The “Mass for Troubled Times” captures both the solemnity and triumph of the human spirit through its majestic melodies and profound religious expression. Known for its dramatic intensity, rich orchestration, and intricate vocal writing and blacklisted by the Nazi regime a month after its premiere, hear Hindemith’s robust symphony from his opera Mathis der Maler. The program opens with the west coast premiere of a new work commissioned by the Taki-Alsop Conducting Fellowship, written by Ukrainian composer Iryna Aleksiychuk.

The constitution’s preamble begins with the words “We the people,” a term which over the centuries has taken on a life of its own. In the context of our concert, entitled Composers Without Borders – The Ties That Bind Us, we focus on the unity of humankind, not individual governments, whether open and honest or repressive and evil. There are countless common threads present in people from all over the globe. The desire and ability to express oneself through music is one which cannot be suppressed by leaders of countries. Music unifies and uplifts all people. Our concert highlights the unending compositional creativity of mankind despite the complicated interrelationships of the countries represented.

Composed during a tumultuous period in his life, the great Romantic composer Robert Schumann’s Second Symphony is a musical journey, as he called it, “of many joys and sorrows.” Principal Guest Conductor Marin Alsop leads this beautiful masterwork, on a program with Rachmaninoff’s blazing Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, performed by a pianist of “enchanting, sensitive lyricism” (The Jerusalem Post).
