The Alexander String Quartet and Robert Greenberg look back 100 years to the tumultuous social and political era of the early 20th century—times not unlike our own—and explore enduring works of the great music it produced. Programs will include works by Debussy, Ravel, Webern, Schoenberg, Sibelius, and Nielsen. 

While known for his loyalty to composers from his native Russia, Balanchine also displayed a deep affection for French music, as the dances in this program illustrate. The rarely seen Bourrée Fantasque, set to the music of Chabrier, includes romping comedy in the first movement and a blazing finale for the corps de ballet. Errante, originally titled Tzigane after the name of Ravel’s rhapsodic score and last revived for the 1993 Balanchine Celebration, returns in a staging by Suzanne Farrell, for whom it was choreographed in 1975. The evening also includes two disparate dances to Bizet scores: the animated pas de deux The Steadfast Tin Soldier, with its fairy-tale characters who spring to life, and Symphony in C, one of Balanchine’s most brilliant and cherished displays of the variety of classical style.

The Philadelphia Orchestra performs seminal works by Ravel and Debussy, and continues its celebrated partnership with Valerie Coleman with the New York premiere of her Concerto for Orchestra. Debussy’s La Mer is a perennial favorite, an impressionistic landmark of shimmering colors and suggestive harmonies. Ravel’s jazz-influenced Piano Concerto in G major is a joyful and varied masterpiece, and this ensemble gave its New York premiere in 1932 on this very stage. With this concert, the brilliant Mitsuko Uchida joins a great lineage of pianists to perform it here with this orchestra.

They call it the Belle Époque—in the early years of the 20th century, the French capital became a magnet for creatives, including Pablo Picasso, Claude Debussy, Gertrude Stein, Henri Matisse, and Marcel Proust. Steeped in that world, two friends, Igor Stravinsky and Maurice Ravel, combined lush harmonies with scintillating orchestral colors to become giants of modern music. Ravel tapped into his Spanish roots for his lusty and bombastic Alborada del gracioso, contrasted here with his delicate nod to the French Baroque. Closing the 2023/24 season, Maestro Stutzmann conducts Stravinsky’s watershed ballet, The Firebird, a titanic and lustrous dazzler in the hands of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The program pairs these works with one of the great monuments for solo violin, the Beethoven Violin Concerto featuring the much-anticipated return of the German violin virtuoso Veronika Eberle, who wowed Atlanta audiences in 2018 with her “totally on fire” (ArtsATL) performance of Brahms.

The 2024 concert season at Tippet Rise kicks off with a debut recital by esteemed pianist Jean-Efflam Bavouzet. In 2022, pianist Angela Hewitt was the only live performer for BBC Radio’s broadcasts after the funeral and committal of Queen Elizabeth II. An artist of rare sensitivity lands in Fort Worth to perform Mozart’s jubilant Piano Concerto No. 25, with all its fanfares and filigree, before conductor Jane Glover leads the orchestra in Mozart’s 31st symphony (“Paris”). Filling out the program are Benjamin Britten’s Suite on English Folk Tunes and Ravel’s Tombeau de Couperin (Grave of Couperin), written in memory of a French composer.
