The famous Caprice No. 24 by the devilish violinist Paganini is considered one of the most difficult pieces for solo violin. Sergei Rachmaninov took the theme of the Caprice and composed devilishly difficult variations for piano and orchestra. It's a good thing that a pianistic devil of a guy, the young French pianist Alexandre Kantorov, is taking to the keys for this piece. For his suite "Scheherazade", Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was inspired by the fairy tales with which the wise Scheherazade appeases the vengeful Sultan in One Thousand and One Nights. The storyteller, played by the solo violin, is accompanied on her journey through the Arabian fairy tale world by Tugan Sokhiev at the conductor's desk and moderator Malte Arkona.

Within just a few years, the French pianist Alexandre Kantorow has developed into one of the most exciting artistic personalities of the younger generation. Since his debut with the Munich Philharmonic in November 2021, he has had a remarkable career; now he is returning with the virtuoso "Paganini Rhapsody" by Sergei Rachmaninov. Kantorow's technical skills are intimidating even for some of his colleagues. This makes him the ideal soloist for this work, the technical demands of which even made the piano virtuoso Rachmaninov's hands flutter before each performance. A magnificent polonaise opens the third act of Tchaikovsky's opera "Eugene Onegin" and, in passing, provides the musical surface portrait of the Russian aristocracy in the 19th century. In his suite "Scheherazade", Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov wanders through the oriental fairy-tale world of "From a Thousand and One Nights". Masterfully orchestrated, it is not only a fantastic narrative cast in sound, but also a showpiece for the orchestra and its soloists.

Rachmaninoff, a virtuoso pianist himself, held nothing back when composing for his instrument; Simon Trpčeski is ideally suited for the challenge of Rachmaninoff’s demanding yet romantic First Piano Concerto. In mythology, Orpheus crossed paths with the god of bees — composer Dobrinka Tabakova wove their buzzing sounds into her dramatic Orpheus’ Comet, which also includes references to Monteverdi’s opera L’Orfeo. Finally, Music Director Ken-David Masur conducts Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade, a beguiling suite about a clever woman who weaves adventure-filled stories to save her own life over the course of 1,001 nights.

In our season of storytelling our final symphonic concert brings some of the greatest music storytelling ever — Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov’s epic work, Scheherazade. Four of the tales from the celebrated Arabian Nights are brilliantly recast in music of unmatched color and power. As the story goes, furious at his wife’s infidelity, the Sultan decides to take a new wife every day, only to have her killed the next morning. He did not reckon coming across the will of the beautiful Scheherazade.

Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee" stands as one of the most recognizable and beloved orchestral interludes in the classical repertoire. Originally composed as part of his opera "The Tale of Tsar Saltan," this brief yet intricate orchestral piece has transcended its operatic origins to become a standalone concert favorite.

"Flight of the Bumblebee" is a musical portrayal of the incessant buzzing and darting flight of a bumblebee, characterized by its rapid tempo and virtuosic passages. Rimsky-Korsakov masterfully captures the agility and energy of the insect through the use of rapid chromatic runs and fluttering melodies, which dart and weave through the orchestral texture with remarkable agility.

A ruthless sultan, his beautiful young wife, and 1001 nights of stories from beyond the imagination. That was the inspiration behind Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade: a glittering, wide-screen orchestral epic, and the climax of a concert that opens with a postcard from sunny Italy and then the deliciously tuneful piano concerto that Shostakovich wrote as a present for his teenage son. It’s a joyous showcase for two real rising stars: conductor Paolo Bortolameolli and the award-winning Elisabeth Brauss.

Acclaimed pianist Vladimir Feltsman returns after performing a livestream concert with the Symphony in 2021 to deliver before a live audience the exhilarating passion and power contained in Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor. Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade weaves an entrancing, musical spell that has proven worthy of the hypnotic power of its literary namesake. Audiences will be treated to a world premiere composition by Ellen Taaffe Zwilich commissioned for the Palm Beach Symphony by Ambassador Bonnie McElveen-Hunter in honor of Gil Maurer

Though the tales of the 1001 Nights have been told many times, it was probably Sir R. F. Burton’s 1885 translation of the Arabian Knights which made these exotic stories famous worldwide, inspiring numerous artists and
composers. Soprano Christie Weber performs Maurice Ravel’s picturesque Shéhérazade songs, paired with Rimsky- Korsakov’s colorful and evocative symphonic suite of scenes from the sweeping Middle Eastern epic.

Russian maestro Vasily Petrenko became the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra’s Music Director in the 2021-22 season, after leaving his role as Chief Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra. He will conclude his term as Chief Conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) in July 2021, closing a fifteen-year period during which he has drawn critical acclaim, global recognition and significantly increased audiences across the region.

Violinist Jorge Ávila won attention as an outstanding young violinist and has performed as a soloist, recitalist, concertmaster, and chamber musician throughout the world. A recipient of numerous awards and honors, Jorge received his resident status in the United States under the “Extraordinary Talent” category, and was awarded first prize in the Mu Phi Epsilon International Music Competition in 2001.
