When the 22-year-old Mozart was working on his second flute concerto, the later composer of the "Magic Flute" was not particularly fond of the instrument: "Then I'll be stuffed" (i.e. reluctant), he told his father, "if I have to write for an instrument that I don't like." And so he quickly managed to get his client, Ferdinand Dejean, to arrange his oboe concerto - a sleight of hand that of course does not detract from Mozart's cheerful and energetic music.

We open our 2024/25 season with a portrait of one of the most misunderstood pioneers of the early 20th-century avant-garde. Arnold Schoenberg's early works such as his Chamber Symphony, written in 1906, expanded the lush harmonies of late Romanticism to the extent that it scandalised audiences and incited them to riot at the strange physicality of the sounds they were hearing.

At a concert in Vienna on 25 January 1905, two new, constrastingly impactful orchestral works were heard for the first time. In his response to Maurice Maeterlinck’s drama on the doomed love between Pelleas and Melisande, Arnold Schoenberg (born 150 years ago) pushes a colossal symphony orchestra to its limits. But Alexander Zemlinsky wasn’t going to let Schoenberg (also his brother-in-law) steal the show, and wore his broken heart on his sleeve in his orchestral response to the well-known Hans Christian Andersen story The Little Mermaid. Ryan Bancroft marshals his BBC National Orchestra of Wales in two monumental tearjerkers that share far more than a birthday.

Both Gustav Mahler and Friedrich Rückert lost children. When Mahler came to set Rückert’s grief-stricken poems on the subject as his five Kindertotenlieder, he did so with music that appears emotionally stunned and radiantly consolatory. Leading international mezzo-soprano Alice Coote lends her glowing voice to these devastating songs, after Ryan Wigglesworth conducts his BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra in a symphony by Brahms that is both menacing and mellifluous. At the heart of the programme is Schoenberg’s sumptuous tone-poem Verklärte Nacht (‘Transfigured Night’), filled with crepuscular angst and decadent late-Romantic harmony.

“Look, how brightly the universe shines! Splendour falls on everything around…” Schoenberg’s chromatic and stunningly beautiful Transfigured Night draws inspiration from a poem about a woman harboring a dark secret and the man who loves her enough to forgive her. 2024 marks Schoenberg’s 150th birthday, as well as Bruckner’s 200th; this program continues the anniversary celebrations with some of the best-loved of Bruckner’s music, his Fourth Symphony. The hunt is on in this “Romantic” Symphony, which begins with daybreak and puts the horn section to work during its lively “Hunting of the Hare.” Music Director Peter Oundjian calls this inspired concert “the most beautiful program of the summer.”

The lost jewel.

In 1967, Balanchine revolutionized ballet. From an idea suggested by Claude Arpels of Van Cleef and Arpels, he created the first full length plotless ballet. Its theme was simple and beautiful —jewels. It’s three acts: Emeralds, to the music of Gabriel Fauré, Rubies, to the music of Igor Stravinsky, and Diamonds, to the music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

But Balanchine originally intended a fourth act. Sapphires, to the music of 20th century giant Arnold Schoenberg.

This year, for the worldwide celebration of Arnold Schoenberg's 150th birthday, ACB imagines what this jewel might have looked like, including costumes designed in line with the genius Barbara Karinska’s original concepts, and the exaltation of feminine beauty that was the ballet’s true subject.

"Verklärte Nacht," Schoenberg's first major work, is a string sextet inspired by a poem by Richard Dehmel. Despite its initial mixed reception, the piece has since been recognized as a masterpiece, particularly admired by Gustav Mahler.

The Roots Music Project, a new venue for us, is designed as a music incubator, offering a club-style concert space with a mix of seating options, including folding chairs and comfortable seating pods at the back. A cash bar will be available, and parking is provided onsite, with additional street parking if needed.

The evening is structured as a double-header concert, with "Schoenberg & More" starting at 7 PM and lasting approximately 90 minutes without intermission. Following a brief interlude, during which pizza will be available for purchase, the night will continue with the second show, "Electric Liederland: Hendrix Meets Mahler," starting at 9 PM.

These two masterpieces mark the extreme ends of the string trio genre. Mozart's late work, written three years before his death, was the first work written for string trio (and Mozart played viola at the premiere!). Schoenberg's autobiographical trio, too, was composed at the end of his life while recovering from a near-fatal heart attack. Both works take the listener along emotional extremes that range from great sadness to unfettered joy.

The LSU Wind Ensemble opens their season with a collection of works varied in both style and era, centered on Arnold Schoenberg’s cornerstone work Theme and Variations, op. 43a and Warren Benson’s powerful The Passing Bell, plus a solo appearance by Cecilia Kang, Associate Professor of Clarinet, performing Scott McAllister’s Black Dog.

Jacaranda opens its final season Planet Schoenberg on September 23 with Hanging Gardens. Schoenberg’s lush Book of the Hanging Gardens is a Late Romantic setting of bittersweet love poems by Stefan George. Its 1910 premiere received a lukewarm reception, but the tides turned in 1920 Paris when critics heard Schoenberg’s genius. Together pianist Steven Vanhauwaert and mezzo soprano Katarzyna Sadej take this forbidden journey into hanging gardens.  Under the direction of Jacaranda's music director Mark Alan Hilt, soprano Julia Metzler and the Jacaranda Chamber Ensemble will perform the chamber version of Gustav Mahler’s beloved Fourth Symphony—composed in 1900 and arranged by Schoenberg disciple Erwin Stein in 1920. The always pragmatic Arnold Schoenberg believed such arrangements offered clarity and an affordable way to hear unknown symphonic music, especially by his friend Mahler.

This dynamic interplay of piano and tap dance features pianist-composer Conrad Tao, who has been dubbed “the kind of musician who is shaping the future of classical music” by New York Magazine, and choreographer-dancer Caleb Teicher, about whom The New Yorker says: “mixing super-charged energy with tossed-off charm, Teicher is among the more promising figures in tap dance.” The pair come from two art forms, each with their own traditions and practices, but their collaboration explores the connections between them and the different ways the percussion of piano and tap relate to one another.

Left Coast Chamber Ensemble presents Starry Night, an evocative chamber music concert about dreams and moonlit walks and talks. When Arnold Schoenberg met the woman he would marry, he was taken over by such strong emotion that he committed his impressions to music. The string sexted Verklärte Nacht (Transfigured Night) follows the five stanzas of a poem with the same name, and though he’s now remembered for his work in atonality, this early offering is still as tonal and romantic as they come. After intermission, members of the FWSO will turn to Brahms’ G minor Piano Quartet, which finishes with its fiery Hungarian-style rondo.

Considered a “brilliant musician and an extraordinary visionary” (The Wall Street Journal), French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard enjoys an internationally celebrated career. As a master performer of Beethoven, Aimard recorded Beethoven’s entire catalogue of piano concertos and both the “Hammerklavier” Sonata and “Eroica Variations.” He is widely acclaimed as a key figure in the music of our time and has had close collaborations with many leading composers including György Ligeti, whose complete works for piano he has recorded. Praised by The Guardian as “one of the best Messiaen interpreters around,” Aimard has had a close association to the composer himself and with Yvonne Loriod, with whom he studied at the Paris Conservatoire.
