Paul Jacobs, “a virtuoso of dazzling technical acumen” (The New York Times), performs Barber’s Toccata festiva, an exuberant showcase for organ containing echoes of J.S. Bach.

In our season of storytelling our final symphonic concert brings some of the greatest music storytelling ever — Nicolai Rimsky Korsakov’s epic work, Scheherazade. Four of the tales from the celebrated Arabian Nights are brilliantly recast in music of unmatched color and power. As the story goes, furious at his wife’s infidelity, the Sultan decides to take a new wife every day, only to have her killed the next morning. He did not reckon coming across the will of the beautiful Scheherazade.

Prepare to be transported to enchanting realms of romance and legend in this captivating finale to the 2023-24 Classics Series. The journey begins with the Chevalier’s evocative melodies from L’amant anonyme (The Anonymous Lover), the only surviving opera by Joseph Bologne. You are then invited to take a tragic tour of the underworld in Matthew Aucoin’s Eurydice Suite, born of his surreal and heartbreaking opera, and the concert reaches its magical conclusion with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade. Immerse yourself in the sensory pleasure of the orchestra’s sound and let the imaginative melodies take you away as they animate the tales from The One Thousand and One Nights.

Celebrate the opening of the Conrad Prebys 2024 Summer Season at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park with the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, conductor Gemma New and pianist Olga Kern. Russian Reveries

West Valley Symphony

Who doesn’t love the story of 1,001 Arabian Nights? In Scheherazade, Russian composer Rimsky-Korsakov used the full might of the symphony orchestra to retell a few of those tales. Heavy brass portray the sultan while a violin solo spins out the beginning of each of Scheherazade’s tales. Balancing the program is another of music’s most famous tales, Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring, a ferocious story of sacrifice and rebirth where the orchestra and dancers share the stage.

Joyce Yang dazzles in Prokofiev’s sparkling 3rd Piano Concerto, a piece with the one of the most brilliant finishes of any work in the genre. Anna Clyne’s Masquerade conjures images of a chaotic revelry. Conductor Valentina Peleggi makes her ISO debut and transports us into a Middle Eastern fairy tale with Rimsky-Korsakov’s exotic Scheherazade.

Join us for an unforgettable evening as the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of the esteemed conductor Jader Bignamini, presents a captivating program featuring the works of Maurice Ravel and Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The highlight of the concert will be the performance of Ravel's Piano Concertos, with the virtuosic French pianist Bertrand Chamayou taking center stage. These concerts, set to take place from Friday, May 16, to Sunday, May 18, 2025, at the iconic Orchestra Hall, promise to be a celebration of orchestral color, pianistic virtuosity, and the influence of jazz.

The program includes Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin," "G Major Concerto," and the "Concerto for the Left Hand," alongside Rimsky-Korsakov's vibrant "Capriccio espagnol." Bertrand Chamayou, known for his masterful interpretations and extensive repertoire, brings his big technique and artistic approach to Ravel's challenging concertos. His performances are celebrated for their assurance, imagination, and remarkable consistency, making him a favorite among audiences worldwide.
