This year’s Featured Artist, baritone Roderick Williams OBE, will perform a unique recital in the round with pianist Christopher Glynn at Westminster Hall. For his program, entitled An English Song Winterreise, Williams has chosen English songs which reflect each of the 24 individual songs that make up Franz Schubert’s Winterreise to craft a unique musical journey. This curated song cycle will include works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Benjamin Britten, and Gerald Finzi, as well as more modern works by Judith Weir and Errollyn Wallen.

Canadian pianist Angela Hewitt is known for her interpretations of Bach, and Bach is also available in PianoEspoo's extensive selection. Bach's Piano Concerto in G minor may sound familiar, as it is the composer's arrangement of his Violin Concerto in A minor. In 1784, Mozart did not hesitate to advertise his quintet for piano and wind instruments to his father: "The best work I have composed so far". Many could argue that the C major concerto, completed the following year with its charming slow movements, surpasses even that.

At a time when the continent was celebrating with great verve a final indulgence in grandiose late romanticism, then the battle to turn away from tonal "harmonious sounds" was fought and finally the search for absolutely "new" sound systems was carried out, the English composers were above all taking time: time to reassure themselves through composition of the wealth of English folklore, the beauty and diversity of "their" landscape, the sublime greatness of cultural tradition and the power of English wit, time to find a musical-English identity, time to make England a characteristic musical nation again. And so there is a lot going on in this concert: Ralph Vaughan Williams ("Charterhouse Suite") and Gerald Finzi (Romance op. 13), both associated with the so-called English pastoral school, paint enchanting still lifes and transport their listeners to a wonderful English dream world. A few decades later, Benjamin Britten proved in his enchanting song cycle "Les Illuminations" that a true Brit can also be inspired by French poetry to play with very English tones. And the bird of paradise of English music, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, concludes by calling for people to enjoy life and live with (not only) English wit.

With two collections of songs composed by George Butterworth and Gerald Finzi, we move into a British landscape with hedges, rolling hills and small idyllic villages. Butterworth composed “Love Blows as the Wind Blows” with strong inspiration from English folk music, and Finzi sets “Let us Galands Bring” to music for texts by William Shakespeare, which are about death and love and everything in between.

Grammy and Gramophone Award winner Sir Bryn Terfel performs a distinctive mix of the music for which he is so renowned. The first half of the program includes the sounds of home in traditional Welsh songs and works by 19th- and 20th-century Welsh and British composers. The second half of the program features a particularly beautiful collection of songs by Schubert, Robert Schumann, and Debussy, as well as a heartfelt selection from Les Misérables. Our 23/24 Masterworks Season kicks off with award-winning guest pianist Maxim Lando making his debut in Capitol Theatre. Elgar’s Introduction and Allegro was composed in 1905 to show off the virtuosity of players in the string section of the newly formed London Symphony Orchestra.
20th Century Polish composer and violinist Grażyna Bacewicz showcases each section—violins, violas, cellos and double basses—and makes each the soloist in her Concerto for String Orchestra.
Achingly beautiful, Eclogue for Strings by British composer Gerald Finzi was originally intended to be a grand piano concerto. The one-movement piece that emerged instead—never performed during the composer’s lifetime—is played by San Francisco-born Elizabeth Dorman.
Dvořák’s talent for melody-making is at the fore in Serenade for Strings, a rich and soulful piece than takes listeners on a journey from its mellow opening, through a graceful waltz, to a jubilant finale.

The concert bids farewell to England and continues with two beloved arias by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Finishing the program is Franz Schubert’s “Little C Major” Symphony — a deceptive nickname — it was Schubert’s first fully symphonic work with a substantial wind section.

Welcome to a concert with Esbjerg Ensemble's own musicians as soloists and with oboe, horn and percussion at the center. 

Look forward to Gerald Finzi's beautiful  Interlude in A minor , played by our oboist David Daniel Dinu, where the interaction with the homogeneous sound of the string quartet emphasizes the lyrical sound of the oboe. And to Jovilet's Sérénade , where the oboe is again at the forefront of the soundscape, but in the interaction with the rest of the ensemble retains its chamber musical expression.
