Young British rising-star pianist Amiri Harewood made his concerto debut as a teenager, and his sweeping programme features pieces from around the world. From America, George Walker’s fifth sonata from 2003 condenses the form into a dense five-minute burst. From Nigeria, Joshua Uzoigwe’s rhythmic piece is inspired by a traditional dance to a river deity. Finally, Granados’s seven waltzes capture the essence of Spanish dance in dazzling, rich colours.

Pure joy! This is the musical program Mozart set for himself in his so-called "Coronation Mass," written in March 1779. In reality, it resounded in Salzburg Cathedral for Easter that same year, and it was only after the composer's death that it became the essential accompaniment for the weddings of crowned heads. The graceful vocal quartet clearly alternates with jubilant, swift choirs, the two concertante oboes adding a festive touch to the ensemble.

For the first time, Iceland, with the Harpa in Reykjavik, is participating in the European Concert Hall Organization's annual "Rising Stars" program, which sends young artists on tour through the continent's major concert halls. And with Álfheiður Erla Guðmundsdóttir, a singer from the Nordic island nation was directly nominated. She loves the poetic, mystical traditions of her country and is currently performing brilliantly not only on the major opera stages in Basel and Berlin, but also realizing unusual projects as a photographer and video artist.

The Hamburg State Orchestra's Philharmonic Concerts become contemporary games, transcending the boundaries of the ordinary. This concert showcases the fruits of Mikhail Pletnev's inspiration – his new composition, based on Rachmaninoff's music, is juxtaposed with the original orchestral fantasy "The Rock." Rachmaninoff thus encounters us today as a mirror of the past and, through Pletnev, as a part of the here and now. This unabashedly engaging musical play opens new perspectives on our musical culture, our thinking and being, and our way of receiving music.

Under the direction of General Music Director Vladimir Jurowski, the Bavarian State Orchestra will perform three European works from the fin de siècle to the 1920s, which, in their contrasts, reflect the upheavals of the early 20th century. Sergei Rachmaninoff’s symphonic poem The Isle of the Dead , inspired by the haunting gloom of Arnold Böcklin’s painting of the same name, will be contrasted by Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, with which Italian pianist Beatrice Rana will make her Bavarian State Opera debut. The concerto, perfectly formed in classicism, embodies the radiant optimism of the 1920s with elements of blues and jazz. Richard Strauss’ Also Sprach Zarathustra stands between the melancholy of the afterlife and the affirmation of life: first performed in 1896 at the end of the 19th century, this tone poem, rich in contrast and unresolved in its conflicts, already points the way to what is to come. The modernity of the composition, which was expected with suspicion and received with astonishment in its time, is demonstrated not least by its use in Stanley Kubrick's monumental film 2001: A Space Odyssey , which in turn points far into the future.

"Some pianists are capable of setting their instrument ablaze from the very first note." This comment by a reviewer is, of course, not to be taken literally, but it nevertheless reveals much about Ilya Shmukler's pianistic temperament. "All or nothing" – with this motto, the Moscow native not only captured the jury of the renowned Concours Géza Anda 2024 by storm, but also the hearts of the audience. "Virtuoso," "brilliant," "a volcano," "an exceptional phenomenon"—these and similar descriptions can be read after his concerts. With a program ranging from Mozart to Chopin to Rachmaninoff, Ilya Shmukler will also be setting the sparks flying at ProArte.

There's something exhilarating about spending an entire evening in Rachmaninov's company. Not only for the melancholy of his final symphony, a page of exile and maturity concluded with the words "Finished! Praise be to God!" But also for the imagination that fantasizes about and reinvents the native Slavic land. "Joyful ringing, melancholic knells, every Russian carries within him this love of bells," notes its author, hoping, in this vocal symphony, which he considered one of his major achievements, to have "succeeded in making the bells vibrate with human emotions."

This artist is simply incredible! In recent years, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko has collected first prizes at international piano competitions like other people collect stamps. He won three in 2022, and two more in 2024 – and those are just the most important competitions. To say that the Canadian is a magnificent pianist seems almost an understatement: Up and down the country, the press and audiences praise his outstanding technique, the depth of his interpretations, and his charisma. We will be hearing more from Jaeden Izik-Dzurko, that's for sure. And soon, at ProArte: At the Elbphilharmonie, the pianist will present sophisticated and virtuosic works from Bach to Scriabin.

The Washington Post has hailed her as a true “piano lion”, and Gramophone Magazine describes her playing as unforgettable.

A winner of the Young Concert Artists International Auditions and a recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Chee-Yun has performed with many of the world's foremost orchestras and conductors. Orchestral highlights include her tours of the United States with the San Francisco Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas and Japan with the NHK Symphony, a concert with the Seoul Philharmonic conducted by Myung-Whun Chung that was broadcast on national television, and a benefit for UNESCO with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s at Avery Fisher Hall. A champion of contemporary music, Chee-Yun performed Christopher Theofanidis’ Violin Concerto conducted by David Alan Miller as part of the Albany Symphony's American Festival, in addition to performing Kevin Puts’ Violin Concerto with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra.

To celebrate Halloween, step into the surreal atmosphere of Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead, accompanied by van Woerkum’s film of the same name, where the realms of fantasy and fear intertwine. The wild virtuosity of Liszt’s Totentanz (Dance of the Dead), performed by Goodwin Friesen, winner of the 2022 OSM Competition, captures the chilling battle between life and death. Prepare for an evening of spine-tingling mystery and excitement, capped off with festivities at the Maison Symphonique.
