russian Alexandra Dovgan, 18 years old, new star of the piano: child's play for her than the (numerous) pitfalls of the Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini , where the brilliance must not mask the lugubrious reverse. Manfred , a false symphony of its author, takes Berlioz as its model, a disheveled theater which will not fail to displease a maestro of this caliber, accustomed to the greatest opera pits.

Iconic couples – tragic fates: Love is by no means a guarantee of a happy ending, as couples like Romeo and Juliet or Tony and Maria from West Side Story demonstrate. With their compositions, Sergei Prokofiev and Leonard Bernstein created two masterpieces of cult status. Marko Letonja brings these highly dramatic love stories to the stage – as pure, thrilling music. Often enough, however, there are dramas behind the scenes too: Sergei Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto, for example, was almost never written. Self-doubt and depression plagued the composer, and he was blocked. Only therapy brought him back to music, back to himself. The concert was a triumphant comeback, full of emotion and depth. As a thank you, Rachmaninov dedicated it to his doctor. It is a musical monument to the strength it takes to get back up again and again.

An exuberant celebration of music by three composers, all of whom came from elsewhere to live in California. The youngest, Massachusetts-born Adam Schoenberg, is famous for his ability to meld popular idioms into energetic pieces for classical audiences and Cool Cat is no exception. This delightful fanfare of an overture celebrates the life of P-22, the world-famous mountain lion who lived for a decade in the hills above Los Angeles. John Adams, one of the most renowned American composers, wrote his piano concerto Century Rolls in the 1990s as a celebration of the great age of American player-piano recordings a century ago by artists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Gershwin. Russian-born Rachmaninoff himself spent much of the last quarter century of his life in the US, becoming a citizen and owning homes in New York and Los Angeles. Rachmaninoff was a huge admirer of American popular music and in the last movement of his Third Symphony we can hear his delight in Hollywood film-music and especially the movies of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Following the success of the 2023 Final, the three most promising young conductors of the 2026 competition will each take to The Bridgewater Hall stage to direct the Hallé orchestra live, competing to become the newest member of the Hallé family.

At the age of 22, Rachmaninov had his heart broken. He poured all his ambition and all his emotion into the epic score of his First Symphony, which goes off like a volcano – wild, passionate and positively brimming with inspiration. For many years it was lost, but today conductor Nil Venditti gives this youthful tour-de-force its due. The Northampton-born composer Edmund Rubbra, meanwhile, was one of the most admired names in post-war British music, but today his radiant Piano Concerto – inspired by the flowers and moods of the English countryside – is a real rarity. Pianist Mark Bebbington has made it his mission to rediscover Britain’s lost masterworks, and this one’s a jewel. You might be about to discover your new favourite piece.

Through his thrilling concerts and highly acclaimed recordings, Gautier Capuçon has already established a solid reputation as one of the leading cellists of his generation. Born in the French city of Chambéry in 1981, Capuçon first took cello lessons at age five. He went on to study at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris under Philippe Muller and Annie Cochet-Zakine, later attending a masterclass of Heinrich Schiff in Vienna. A prize-winner at numerous international competitions, Capuçon was named »Young Artist of the Year« at the Victoires de la Musique ceremony in 2001. In 2004 he was awarded the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and has also received several ECHO Classical Music Awards. In addition to his work as a soloist, Gautier Capuçon is an enthusiastic chamber musician, performing with Martha Argerich, Daniel Barenboim and, naturally, his brother, Renaud.

Autier Capuçon has long since established himself as one of the leading cellists of his generation and regularly attracts attention with his recordings and concerts. Born in Chambéry in 1981, Capuçon began playing the cello at the age of five. He studied at the Conservatoire National Supérieur in Paris with Philippe Muller and Annie Cochet-Zakine and then in Heinrich Schiff's master class in Vienna. The winner of numerous first prizes in international competitions, including the International André Navarra Prize, Capuçon was named Young Artist of the Year at the Victoires de la Musique in 2001 and received a Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award in 2004. Since then, he has also received several ECHO Klassik awards, most recently for his recording of Fauré's complete chamber music.

Master and student can exchange strange secrets. "Don't be afraid to raise your head if you want attention," Tchaikovsky once said to the worried Taneyev. Did Taneyev, in turn, pass on this advice to the young Rachmaninov? Surely, if we are to believe the outbursts of the First Symphony of the young Sergei, whose career owes much to this rigorous teacher. We rediscover Taneyev through his cantata Saint John of Damascus , a fusion of Bach's style and the folkloric and religious roots of his country. Like a bridge between 19th- and 20th-century Russia.

Shostakovich's Second Piano Concerto is subtle, playful music, full of love – literally: the concerto was written for the composer's young son. Anny Clyne wrote Masquerade for the London Proms, which she describes as “…a place where people from all walks of life mingle to enjoy a wide array of music…”. It is a must-hear mix of neo classical irony and modernism.  Sergei Rachmaninoff’s third symphony, which the composer called ‘one of my best pieces’, is a masterclass in melody.

John Williams is best known for writing some of the most iconic and unforgettable themes and scores in film history, and his contributions to the concert hall repertory over the last 70 years have made him all the more beloved and distinguished. A young conductor on the rise, Anna Handler returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall to lead Williams’ dignified and lyrical Trumpet Concerto with LA Phil Principal Trumpet Thomas Hooten, who in 2019 crowd-funded and self-produced his own recording of the piece, which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes classical chart.

Overflowing with lush melodies and sumptuous orchestrations, Maestro Tausk leads the VSO in Rachmaninoff’s towering Second Symphony. French-Canadian cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras has “always been willing to range outside the comfort zone of most of his colleagues” (The New Yorker) and tackles one of the 20th century’s most important additions to the cello repertoire, Tout un monde lointain… (A Whole Distant World…) by French composer Henri Dutilleux. Experience Canadian Michael Oesterle’s La Chapelle, a musical tribute to Montreal’s historic Bon-Pasteur Chapel.

Commissioned for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II, Gloriana attracted controversy in exploring the hidden romantic life of the monarch’s namesake and predecessor. Britten’s music, though, brilliantly captures the spirit of Elizabethan dances and lute songs, whilst giving them an ironic 20th-century distance. The seven Courtly Dances that open this concert are an immediately appealing example.

And, with her ravishing sound and lightning-fast fingers, there’s no more stylish interpreter than the Moldovan violinist Alexandra Tirsu – especially when she’s accompanied by conductor Eun Sun Kim (‘A major star’ – The New York Times). Lili Boulanger’s vibrant and playful march, written around the same time as the Prokofiev, makes for an energetic opening; meanwhile, Sergei Rachmaninov’s Second Symphony is the orchestral equivalent of a blockbuster movie – a sweeping emotional drama, filled with winter storms, huge sunlit vistas and mile after mile of unforgettable melodies. Is this the ultimate romantic symphony? All we know is that it sounds wonderful, and we can’t wait to share it.

A musical journey of emotion and virtuosity as well as remarkable orchestral movements awaits you at this concert, which will offer works from Czech and foreign music. The Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, led by conductor Jiří Habart, will present three compositions.

Alexander Krichel has recorded seven solo albums – featuring works by his favorite composers, Modest Mussorgsky, George Enescu, Beethoven, Mozart, Ravel, Chopin, Schumann, and Liszt. All of these solo projects have been enthusiastically received by critics, whether for his "sharp articulation" (Frankfurter Allgemeine), his convincing "sensate mind and exquisite artist of tone color" (Rondo), or his interpretations that come across as "grand, almost visionary narratives" (Kulturspiegel). His playing, NDR Kultur summarizes, is "colorful, thoughtful, courageous, and dreamily assured."
