The majesty and grandeur of brass instruments has been celebrated since the Renaissance. Not just for their power, either. They’re thrilling when played softly, too, and indeed the title of Giovanni Gabrieli’s piece means ‘Quiet and Loud Sonata’ because it was one of the first pieces to specify the level of volume with which the instruments should be played.

Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.”

The program opens with Giovanni Gabrieli’s Canzona per sonare No. 2, featuring The Phoenix Symphony Brass Section, which will surround the audience in glorious, majestic brass music. Handel’s celebratory, upbeat, and vibrant Royal Fireworks Music under the baton of guest conductor Carlos Izcaray is next. Gabriela Lena Frank, Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra whose work was featured in the inaugural season of REVERB, mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk musical traditions with Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout. The program finishes with Prokofiev’s first symphony, a landmark neo-classical work inspired by a vision of a Haydn as a contemporary composer.

The Early Baroque era of Italian music brought a zenith of dramatic and technical display in the hands of new generations of virtuoso singers and instrumentalists. Composers and performers united in their course of revealing new depths of expression, color, and theatrical effects through music that is immediately thrilling and enthralling.  From the delicate and spatial interplay of three violins in Marini’s Sonata in Ecco to the full-throated and lovelorn dramatic vocal works of Monteverdi — including two epic narratives from his Madrigals of Love and War — this is a program that moves from mystery to magic and from the sacred to the secular.  Headliner works are Isabella Leonarda’s entrancing Sonata XII, Monteverdi’s Magnificat a 6 from the Vespers of 1610, and the same composer’s powerfully arresting setting of Torquato Tasso’s Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. An ensemble of evocative ABS artists brings this passionate music to light in a program featuring vocal and violinistic fireworks.

Music is one of humanity’s most treasured and enduring experiences combining physical science and human emotional response. This concert presentation is split into two parts. The first, shorter segment features Music Director <a>Michael Christie</a>, guest artists <a>Jiji Kim</a>, <a>James Grinta</a>, and an expert in the field of physics to demonstrate how sound is created and becomes a visceral emotional response. The second segment, the concert portion of the presentation, features works that highlight composers’ use of distance, combinations of sounds and instruments to touch our hearts and souls. Choose to attend one or both presentations and enjoy a fascinating look into how energy becomes sound and sound becomes memories and emotions.
The first portion of the presentation will commence at 6:30pm and last approximately 40 minutes followed by a 20 minute intermission. The concert portion of the event will commence at 7:30pm and last approximately 70 minutes.
An additional work will be presented during the first portion of the event, Derek Bermel’s Ritornello for Electric Guitar and Strings (2011).

Johannes Brahms' passionate *Symphony No. 1* firmly established the Romantic master as a worthy successor to Beethoven. Brahms' *Hungarian Dance No. 5*, one of classical music's greatest hits, provides a rousing conclusion.

After winning the ARD competition in 2014 and receiving the Crédit Suisse Young Artist Award in 2016, Simone Rubino has never stopped attracting enthusiastic audiences both as a soloist with the likes of the Vienna Philharmonic and Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, under such conductors as Zubin Mehta, Manfred Honeck, and Tan Dun. Rubino has transported percussion from the periphery to the center of the classical, contemporary, and even baroque scene, making him a regular guest at prestigious festivals worldwide.
