This extraordinary program presents a work of the powerful, contemporary voice of composer Carlos Simon, whose works resonate with history, hope, and heart. Pianist Artina McCain returns to perform George Gershwin’s brilliant Piano Concerto in F, a work that blends classical traditions with the bold rhythms of jazz and pulses with energy, romance, and the unmistakable spirit of the American Jazz Age. The program closes with Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: Dream of America, a poignant and inspiring tribute to the immigrants who shaped the American story. Innovative in its format, the work brings elements of the theater and multimedia into the concert hall, employing actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives. The spoken texts for the work come from the Ellis Island Oral History Project, an historic collection of interviews with actual immigrants about their experiences emigrating to America. This dynamic work reminds us of the hopes, struggles, and dreams that built a nation.

The ASU Symphony Orchestra is joined by the acclaimed Harlem Quartet for a dynamic evening of chamber–symphonic collaboration, featuring Bernstein’s West Side Story concerto. Known for its genre-spanning performances and deep commitment to musical equity, Harlem Quartet brings its distinctive voice to the orchestral stage in a program shaped by dialogue, contrast, and expressive range.

Los Angeles favorite Thomas Wilkins returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall for a holiday inflected program. In 1960, Duke Ellington merged the Tchaikovsky ballet with his own aesthetic, transforming the Sugar Plum Fairy into Sugar Rum Cherry and “The Dance of the Reed-Pipes” into “Toot Toot Tootsie Toot” creating an instant American classic with his spin on the Russian chestnut. But Tchaikovsky gets his full due with his enchanting First Symphony, which the composer lovingly called “a sin of my sweet youth.” From its chilly opening along a winter journey and through misty landscapes, the composer eventually arrives in a spring filled with the blooms of flowers and young love.

This Thanksgiving, explore cultural roots and the concept of “home.” Simon’s Tales draws on African American folklore, traditions, and spirituals, while Bielawa connects to violin solist Tessa Lark's American roots in Appalachia in her work PULSE. Copland’s theme from Appalachian Spring, based on the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts,” evokes simplicity, peace, and community. In contrast, Dvořák’s Symphony No. 7, written during a period of personal struggle, reflects his Czech heritage and the political turmoil of his homeland.

In works like the Piano Concerto in F and American in Paris, Gershwin captured our national sound by blending all the styles he knew—jazz, blues, classical, sacred Hebrew laments, Eastern European hoedowns, and Broadway balladeering. CYS returns to Hertz Hall at UC Berkeley on March 30th with the Senior Orchestra performing a stellar program that features the US premiere orchestral performance of Ukrainian composer Sergei Golovko’s Colombian Marimba Concerto. We are thrilled and honored to present this magnificent work, which will be performed by CYS’s own Apple Gao, winner of the Young Artist Competition for the 2024-25 CYS Season. The Colombian Concerto takes us on a Latin American voyage complete with drum set, electric guitar, jazz piano, as well as the supremely virtuosic solo marimba as they make use of Latin American dances, rhythms, harmonies, and melodies. It is a work that is guaranteed to please everyone!

Daniel Bolshoy returns to join forces with Symphony Nova Scotia" class="css-u850">Symphony Nova Scotia" class="css-u850" data-mark-multiple="true">Symphony Nova Scotia for two virtuoso guitar showpieces. An Israeli-Canadian guitarist and educator, he has performed as a soloist with more than 60 orchestras internationally, and returns to Symphony Nova Scotia after his triumphant performance in 2016. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 is a delightful departure from his early works, with its cheerful and energetic mood that is sure to lift your spirits. Its four movements offer a diverse range of melodies and rhythms to keep you engaged and entertained while pulling at your heartstrings.

The National Symphony Orchestra and its nearly 100 musicians are coming to the Arsht Center for the first time. Led by Milan-born music director Gianandrea Noseda and based at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., “one of the hardest-working orchestras in the biz” (The Washington Post) is known for its “exhilarating performances” (The New York Times). The Economist proclaimed that “the Italian maestro and the NSO make magic.”

Dominant alpha males or sensitive organisers: conductors are very different – and one might think that the profession has been around forever. Compared to many others, however, it is still relatively young: it only emerged in the 19th century. Before that, only one of the players or the composer himself made a few hand gestures from the piano. But during the Romantic period in particular, the ensembles became larger and larger and the scores became more complex. A person was now needed to coordinate everything in order to avoid chaos. Mendelssohn is regarded as the first conductor in today’s understanding of the term, who set the standard as Gewandhauskapellmeister. He was followed by other big names in Leipzig, including Arthur Nikisch, Wilhelm Furtwängler, Bruno Walter, Kurt Masur and Herbert Blomstedt. Since 2018, Andris Nelsons has been holding the strings together there – but he also loves conducting our orchestra, and we are delighted that he is coming back to Bamberg. Because he is a phenomenon: he lives, breathes and loves music – and celebrates this with an unmistakable trademark of virtually painted lines, conveying strong emotions. The programme he has chosen combines dance works from East and West – after all, music is a wonderful means of building bridges across borders: His Latvian compatriot Arturs Maskats wrote an exciting tango in 2002, while Carlos Simon wrote the colourful »Four Black American Dances« in 2022. There is also a beguiling feast for the ears with Rimsky-Korsakov’s caleidoscope about the storyteller Scheherazade – and Andris Nelsons will certainly conduct again in the same way as he once mentioned in an interview: »Ultimately, you have to follow your heart, that’s where the impulse comes from.«

'Irresistible zest, controlled impetuosity, dreamy sensibility and a nostalgic expression' – Berlioz on performing his own music

Rafael Payare is at the helm for what is sure to be a spellbinding RCM Symphony Orchestra concert, featuring Berlioz’ dramatic and passionate Symphonie fantastique as well as Carlos Simon's piece inspired by an entry in Beethoven’s journal, 'Fate Now Conquers', and Beethoven's First Piano Concerto performed by Magdalene Ho.

Berlioz was a Romantic through and through, and the young man at the heart of the Symphonie fantastique’s story might have been the composer himself, his obsessive nature represented by a recurring motif or ‘ideé fixe’. In the opening ‘Reveries, Passions’, Berlioz conjures up what he called ‘volcanic love’, followed by a waltzing ball scene and pastoral interlude. Then come the sinister ‘March to the Scaffold’ and nightmarish ‘Dream of a Witches’ Sabbath’, reflecting what Berlioz described as the key elements of his style: ‘passionate expression, inner warmth, rhythmic impetus and unexpectedness’.

Toledo Symphony Principal trombonist Garth Simmons makes a return solo appearance in Carlos Simon’s riveting concerto Troubled Water, inspired by stories told by enslaved African Americans and abolitionists about the Underground Railroad. The Montgomery Variations, by Margaret Bonds, is similarly inspired by episodes of our country’s history, in this case, the Civil Rights movement, with the city of Montgomery, AL as a focal point. Tchaikovsky's Symphony No. 4 is a towering symphonic structure that explores themes of fate and destiny through lush orchestration and heart-rending melodies.

Karen Slack, the 2022 Sphinx Medal of Excellence winner and a featured soloist from The Jonah People, is one of today’s most celebrated sopranos. Widely admired for her voice of extreme beauty and dramatic depth, she returns to the Schermerhorn Symphony Center with her latest work, African Queens. This performance features new music written specifically for her by both African and American composers, each song reflecting the beauty, humility, passion, and power of a different queen. The program includes works by Jasmine Barnes, Damien Geter, Jessie Montgomery, Shawn Okpebholo, Dave Ragland, Carlos Simon, and Joel Thompson, with texts by Lorene Cary, Alicia Haymer, Tsitsi Ella Jaji, Deborah D.E.E.P Mouton, and Creative Collaborator Jay Saint Flono. Presented without the Nashville Symphony, this concert promises a rich tapestry of musical and narrative elements that celebrate the legacy and influence of African queens through a contemporary lens.
