Founded 40 years ago, Concerto Köln is one of the outstanding protagonists of early music. It's fortunate that the journey to Duisburg is not far – and that the Duisburg Philharmonic also includes seasoned experts in musically informed performance practice. This creates ideal conditions for an extraordinary encounter in a concert that brings together well-known and lesser-known masterpieces by composers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Examples such as those of the Italian Antonio Vivaldi, the German George Frideric Handel, the Frenchman Jean-Philippe Rameau, the Bohemian Jan Dismas Zelenka, and the Englishman Henry Purcell demonstrate that all of Europe was shaken by the tremendous musical developments of this period. Some of these masters will perform "vocal specialties" – arias from operas or sacred works – or, like the piano pioneer Domenico Scarlatti, excerpts from their instrumental works. The name of countertenor Valer Sabadus, who is another guest from Cologne in Duisburg, shines as brilliantly as his voice.

For 70 years now, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra (hr-Sinfonieorchester Frankfurt) has been a regular guest at the Kassel Music Days – this time with the Russian conductor and harpsichordist Maxim Emelyanichev and a multifaceted program centered around the French Baroque. Two suites by Jean-Baptiste Lully and Jean-Philippe Rameau will be performed, as well as a Baroque-inspired ballet suite by Igor Stravinsky. Audiences can also look forward to a harpsichord concerto that is not yet 100 years old. Maxim Emelyanichev is considered a rising star of early music, approaching his work with tremendous curiosity and musical passion. He will even be at the harpsichord himself for Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty concerto.

A harpsichord concerto that's not even 100 years old? Yes, Francis Poulenc's "Concert champêtre" spices up the Baroque sound with modern harmonies, and the liaison is a resounding success. The suite theme is also explored in a unique way in this concert: two old pieces, one new – where freshness isn't a matter of era. 20th-century France looks back to the old masters of the Baroque: The conductor who brings this special perspective to the hr-Sinfonieorchester's "Baroque+" series is Maxim Emelyanychev. The Russian is considered a rising star of early music because he approaches his work without any affectation, but with tremendous curiosity and a true musical pulse. He conducts historically informed performance ensembles as well as large symphony orchestras and says: "I want to approach the music with a fresh perspective, but with the aim of performing it as it was possible back then." In Francis Poulenc's sparkling and witty "Concert champêtre," Emelyanychev himself will be at the harpsichord; he loves leading an ensemble from the keyboard: "It's a completely different connection with the orchestra than when you're just conducting. You feel like part of the whole."

Every year, Concerto Copenhagen, under the direction of Peter Spissky, holds an intensive workshop with classical music students from MGK, where they work on the special playing techniques and musical expressions that are prevalent in baroque music. The course concludes with a concert where students and CoCo musicians play works by Vivaldi, Handel and Rameau together.

Jean-Philippe Rameau was already 50 years old when he wrote his first opera, Hippolyte et Aricie, in 1733. Although Jean-Baptiste Lully—whose name at the time stood for French opera par excellence—had already died in 1687, the premiere sparked a bitter dispute between the conservative "Lullists" and the admirers of Rameau's daring, modern style. While some found his harmony too dissonant and his break with tradition scandalous, others were enthusiastic about the innovations that emerged from Rameau's long-standing preoccupation with questions of music theory and aesthetics. Les Indes galantes of 1735 was followed two years later by the tragédie en musique Castor et Pollux—Ramaeau's third completed opera. The premiere at the Paris Académie Royale de Musique was eagerly awaited, if only because of its subject matter; the mythical story of the two Dioscuri was a novelty on the musical theater stage at the time. Rameau himself probably suggested the material to the writer Pierre-Joseph Bernard, who wrote his first libretto, Castor et Pollux: The brothers, the mortal Castor and the immortal Pollux, are both in love with Télaïre, who herself prefers Castor. However, before the opera's action even begins, Castor is murdered. Pollux receives permission from his father Jupiter to free his brother from the underworld in order to reunite him with Télaïre, but he would have to pay for this with his own immortality. For Pollux, an inner struggle now begins between his brotherly loyalty to Castor and his desire for Télaïre. In Castor et Pollux, Rameau combined all the compositional elements for which he was equally famous and infamous, impressively conveying the respective dramatic situation musically in the sometimes highly virtuosic vocal lines as well as in the rich harmony and the differentiated timbres.

A new staging of Rameau’s Les Indes galantes combines exquisite 18th century music with the expressive potency of contemporary street dance styles in a one-of-a-kind exploration of identity, culture and expression. Co-conceived by director-choreographer and French hip hop pioneer Bintou Dembélé and conductor Leonardo García-Alarcón, the performance features their respective ensembles: the dancers of Structure Rualité, Namur Chamber Choir, and period orchestra Cappella Mediterranea, all making their UK opera debuts. Cappella Mediterranea is one of the most in-demand period ensembles in the world, having recently completed a Monteverdi cycle for the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, as well as engagements at the Opéra national de Paris, Salzburg Easter Festival, La Monnaie (Brussels), and Staatsoper Unter den Linden (Berlin). The production will also feature leading Baroque soloists Gwendoline Blondeel, Ana Quintans, Antonin Rondepierre and Andreas Wolf.

One of the most beautiful baroque opera-ballets ever composed, this is a rare chance to see Rameau’s musical masterpiece, in a carefully crafted new version which will also be performed at Teatro Real (Madrid) and Teatro alla Scala (Milan) among others. Be prepared to be swept away by powerful storytelling as this ornate period score fuses with the emotive physicality of street dance and hip hop styles, with electrifying and deeply moving results.

Many people - or should we say millions of people - know Hayato Sumino as Cateen, because under this artist or influencer name the pianist inspires a constantly growing online fan base for his art: people who otherwise don't have much to do with classical music. The young Japanese has been proving for years that he is also up to the demands of a "normal" concert career, for example with his victory at the PTNA piano competition in his home country in 2018 or his participation in the Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2021, which was closely followed by the media. As if these talents alone were not enough, Hayato Sumino also has a degree in engineering and is himself active as a composer and arranger. How does Mozart's "Turkish March", the third movement from the wonderful A major Sonata KV 331, sound when you chase it through all major and minor keys? In his 24 variations on this theme, Sumino provides the answer – and contrasts it with the lively arrangement of a Gershwin classic: “An American in Paris”, which also stops by Bochum for a quick visit.

It begins with the baroque Jean-Philippe Rameau and is far from over with George Gershwin's furious »I got rhythm«. »Jazzical Class« is Peter Fleckenstein, principal timpanist in the Gürzenich Orchestra, and clarinettist Žilvinas Brazauskas. As a duo, they have been cultivating the joyful clash of the most diverse genres since 2013. Connected by an entertaining moderation, their programme moves from classical music to tango to jazz, from »Little Green Cactus« to original compositions such as »Wartesaal« and back again with sophisticated arrangements and breakneck improvisations. The joy of playing and the humour with which they use their instruments is unmistakable: in addition to Bb clarinet, bass clarinet, vibraphone, xylophone, djembe and snare drum, they also use piano, voices and bodies. A little Italian boy is brought to France, enchants the king and has a stronger and more lasting influence on French musical life than any other: Jean-Baptiste Lully 's miraculous rise from an underage serf to "Conseiller secrétaire du roi" is not due to his musical talent. It is his dance numbers and parodies that enchant the future Sun King. He composes his own ballets and remains the Sun King's undisputed favorite composer for 25 years. He is the founder of the French national opera and writes the music for more than 50 stage works, as well as songs, motets and dances. His death is as dramatic as his life: during a rehearsal, the 55-year-old composer rams the heavy conductor's baton into his foot. The wound becomes infected and Lully, the dancer, dies because he refuses to have his foot amputated.

Experience an intimate evening of French-inspired chamber music with the Portland Baroque Orchestra's presentation of "Bach & Telemann: French Finesse." This program showcases the exquisite artistry of two esteemed German composers, Johann Sebastian Bach and Georg Philipp Telemann, who were not only contemporaries but also friends. Their works are infused with the sonic richness and rhythmic nuance of the French style, creating a unique vibrancy that captivates the senses.

The evening features Telemann’s Paris Quartet No. 1 in D Major, a piece that exudes graceful elegance and showcases the intricate interplay between the gamba, violin, flute, and harpsichord. Complementing this is Bach’s Trio Sonata in G Major, BWV 1038, which highlights his mastery of counterpoint and melodic development. The program also includes Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Concerto No. 5 in D Minor from "Pièces de clavecin en concerts," a work that blends the harpsichord with other instruments in a richly textured dialogue. Additionally, the Trio Sonata No. 1 in G Minor by Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre offers a glimpse into the innovative spirit of one of the few prominent female composers of the Baroque era.

Under the artistic direction of Julian Perkins, who will also perform on the harpsichord, the ensemble features Toma Iliev on violin and Joanna Blendulf on violoncello. Together, they bring to life the intricate and expressive qualities of these Baroque masterpieces, inviting listeners to embark on a journey through an exotic musical landscape.

A sculptor falls in love with his own beautiful creation; but this time, the gods are smiling and even cold stone can conceal a passionate heart.

The French harpsichordist, suggested The Washington Post, ‘is a master of his instrument with the sort of communicative gifts normally encountered in musicians twice his age. He internalizes the music he plays so completely that any interpretative ambivalence or miscalculation is unthinkable’. Jean Rondeau names his programme after a well-known piece with an enigmatic title by François Couperin, whose music features alongside that of Rameau and Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (c.1705-55), members of a younger generation of Couperin’s colleagues.

Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.
