For all their individual strengths—Polenzani’s tenor of sheen and power, Drake’s expressivity—the message of greater value was in the one-ness.”

Chamber Orchestra of New York’s Valentines-themed concert features bass-baritone Antoin Herrera-Lopez Kessel in Gerald Finzi’s “Let us garlands bring” and Grieg’s charming Holberg Suite. Superstar bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel brings unique charm to an eclectic mix of styles. Alongside harpist Hannah Stone and pianist Annabel Thwaite, Terfel performs a song cycle, traditional Welsh folk music, and songs by notable composers.

Grammy and Gramophone Award winner Sir Bryn Terfel performs a distinctive mix of the music for which he is so renowned. The first half of the program includes the sounds of home in traditional Welsh songs and works by 19th- and 20th-century Welsh and British composers. The second half of the program features a particularly beautiful collection of songs by Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Debussy, as well as a heartfelt selection from Les Misérables. Exquisite instrumental interludes put a welcome spotlight on harpist Hannah Stone (recently the Official Harpist to the Prince of Wales) and pianist Annabel Thwaite.

Our 23/24 Masterworks Season kicks off with award-winning guest pianist Maxim Lando making his debut in Capitol Theatre. He returns to Madison, having last been seen outdoors in our 2022 season of Concerts on the Square. The season opens with an early Symphony No. 13 in D by Haydn, followed by the ever-popular Love's Labour’s Lost Suite by Finzi, and closes with Brahms’ mighty Piano Concerto No. 2 in B flat major played by Maxim. Since audiences have last seen him, Lando was awarded the First Prize at the New York Liszt International Piano Competition in November 2022 at Carnegie Hall. Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed in 1905 to show off the virtuosity of players in the string section of the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra.
20th Century Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz showcases each section—violins, violas, cellos and double basses—and makes each the soloist in her Concerto for String Orchestra.
Achingly beautiful, Eclogue for Strings by British composer Gerald Finzi was originally intended to be a grand piano concerto. The one-movement piece that emerged instead—never performed during the composer’s lifetime—is played by San Francisco-born Elizabeth Dorman.
Dvořák’s talent for melody-making is at the fore in Serenade for Strings, a rich and soulful piece than takes listeners on a journey from its mellow opening, through a graceful waltz, to a jubilant finale.

Artistic Partner Richard Egarr returns with a program that opens with works by British composers, including Benjamin Britten’s evocative Serenade featuring tenor David Portillo and the SPCO’s own Principal Horn, Jay Ferree. The concert bids farewell to England and continues with two beloved arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Finishing the program is Franz Schubert’s “Little C Major” Symphony — a deceptive nickname — it was Schubert’s first fully symphonic work with a substantial wind section.

With two collections of songs composed by George Butterworth and Gerald Finzi, we move into a British landscape with hedges, rolling hills and small idyllic villages. Butterworth composed “Love Blows as the Wind Blows” with strong inspiration from English folk music, and Finzi sets “Let us Galands Bring” to music for texts by William Shakespeare, which are about death and love and everything in between.
