Pianist

American pianist Rachel Breen’s performances have been described as “truly show-stopping” (Gramophone UK) and having “a beautiful piano sound and original detail.” She has enjoyed an active and successful competition career and has performed and taught masterclasses around the world. In the first half of this concert Breen will perform a set of ten etudes by various composers that she arranged. There will be transcendental etudes, miniature etudes, nocturnal etudes, and one for repeated notes. John Bull’s Fantasia on Ut Re Mi Fa Sol La and Stravinsky’s Trois Mouvements de Petrushka will round out her program.

Rachel Breen Solo Recital Rachel Breen, based in Hannover, Germany, will travel to Mendocino to present an eclectic program featuring one of Schumann’s masterpieces, the Fantasy op. 17, as well as an intentionally arranged set of piano etudes by composers from all time periods. These etudes will come together to form a unified narrative—expect to be surprised!

Beethoven and Mendelssohn are icons of classical music. Don’t miss the chance to hear two of the most popular composers of all time. The not-to-be missed concert also features the Festival debut of two spectacular artists. Conductor Stephanie Childress makes her Festival debut with the music of Indian-American composer Reena Esmail, who weaves Hindustani ragas and Western classical techniques in the captivating, tuneful 11-minute Teen Murti ( Three Statues ). SMF Alumna Rachel Breen takes time out from her thriving European career to make her Festival solo debut with Ludwig van Beethoven’s bold Piano Concerto No. 1. The program concludes with a final first—Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 1, composed when he was just 15 and bursting with youthful vigor.

Breen will put her own stamp on Bach’s Goldberg Variations, Nicolai Medtner’s Sonata Op. 22 in G minor, and Beethoven’s last piano sonata, Sonata No. 32 in C minor, Op. 111.
