Korean-born Canadian cellist Eric Han made his concerto debut with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra at the age of 14. Following his debut, he had many engagements with Toronto Sinfonietta, Toronto Chamber Players and Boston’s Symphony by the Sea. As a guest artist and Artist in Residence, Han has participated at various festivals including the Moritzburg Festival, La Jolla SummerFest, Music@Menlo and Sarasota Music Festival, among others. Han studied with David Hetherington at the Glenn Gould School, and holds a Bachelor of Music from the Colburn School of Music under the tutelage of Ronald Leonard. Han is a recent graduate of the Curtis Institute of Music, where he studied with Peter Wiley and Carter Brey. Han plays on a cello made by Frank Ravatin on generous loan to him by the Maestro Foundation. Eric is 4th chair cellist with the Seattle Symphony Orchestra since 2013.

The Florida Orchestra welcomes back former resident conductor Thomas Wilkins to conduct Mozart’s sunny and lyrical Violin Concerto No. 4, featuring Vadim Gluzman. The beloved maestro also will take audiences to the famous Fountains of Rome by Respighi and On the Waterfront Symphonic Suite by Leonard Bernstein. Kicking off the concert is Sinfonia (for Orbiting Spheres), which composer Missy Mazzoli describes as “music in the shape of a solar system, a collection of rococo loops that twist around each other within a larger orbit.”

The main attraction for our Holiday concert is Vivaldi’s “Gloria”. From the genre of cantata-mass, this hybrid form is set for solo voices, choir, and orchestra. Textural contrast, expressive variety, and emotion arise from the words of the mass. The concert is complete with a performance of Respighi’s “Adoration of the Magi” (a musical depiction of the nativity scene, based upon the painting by Leonardo Da Vinci) and favorite holiday classics, along with a sing-along! The concert will conclude with Antonín Dvořák's "Serenade for Strings in E major, Op. 22," a work celebrated for its rich Czech lyricism, lush textures, and dazzling virtuosity.

Singing Strings: Music of Respighi, Bologne, and Dvořák

Past and present intertwine as Kazem Abdullah, one of the most exciting American conductors on the scene today, makes his SMF conducting debut with a program filled with brilliant orchestral color. Art and music meld in Ottorino Respighi’s enchanting Botticelli Triptych, a marvelous musical rendering of three iconic paintings by the Renaissance artist. Longtime SMF faculty cellist Desmond Hoebig is featured in Tchaikovsky’s elegant “Rococo” Variations, the Russian composer’s loving homage to Mozart. The concert concludes with Mozart’s final symphony, “Jupiter”, a masterpiece of impeccable clarity and compositional virtuosity.
