Experience an intimate evening of French-inspired chamber music with the Portland Baroque Orchestra's presentation of "Bach & Telemann: French Finesse." The evening features Telemann’s Paris Quartet No. 1 in D Major, a piece that exudes graceful elegance and showcases the intricate interplay between the gamba, violin, flute, and harpsichord. Complementing this is Bach’s Trio Sonata in G Major, BWV 1038, which highlights his mastery of counterpoint and melodic development. The program also includes Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Concerto No. 5 in D Minor from "Pièces de clavecin en concerts," a work that blends the harpsichord with other instruments in a richly textured dialogue. Additionally, the Trio Sonata No. 1 in G Minor by Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre offers a glimpse into the innovative spirit of one of the few prominent female composers of the Baroque era.

Under the artistic direction of Julian Perkins, who will also perform on the harpsichord, the ensemble features Toma Iliev on violin and Joanna Blendulf on violoncello. The French harpsichordist, suggested The Washington Post, ‘is a master of his instrument with the sort of communicative gifts normally encountered in musicians twice his age. He internalizes the music he plays so completely that any interpretative ambivalence or miscalculation is unthinkable’. Jean Rondeau names his programme after a well-known piece with an enigmatic title by François Couperin, whose music features alongside that of Rameau and Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (c.1705-55), members of a younger generation of Couperin’s colleagues.

Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

Despite his venerable status as an artist, Lully is perhaps best known for his death: He struck himself in the foot with a long conducting staff (this was before conductors waived batons, and instead would keep the orchestra in time by banging a large staff on the floor) and subsequently died of the infected wound.

Rameau was one of the keyboard’s first great composers, and his works for harpsichord reveal powerful new possibilities when played on a modern piano. Mozart’s Piano Sonata in F Major follows, with an especially affecting slow movement that leads to a galloping, fleet-fingered finale. Felix Mendelssohn’s Variations sérieuses is a virtuosic masterpiece with a theme that is dazzlingly explored across 17 variations—usually in little more than 10 minutes combined. The concert concludes with Beethoven’s monumental “Hammerklavier” sonata, a true feat to perform and one of the piano’s greatest works.

Bach’s Easter Oratorio opens with a festive movement featuring trumpets and drums joyfully heralding an Easter celebration.

This triumphant liturgical work portrays a dramatized biblical story through four characters: Maria Jacobi (soprano), Mary Magdalene (mezzo-soprano), and the apostles Peter (tenor) and John (bass). Surprisingly, this masterwork, first written as a cantata for Easter Sunday’s mass, is a reimagined expansion on a birthday cantata he wrote for Duke Christian von Sachsen-Weißenfels just two weeks before the Oratorio’s premiere. He continued to refine and embellish the Easter Oratorio up to the final few years of his life, adding arias and a four-part opening chorus, as well as altering instrument choices for select solos. The result is a superior example of Bach’s artistry and skill.

Bach’s Easter Oratorio invites the listener to indulge in intimate serenades. Solos and duets throughout the piece each offer their own charm, utilizing the unique character of an instrument to illustrate another component of the story. One duet between baroque flute and soprano paints Maria Jacobi (soprano) in dialogue with her own feelings or thoughts portrayed by the flute’s weaving melodic lines.

This performance will feature vocal soloists Clara Rottsolk (soprano), Meg Bragle (mezzo-soprano), Thomas Cooley (tenor), and Dashon Burton (bass-baritone).

Rameau’s Suite from Dardanus includes fourteen delightful musical vignettes. It opens in the spirit of a festive Renaissance dance highlighted by tambourin jingles and rhythmic drumming. The second and fourth movements star the baroque flutes’ floating melodies and luscious oboe lines. Movement five, Rigaudon, boasts captivating rhythmic undercurrents performed by the low strings. The final movement, Chaconne, features the warmth of the woodwind section, bright fanfares in the brass, and virtuosic passages in the strings leading to a satisfying, peaceful close.

The galant styles of High Baroque and Rococo music join hands in the mature works by Bach and Rameau. The Missa in A Major is a curious amalgam of the traditional and contemporary, featuring a pair of a relatively “new” instrument on the scene, the flauto traverso. And the ornate wizardry of Rameau's theatrical Dardanus brought the opera acclaim as one of his greatest compositions. A glance back to the Italian roots of the Baroque is revealed in Handel's and Vivaldi's concertos.
