Three works that were created in the shadow of the world wars: Maurice Ravel actually wanted to create a monument to French music with "Le Tombeau de Couperin", and it is accordingly designed to be lively and optimistic. Completed during the First World War, Ravel took the title "Tombeau" as an opportunity to dedicate each of the individual movements to a fallen soldier from his circle of friends. For the day of liberation, when the oppressive period of the occupation of France would end, Francis Poulenc wrote "Figure humaine" in 1943. The Munich Philharmonic Choir sings this hymn to "Liberté", an impressive masterpiece for 12-part choir a cappella. Frank Martin also composed "In terra pax" in 1944 for the long-awaited first day of peace after the end of the Second World War. Premiered on May 7, 1945, the oratorio addresses grief and fear as well as exuberant joy and relief. The French conductor Alain Altinoglu will be in charge of this program.

It was the conductor Paul Sacher who inspired Frank Martin to focus on an instrumentation in a concert that one would actually associate with a baroque basso continuo. In the juxtaposition of two string orchestras with soloists on harp, piano and harpsichord, Martin created a constellation that is vaguely reminiscent of Bach's Brandenburg Concertos just before the end of the Second World War.

Around seven decades after the premiere of Wagner's "Tristan and Isolde", the Swiss composer Frank Martin set about retelling the same story - a bold undertaking given the enormous impact of Wagner's work. In any case, the pacifist Martin was not allowed to make any reference to Wagner's powerful Gesamtkunstwerk due to the Nazi rulers' appropriation of Wagner.

Hailed as “lively and sensational” by Montreal’s Arts and Opinion, and “flawless” by New York Concert Review, prize-winning violinist Iryna Krechkovsky enjoys an international career as soloist, chamber music collaborator, educator, and arts executive. Celebrated for her tone, emotionality, and precision, she has performed in concert venues from Zankel Hall at Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall in New York City, to The American Church in Paris, Chicago Cultural Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, and Seoul Arts Center in Korea.

Swiss composer Frank Martin extracts six monologue-like passages from Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s reworking of the medieval, “Everyman. The play of the rich man's death”, which traces the psychological development of the title character – from realisation of his impending death to revolt and despair, through to final acceptance of death. Martin’s essentially tonal, but extremely individually enriched music nestles closely with the text, until it fades off consolingly in C major. Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 6 is is somewhat overshadowed by its more popular neighbours. The composer, a great admirer of Richard Wagner, pays homage to his idol with a quote from Tristan and Isolde in the finale. Vladimir Jurowski, taking a strictly chronological approach to the Austrian symphonist’s œuvre, interprets this complex, rhythmically striking piece, described by its composer as the “perkiest” of his symphonies, which will now be performed for only the fourth time in the history of the Musical Academy.

Both create music through the flow of air, and yet they could hardly be more different: the powerful, large organ and the intimate, modest flute. In this concert, Thomas Ospital, organist of St Eustache Church in Paris, and Emmanuel Pahud, principal flautist of the Berliner Philharmoniker, demonstrate how well the two instruments go together – with dreamy, often highly virtuosic works by Jehan Alain, Camille Saint-Saëns and Frank Martin. The full splendour of the organ’s sound comes into its own in the transcription of Saint-Saëns’ Danse macabre as well as  in Liszt's Consolation and his variations on Johann Sebastian Bach’s “Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen”.

‘Nimrod’, one of music’s most endearing tributes, lies at the heart of the ‘Enigma’ Variations, and there are many more touching portraits to unveil here. Each movement dedicated to in his own words ‘his friends pictured within’. Edward Elgar loved cryptic codes and he hid one in his most famous work – it is still to be cracked even to this day.

At this youth concert, young people get to know the flute in all its facets, because the two works by Frank Martin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart couldn't be more different. Exciting virtuosity in Martin's ballad meets Mozart's delicate lightness, packaged in the form of a classical solo concerto. With Stathis Karapanos, we were able to get an international star for this concert. The young people sit on the stage at the youth concerts and thus have the opportunity to engage in direct interaction with the musicians.

When the 22-year-old Mozart was working on his second flute concerto, the later composer of the "Magic Flute" was not particularly fond of the instrument: "Then I'll be stuffed" (i.e. reluctant), he told his father, "if I have to write for an instrument that I don't like." And so he quickly managed to get his client, Ferdinand Dejean, to arrange his oboe concerto - a sleight of hand that of course does not detract from Mozart's cheerful and energetic music.

In the summer of 1917, Sergei Prokofiev played a trick on all those who had previously denounced him as a merciless futurist by composing his first symphony as a homage to Joseph Haydn and giving it the title "Symphonie Classique", "out of high spirits, to annoy the philistines", as he later revealed.

The Swiss composer Frank Martin felt magically attracted by the old language, inspired by Hans Sachs, in Hugo von Hofmannsthal's "Jedermann". For a song cycle, he chose six monologues from the main character in the play to musically trace his psychological and religious development as in a monodrama. Bo Skovhus, one of the most outstanding opera and concert singers of our time, interprets this fascinating work.

Program Six opens with George Balanchine’s Emeralds, the opening ballet in the choreographer’s renowned three-act ballet Jewels, the ballet whispers French perfume with its graceful clouds of tulle
in Romantic-length tutus. Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s tense psychological drama Las Hermanas* takes
a 180 degree turn from the splendor of the previous work. Profoundly musical, structurally complex,
yet exquisitely refined, the ballet is based on Federico García Lorca’s, The House of Bernarda Alba.
Las Hermanas is a remarkable dramatic ballet about sensuality under harsh repression as well as the emotional and violent consequences that follow. What better combination to bring audiences back from the weight of Las Hermanas than the brilliance of George Balanchine and George Gershwin? Closing Program Six, Who Cares? brings audiences through a wonderful series of solos, duets, quartets, and ensemble pieces all set to remarkable jazzy classics of Gershwin.

 ATHELAS has the great honor of inviting to a concert with the recipient of the Léonie Sonnings Musikpris 2024, the French-Swiss flautist Emmanuel Pahud. The concert on March 10 in Den Sorte Diamant is not only the first award recipient gives in connection with the award reception, but also the only one in concert in Copenhagen. We are proud to have conductor Anu Tali on stage at this fireworks display of a concert.

Delia Zaleski is a Senior at Carnegie Mellon University pursuing her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Flute Performance, studying with Alberto Almarza. During her time at Carnegie Mellon, she has participated in the Philharmonic, Wind Ensemble, Contemporary Ensemble, and several chamber groups. Last year, she won the 2022-2023 Wind Ensemble Concerto Competition and was named the 2023 Presser Scholar. Delia enjoys working with other students and is currently the section coach for the All University Orchestra flute section and has coached the non-major flute ensemble “Flutonium”. Apart from flute, Delia is an avid reader who dabbles in writing and enjoys learning about music history. She was a major contributor for Interlochen Public Radio’s sixth season of Kids Commute and has written for the Carnegie Mellon School of Music’s program notes team. She can also regularly be found caring for houseplants and hiking on the weekends.

Savor a recital of Mendelssohn, Smetana, and Martin by Trio Céleste in Chamber Music | OC’s intimate, state-of-the-art concert hall. Artists in residence at UC Irvine from 2013-19, Trio Céleste are a dynamic ensemble whose performances have garnered critical acclaim in the US and abroad.

Neave Trio, a well-known touring ensemble, that has visited Opus before, is now back on popular request. This time they will perform a program of pieces by Gabriela Lena Frank; Four Folk Songs, Frank Martin; Piano Trio of Irish Folk Songs and Bedrich Smetana; Piano Trio in G minor, among others. Their name ’Neave’ is actually a Gaelic name meaning ‘bright’ and ‘radiant,’ both of which certainly apply to this trio's music making. We are very much looking forward to another chance to host this outstanding piano-violin-cello trio.

A group of strangers meet at the location of his murder to reminisce on his life with humorous and moving anecdotes. The play is set in December of 1980 when the songs of his era took on unfortunate new meanings.
