Marielle Murphy, a native of Carmel, California, is establishing an exciting career as coloratura soprano on opera and concert stages in the United States and Europe, in traditional as well as highly innovative productions. She made her European debut at the Salzburg Festival in Massenet’s Thaïs with Plàcido Domingo and the Munich Radio Orchestra, and numerous engagements in European opera houses quickly followed. Marielle made her debut at New York's Metropolitan Opera in the 2023/24 season as Oscar in Verdi’s Un Ballo in Maschera and returned to the Met in the 2024/25 season in Richard Strauss’ Die Frau ohne Schatten. For several years she has been based in Münster, Germany, where she is a leading soloist in the opera ensemble of the Theater Münster.

Marielle is accompanied by pianist Alden Gatt, assistant conductor of the Frankfurt Opera and performer at major venues around the world.

Robert Schumann's Fourth Symphony is simply the kind of music that makes you happy in your soul. It also makes you happy in your soul to see otherwise unknown composers receive the honor and dignity they deserve. This applies not least to female composers such as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel and Clara Wieck Schumann, who have otherwise stood in the shadow of their more famous (or just more male) family members. It is the composer Juliana Hodkinson who has arranged works by the two women for the large orchestra.

After Felix Mendelssohn left his parental home in Berlin in 1829, his sister Fanny, who was married to the court painter Wilhelm Hensel, took over the organisation of the family’s salon with its famous Sunday concerts. This was the only place where music lovers could hear her compositions, as for many years her professional ambitions were thwarted by her family. It was not until 1846 that Felix gave his blessing for his sister’s music to be published. Her last major work is the Piano Trio in D minor from 1847. Until recently, Fanny’s compositional talents remained more or less forgotten. Indeed, it was only at the very end of the 20th century that her work was systematically reviewed and edited for public performance.

Founded in 2017, the Reverón Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the most important chamber music ensembles from Latin America. Its members share a true passion in the performance of works by Latin American composers whose main goal is to introduce audiences to their rich repertoire of contemporary and standard works. These seasoned artists, all Venezuelan but now residing in the U.S., are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloging, performance, editing, and recording of this repertoire along with commissioning new works. Recent collaborations include La Hamaca (2021) and El Ventilador (2022), written for the trio by Venezuelan-American composer Ricardo Lorenz, and the world premiere of Barroqueada (2020) by Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Águila.

The Orchestra presents a Sunday afternoon celebration of women composers beginning with Fanny Mendelssohn, the older sister of the composer Felix Mendelssohn. Overture in C Major, her only composition ever for orchestra alone, debuted at one of her private salon concerts in 1834. It remained unpublished during her lifetime and was only published in 1994. The Battle for the Ballot, written by Stacy Garrop and narrated by Mayor Stephanie Terry, features excerpts from the speeches and writings of seven suffragists, which depict their struggle for the right to vote.

 

Elaine Hagenberg's By Night features the women of the Evansville Philharmonic Chorus. Inspired by Harriet Prescott Spofford's poem “By Night,” it describes a young woman who discovers a bold new world of thrilling beauty when she ventures beyond her familiar walls. Gabriela Ortiz is among the most prominent composers in Mexico, and her varied and distinct work, Kauyumari, meaning “blue deer” represents a spiritual guide, transformed through an extended pilgrimage into a hallucinogenic cactus called peyote.

Isata Kanneh-Mason makes her solo recital debut at Carnegie Hall following recent sold-out performances with her brother Sheku Kanneh-Mason. An ambitious program opens with Haydn’s Piano Sonata in C Major, Hob. XVI: 50, a piece replete with timeless character and Haydnesque quirks. Fanny Mendelssohn’s masterful Easter Sonata was a long-lost work that, once found, was wrongly credited to Felix Mendelssohn until shockingly recently. The second half of the recital comprises Robert Schumann’s Kinderszenen, a popular suite of 13 brief reminiscences on childhood, and Chopin’s brilliant and exceptionally difficult final piano sonata.

The Isidore Quartet recently burst onto the chamber music scene, winning a prestigious 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition. They make their Houston debut in a program featuring two extraordinary string quartets by Mozart and Mendelssohn – each composed before the composer’s 30th birthday – and a dazzling new work by Nicky Sohn, who is close in age to her distant contemporaries from the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by Miles Davis’s seminal recording of "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Sohn’s quintet, composed for the occasion to feature pianist Sarah Rothenberg and the Isidore Quartet, has its world premiere.

Based in Germany, the award-winning Esmé Quartet was formed by four Korean musicians who had been friends since childhood and has since gained a worldwide reputation as a chamber ensemble of exceptional artistry and achievement. Praised for their warm sound and powerful stage presence, the quartet brings together the performers’ brilliant and distinct musical personalities to form a cohesive, close-knit group that is passionately dedicated to the string quartet repertoire.

Esmé Quartet

We welcomed world-renowned violist and newest Artistic Partner Tabea Zimmermann back for a concert rich in history once forgotten. Starting with Fanny Mendelssohn’s Overture in C, which the composer wrote when she was about 25 years old, only for the work to be forgotten for over 150 years. Following the overture, Zimmermann performed as soloist in Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Potpourri (mit Fantasie), another work that languished in obscurity until recently. Felix Mendelssohn’s Scottish Symphony, inspired by the ruins of Holyrood Abbey in Edinburgh, closed the concert.

The intrepid ensemble shines a light on the sole string quartet written by Fanny Mendelssohn, an active 19th century composer whose works were largely unrecognized during her lifetime. Jeremy Denk joins the group for the second half with Schumann’s ebullient piano quintet, one of the very first works to pair the traditional string quartet configuration with piano. Dedicated to Clara Schumann, the fiendishly difficult piano part was first performed by Fanny Mendelssohn’s brother, Felix, when Clara fell ill, though she was at the keyboard for the first public performance a month later.

Winner of last year’s Gramophone Award in the Chamber Music category, the renowned Takács Quartet never fails to thrill in its Berkeley recitals. The hidden gem on the ensemble’s first 2022–23 program is Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel’s sole quartet of 1834, a bold, inventive, and distinctive work unperformed in her lifetime and forgotten until the score was discovered in the 1980s. This fascinating composition is bookended by Haydn’s ebullient final quartet and the first of Beethoven’s late-period quartets. “What endures about the Takács Quartet, year after year, is how equally the four players carry the music” (The Guardian).
