The Sestetto Stradivari, composed of members of the Orchestra dell' Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia in Rome, has earned an excellent reputation since its founding in 2001. As one of the few string sextets with a permanent ensemble, it devotes itself with skill and passion to the masterpieces composed for this magnificent ensemble.

Young artists from Caramoor’s Evnin Rising Stars mentoring program perform in a pair of afternoon concerts for which the program’s Artistic Director, cellist Marcy Rosen, is joined by distinguished artists Ani Kavafian, violin, and Becca Albers, viola. These concerts are the capstone of a weeklong residency at Caramoor in which these young musicians participate in workshops, reading sessions, and ensemble rehearsals, culminating in live performances with their mentors. Since 1992, this program has identified some of the finest musicians of the next generation and helped them cross the threshold from their student years into the early stages of a professional career.

Before Dmitri Shostakovich became a composer-critic of the Stalin dictatorship, the music world experienced him as a carefree, talented child prodigy: for example in his first piano trio, which the seventeen-year-old wrote during his studies - a one-movement, grand, racing flight of thought by a genius who had perfected his skills at an early age. Also worth discovering is the piano quintet by the far too unknown Polish romantic composer Juliusz Zarębski, which he dedicated to his teacher Franz Liszt.

The roads in Central Europe were long and uncomfortable back in the 18th century. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s reports of stagecoach journeys, which he would have spent with his face contorted in pain and his bottom up in the air, bear vivid witness to this … Nevertheless, even in the time before Instagram & Co, music could not be stopped – it made its way from one musical metropolis to another, there was a lively exchange not only of sheet music, but also of musicians travelling from Vienna to Prague, from Augsburg to Milan, or from Bonn to Paris and back. The seat of the Churcöllnian prince and his Rhine metropolis were a centre of attraction for virtuosos from near and far. High-ranking musicians from different generations played together in the fantastic chapel and their employer’s library was one of the best in the entire empire. Naturally, such a modern court knew what was in vogue in London and Rome – as well as in Paris. The pre-revolutionary capital of France was also one of the musical capitals of the continent and there were important impulses in all directions. We play music associated with the city on the Seine, which was recognised and performed in Bonn. Fortunately, the electoral archives were anything but a Rhenish clique: every copy of music, every score and every part was recorded down to the last detail and every performance was documented. So, off to Paris: Allons-y!

Hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time”, she is the winner of Guitar Player magazine’s Best Classical Guitarist award, Germany’s Echo Klassik, Concert Artists Guild’s Virtuoso Award, the Toronto and Madrid Queen Sofia competitions, and the first guitarist to win the Munich ARD Competition. Designed for accomplished adult enthusiasts, including advanced high school and college students, this workshop offers a rare opportunity to meet like-minded musicians and play in small ensembles. Participants will receive ensemble music in advance to prepare for a collaborative and enriching experience. 

The workshop will feature guidance and insights from Michael Adams and the 2024 Fellowship String Quartet, the Cabaletta Quartet. Attendees who also purchase tickets for the Community Concert at 5 pm will enjoy reserved front-row seating and the chance to participate in the Pachelbel play-along.

The centerpiece of this program is the Quartetto Concertante, op 55, by Pedro Ximenez Abrill Tirado (1784-1856), the most prolific South American composer of the first half of the 19th century. Ximenez, born in Peru during the independence movement that led to the country’s founding, hosted a famous salon at his home that was celebrated by artists and revolutionaries alike. At the invitation of the Bolivian president in 1833, Ximenez became Maestro de Capilla in Sucre, the Bolivian capital, a post he held until his death. The first half of the program includes favorites from Ximenez’s European contemporaries, Boccherini, Haydn, and Mozart.

Composed between 1804 and 1808, Beethoven's Symphony No. 5 stands as one of his most renowned works. Its’ iconic opening motif, with its memorable rhythm 'duh-duh-duh-duuuh', is instantly recognisable. Often referred to as ‘the Fate Symphony’ (German: Schicksalssinfonie), the famous opening four-note gesture is believed to symbolise fate knocking at the door. It reflects Beethoven's lifelong personal struggles including his increasing deafness.

AHE’s presents the world premiere of William Watts's version of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, arranged around 1820. This unique arrangement is quite unlike any large-scale symphonic recording you may have heard or may be expecting!

The Escher String Quartet has received acclaim for its profound musical insight and rare tonal beauty. A former BBC New Generation Artist and recipient of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, the quartet has performed at the BBC Proms at Cadogan Hall and is a regular guest at Wigmore Hall. In its home town of New York, the ensemble serves as season artists of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center.

The 2021-2022 season finds the Escher Quartet touring the U.S. extensively, performing in numerous cities and venues including New York’s Alice Tully Hall and Rockefeller University, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, La Jolla Music Society, Savannah Music Festival, and Chamber Music Society of Detroit. Internationally, the quartet returns to Wigmore Hall in London and the Sociedad Filarmonica de Bilbao.

The Conducting Forum is the German Music Council's support program for top young conductors in Germany. The Nuremberg Symphony Orchestra is a regular partner of this program. The final concerts are both the finale of the four-year funding program for scholarship holders in the orchestral conducting category and a possible preliminary stage for the German Conducting Award 2024. Two of the candidates will be sent directly by the jury to the competition, which will be held in the Cologne Philharmonic Hall in autumn in cooperation with the WDR Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne and the Cologne Opera. Faythe Vollrath, harpsichordist, is actively heard as a soloist and chamber musician throughout the United States. Hailed by the Wall Street Journal for her “subtly varied tempo and rhythm that sounds like breathing,” her solo performances include venues such as MusicSources in Berkeley, California, Gotham Early Music in New York City, and Bruton Parish Church in Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. Other unique experiences include a solo performance pairing Japanese harpsichord works with Japanese art at the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and performing in a columbarium as part of the Garden of Memory in Oakland. Enamored with the contrast of new music written for historic instruments, Faythe combines these new vs. old elements in many of her performances. Concerts dedicated specifically to this pursuit include the Festival of New American Music in Sacramento, and the Center for New Music in San Francisco. She has performed concerts of new music in both Serbia and France, introducing new American composers to the audience.

Schubert’s final chamber music work has been described as “sublime,” “extraordinary” and as possessing “bottomless pathos,” and is generally regarded as his finest chamber work. The format of a string quintet with two cellos instead of two violas was very much Boccherini’s special genre. A cellist himself, Boccherini freed at least one of the cellos from providing the bass line, so as to soar lyrically.

You can enjoy not only the whistling of birds in the restful greenery of the woods of Waterloo just outside Brussels; for decades music can also be heard here among nature. Indeed, the Queen Elisabeth Music Chapel is where the crème de la crème of young international soloists study. After graduating from the world’s most prestigious conservatories, musicians come from all over the world to delve further into the repertoire. With intensive study, practical lessons from a sublime teaching staff and master classes by the world’s most famous performers – here the next generation is prepared for a glittering career in classical music. Consequently, many of them soon end up as laureates of the famous Queen Elisabeth Competition.

This exclusive pre-season salon concert is limited to Patrons of the American Classical Orchestra and those who purchase individual tickets in advance.  It offers the intimate private-setting experience typical of classical music performed during the 1700s.

The program opens with one of Antonio Vivaldi’s best-known works, Concerto in G Major, RV 151, popularly known as Concerto alla Rustica.  Concertos typically feature soloists, but this one avoids them, showcasing the entire chamber group.  Frequently performed during Vivaldi’s lifetime, its popularity remains strong.  It has been featured in many films and TV series including Bob Fosse’s All That Jazz, Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, and Freaky Tuesday, Liz Flahive’s and Carly Mensch’s Season 3 Episode of GLOW for Netflix.

When the Pacifica Quartet and guitarist Sharon Isbin join forces, magic happens. They’ll begin with Sharon Isbin’s own arrangement of Vivaldi’s delightful Guitar Concerto in D. Joseph Schwantner's Song of a Dreaming Sparrow was commissioned by the 92nd Street Y in New York and received its world premiere last November. It’s the second work Schwantner composed for the multiple Grammy Award-winning guitarist. The title is a line from Thoreau’s, “A Week on the Concord and Merrimack River” a narrative of a boat trip Thoreau took with his brother John in 1839: “At intervals we were serenaded by the song of a dreaming sparrow.” The collaboration resumes with the catchy Fandango from Boccherini’s Guitar Quintet No. 4. Beethoven’s astonishing and profound late string quartet in A minor concludes the program. Its famous third movement entitled “Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity from a convalescent in the Lydian mode” is a prayer of gratitude following illness and an expression of joy for the gift of life. Don’t miss this evening of extraordinary artistry as Sharon Isbin and the Pacifica Quartet take the stage in Harris Concert Hall!
