This was the case with Joana Mallwitz, who once hurled her baton into the audience. With a pencil, she then continued happily through the score. Whether with or without a baton, the debut of this sympathetic artist is eagerly awaited. At a young age, the score of Schubert's »Unfinished« was her »favourite book« and the initial spark for her career ambitions. She found her studies »heavenly«, became Europe’s youngest female General Music Director at the age of 27 and is now the new Chief Conductor of the Konzerthausorchester Berlin, succeeding Christoph Eschenbach. She loves to put together programmes based on dramaturgical considerations and gut feeling – and always explores them with her own personal signature. Her typical, cleverly and lovingly composed blend of recipes between the familiar and the new are like exciting expeditions. For Bamberg, her musical menu includes dance pieces: It starts with the lively momentum of the 1985 work »The Chair-man Dances« by John Adams. Pablo Ferrández is the soloist in Dvořák’s cello concerto, which has to do with the composer’s great childhood love – and Rachmaninov wrote a heartbreaking song of tears with his »Symphonic Dances«. We can truly look forward to Joana Mallwitz’s inquisitive gaze: she is known for her combination of glowing passion and technical precision – and for her willingness to take risks, because: »Music always saves you! Beethoven's final piano trio, named for his benefactor the Archduke Rudolph, is considered to be not only one of the capstones to Beethoven's 'heroic' middle period, but also one of the greatest compositions in the trio repertoire. Composed in a flurry of inspiration in March 1811, Beethoven was fond of performing this trio, and chose to play it in his final public concert. Musica Tra Amici co-directors Eric Halen and Brinton Averil Smith join with internationally renowned concert pianist and Steinway Artist Evelyn Chen to bring Beethoven's masterpiece to life. Opening the program will be Rachmaninoff's brief but emotionally transfixing Trio élégiaque No. 1, with which the 19 year old Rachmaninoff made his debut as a composer. The beautiful and melodic work owes shows the influence of his mentor Tchaikovsky, but has the unmistakeable stamp of Rachmaninoff's own genius. Following the concert the audience and performers will meet and discuss the music with complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres. The Clarion Choir presents the finale of its multi-year project to perform the complete choral works of Sergei Rachmaninoff in celebration of the composer’s 150th birthday. This endeavor brings to light a lesser-known but central part of Rachmaninoff’s body of work. Clarion is joined by Amor Artis Chamber Choir and NOVUS NY, the orchestra in residence at Trinity Church NYC, to mark the culmination of this project with a performance of Rachmaninoff’s rarely-heard cantata Spring, and Three Folk Songs for chorus and orchestra. The concert will also feature the composer’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor featuring soloist Ilya Maximov.

Trumpets ring out as Shostakovich prepares to cut loose and party. Sergei Prokofiev meets a French violinist and writes a concerto with a Spanish sizzle: music that sings, dances and tingles in the ear. And, exiled from Russia, Sergei Rachmaninov discovers a glittering world of fast cars and big bands – and pours it all into a symphony that still, somehow, yearns and aches for a homeland he would never see again. All music tells a story and tonight, guest conductor Robert Trevino recreates a world of revolution, exile and burning emotions: three very different but equally colourful 20th-century Russian masterpieces, striking sparks off each other. RPO Artist-in-Residence Johan Dalene takes the spotlight in Prokofiev’s vibrant Violin Concerto No.2, the perfect showcase for Gramophone’s 2022 Young Artist of the Year.

The young “Russian genius” (Corriere della Sera) came to international prominence when, in 2014, he won the International Tchaikovsky Competition for Young Musicians at age thirteen. “Contrary to what could be expected of a youngster …, he demonstrated not only high technical accuracy but also an incredible maturity. Crystal clear sounds and perfect balance revealed his exceptional ability” (Amadeus). Malofeev has quickly established himself as one of the most prominent pianists of his generation. His performances have garnered high praise from critics, with publications such as Der Standard declaring his debut at the Musikverein as “a world piano revolution”.

Conductor Xian Zhang brings out the pain and pleasure of Tristan and Isolde. NWS brings new energy to Holst’s orchestral masterpiece The Planets. Inspired by astrology, Holst gave human personalities to each planet, from Mars, Bringer of War to Neptune, the Mystic. Alexander Malofeev, a 22-year-old “Russian genius” and phenom pianist, takes on one of the best-loved works by Sergei Rachmaninoff.

It gives us great pleasure to be touring across Europe to distribute musical calling cards from our wide-ranging repertoire to audiences elsewhere – who may well be curious. Jakub Hrůša once said that he loves it when people »really come with an open heart and are open to experiencing something completely new – and then relate it to what they already know«. At the request of the exceptionally gifted pianist Daniil Trifonov, this time the tour takes us to numerous places in Central Europe, to concert halls that we haven't performed in for a long time. In our suitcases we bring those exciting works that we have presented to our esteemed Bamberg audience for a long time – and although we are now travelling around for a while, we will of course always return to our beloved »home port« on the Regnitz later on.

Tsybuleva grew up in a small village in the Caucasus mountains, where nature and the beauty of her surroundings proved a constant source of inspiration. These beginnings have fed directly into the development of her artistry, characterised by a captivating intimacy: drawing the listener into a private sphere of music-making in even the largest of concert halls. For this eagerly-anticipated return to his home city, he joins John Wilson’s all-star Sinfonia of London. Comprising section leaders of many of the UK’s and Europe’s greatest orchestras, it’s rapidly become the hottest ticket in town. Renowned for its expressive flair and knife-edge attack, it’s amassed so many coveted awards with its peerless recordings (including an unprecedented hattrick at the 2024 BBC Music Magazine awards) that its trophy cabinet must be straining under the weight.

Shostakovich’s quietly subversive Cello Concerto No 2 sits at the heart of a concert also showcasing Rachmaninov’s opus-numbered symphonic debut – a work teeming with Russian colour, expansive melodies, and protean energy. First though, we button-up for the London premiere of Kenneth Hesketh’s reworking of music from his opera The Overcoat. 


‘John Wilson is the most exciting British conductor since Simon Rattle’ declares the Sunday Times. And his Sinfonia of London just can’t help picking up awards. Sheku Kanneh-Mason is no stranger to glittering prizes himself. Having won the 2016 BBC Young Musician of the Year with a performance of Shostakovich’s first Cello Concerto, he’s latterly championed its sequel; ‘throwing down ‘a challenging gauntlet that probes ever deeper the composer’s enigmatic and gritty late style’. (The Arts Desk).

Gorgeous late-romantic soundscapes – featuring works by Josef Suk and Leoš Janáček, who are among Jakub Hrůša’s favourite composers. It is thus a matter of the heart for him to regularly introduce audiences to pieces by these fascinating composers that are still relatively unknown outside the Czech Republic. The captivating »Asrael« Symphony already delivered proof of how well this works – and Josef Suk is also being celebrated this year on the occasion of his 150th birthday with an imposing musical autobiography: the programme includes his tone poem »Zráni«, finished in 1917, revolving around human maturity and elevating love to the core aspiration of our existence. Even the conductor of the premiere was absolutely enthusiastic, as he is said to have kissed the score in front of the concert audience and exclaimed in honour of Smetana’s famous cycle: »A second fatherland!« Janáček’s grandiose work was composed at virtually the same time – the scoring of a story about a Cossack culminating in a marvellous apotheosis. Jakub Hrůša fell in love with this composition, as he explained in an interview: »'Taras Bulba' is at the centre of my musical life. I didn't choose it, it just so happened. It was the first work and I’m still in love with it.« The brilliant »Paganini Rhapsody« by Rachmaninov from 1934 – who once answered the question »What is music?« in his typically poetic language: »That which goes from heart to heart, love.« – is also an emotional companion to the two Bohemian pieces.

Who could have known that the opening theme of Richard Strauss’ iconic 1896 tone poem would become one of today’s most recognizable sound bites? From the epic 1968 sci-fi film 2001: A Space Odyssey to 2023’s Barbie, this work continues to thrill audiences around the world. We felt it was the perfect way to open our 50th season. If you haven’t heard it in the exquisite Concert Hall yet, you’re in for a treat. Our Opening Night performance will also feature a new listening experience for Vista Philharmonic fans, with Grammy-winning modern composer Mason Bates’ Sea-Blue Circuitry. This astounding accomplishment of contemporary classical is a shimmering, colorful workout for the orchestra. With virtuosity and passion at his fingertips, our guest artist – piano phenom Joshua Mhoon – transcends boundaries and captivates audiences worldwide. Mr. Goodyear began his training at The Royal Conservatory in Toronto, received his bachelor's degree from Curtis Institute of Music, and completed his master's at The Juilliard School. Known as an improviser and composer, he has been commissioned by orchestras and chamber music organizations, and performs his own solo works. First Prize Winner of the 2022 YCA Susan Wadsworth International Auditions and Finalist in the 2023 Rubinstein Piano Competition, Chaeyoung Park has been praised as a passionate pianist who “does not play a single note without thought or feeling” (New York Concert Review). Embracing a broad range of the classical music literature, her programs feature works ranging from the early French Baroque by Rameau, to Beethoven sonatas, to new music by living composers including South Korean classical composer Unsuk Chin. Through Park’s various roles as a recitalist, chamber musician, and concerto soloist, she has performed at Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall, Bravo! Vail Music Festival, Tongyeong International Music Festival, Ravinia’s Bennett Gordon Hall and Symphony Center’s Orchestra Hall.
