Representatives of Italian church music will gather in Mainz Cathedral for the 9th Symphony Concert. Giovanni Gabrieli, born in 1554, was a Venetian church musician at St. Mark's Basilica in Venice and one of the most important musicians of the Venetian School at the transition from the Renaissance to the Baroque. His avant-garde work attracted musicians from all over Europe to Venice. His most famous student was the German Heinrich Schütz. He made early use of the basso continuo in his works, and his Sonata pian' e forte contains some of the earliest dynamic markings, i.e. markings for the specific use of volume in music. The works of the German Baroque, which culminated in the music of J.S. Bach, are based on this tradition, the roots of which lie in this very Venetian school under Giovanni Gabrieli.

The majesty and grandeur of brass instruments has been celebrated since the Renaissance. Not just for their power, either. They’re thrilling when played softly, too, and indeed the title of Giovanni Gabrieli’s piece means ‘Quiet and Loud Sonata’ because it was one of the first pieces to specify the level of volume with which the instruments should be played.

Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.”

Gabriela Lena Frank, Composer-in-Residence with the Philadelphia Orchestra whose work was featured in the inaugural season of REVERB, mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk musical traditions with Leyendas: An Andean Walkabout. The program finishes with Prokofiev’s first symphony, a landmark neo-classical work inspired by a vision of a Haydn as a contemporary composer.

The Early Baroque era of Italian music brought a zenith of dramatic and technical display in the hands of new generations of virtuoso singers and instrumentalists. Composers and performers united in their course of revealing new depths of expression, color, and theatrical effects through music that is immediately thrilling and enthralling.  From the delicate and spatial interplay of three violins in Marini’s Sonata in Ecco to the full-throated and lovelorn dramatic vocal works of Monteverdi — including two epic narratives from his Madrigals of Love and War — this is a program that moves from mystery to magic and from the sacred to the secular.  Headliner works are Isabella Leonarda’s entrancing Sonata XII, Monteverdi’s Magnificat a 6 from the Vespers of 1610, and the same composer’s powerfully arresting setting of Torquato Tasso’s Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda. An ensemble of evocative ABS artists brings this passionate music to light in a program featuring vocal and violinistic fireworks.

Music is one of humanity’s most treasured and enduring experiences combining physical science and human emotional response. This concert presentation is split into two parts. The first, shorter segment features Music Director <a>Michael Christie</a>, guest artists <a>Jiji Kim</a>, <a>James Grinta</a>, and an expert in the field of physics to demonstrate how sound is created and becomes a visceral emotional response. The second segment, the concert portion of the presentation, features works that highlight composers’ use of distance, combinations of sounds and instruments to touch our hearts and souls. Choose to attend one or both presentations and enjoy a fascinating look into how energy becomes sound and sound becomes memories and emotions.

The unique architecture of the celebrated St Mark's Basilica in Venice came to be a prime factor in the emergence of a very particular phenomenon in music history, one centred on a group of composers known collectively as the Venetian School. In the late 16th century and early 17th the Basilica's interior, with its vast expanses of space, multiple choir lofts, echoing vaults and seemingly endless sound delay, gave rise to a highly creative approach to the relationship between music and physical space. Singers and instrumentalists were distributed in groups throughout the interior, singing and playing sometimes together but very often in opposition (antiphony), and at varying distances from the organ, which was at the centre of the musical action. The Venetian polychoral style, as it is known, reached its culmination in the works of composer-organist Giovanni Gabrieli.

Harpsichordist and conductor Francesco Corti leads a festive programme that unites three composers at the heart of the Venetian school and its international influence: Gabrieli, Schütz and Monteverdi.

Giovanni Gabrieli was the defining figure of the Venetian polychoral tradition, writing magnificent works for spatially-separated vocal and instrumental choirs that exploited the immense architecture of St Mark’s. His student, Heinrich Schütz, fused the grandeur and theatricality of this Venetian style with the Lutheran intimacy and theological intensity of his native Germany. And Monteverdi, who became maestro di cappella at St Mark’s not long after Gabrieli’s death, brought his unique sense of drama and emotional immediacy to Venice’s ceremonial musical tradition.

Taking the Christmas Eve services as our guide, this programme weaves together the psalms and grand Magnificat of Vespers with the Mass and instrumental sonatas for Midnight Mass. This music is the raison d’être of the Monteverdi Choir, and together with the specialist period-instrument players of the English Baroque Soloists, they will recreate the glorious sound-world of a seventeenth-century Venetian Christmas.
