Led by Artistic Partner Mei-Ann Chen and featuring violinist Laura Frautschi, ROCO In Concert: Fragrant Memories explores remembrance, resilience, and sonic storytelling through evocative reimaginings and new works on Saturday, November 1, 5:00 p.m. at The Church of St. John the Divine. The program includes the world premieres of John Wineglass’ Sacred Ground (based on the Houston community of Freedmen’s Town) and Anthony DiLorenzo’s arrangements of J.S. Bach’s iconic Toccata and Fugue in D minor and Maurice Ravel’s La Valse. Completing the program are Juan Pablo Contreras’ “Himno a la Mujer” from his violin concerto La Minerva, David T. Little’s Haunted Topography, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 10, constructed by Barry Cooper.

Drawing on the complicated mythologies of the surrealist writer William S. Burroughs (Naked Lunch), Black Lodge uses dance, industrial rock, classical string quartet, and opera to take viewers through a Lynchian psychological escape room. 

Set in a nightmarish Bardo, a place between death and rebirth, a tormented writer faces down demons of his own making. Forced to confront the darkest moment in his life, he mines fractured and repressed memories for a way out. A woman is at the center of all the writer’s afterlife encounters. She is the subject of his life’s greatest regret, and she materializes everywhere in this Otherworld. The writer cannot detach any thoughts of his life from her.

Little’s Soldier Songs combines classical music and heavy metal in a theatrical cantata that follows the life of a soldier in three phases: Youth, Warrior, and Elder. The highly-charged monodrama, with its driving music and unflinching libretto, offers a compelling and honest description of the psychological impact of war. Renowned baritone David Adam Moore stars in this powerful and haunting piece.

THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional palettes. Each composer has been asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020. This three-day residency at the Barge offers a curated survey divided into three thematic programs, featuring 17 works heard for the first time in NYC and world premieres by Tyshawn Sorey, Texu Kim, Layale Chaker, Analia Llugdar, and Aaron Jay Kernis. Works by Josquin des Prez and J.S. Bach offer a musical grounding through the centuries.
