For over two centuries, Gioachino Rossini has been one of the most celebrated opera composers, and it might even have been the case if he had written nothing but Il barbiere di Siviglia. Both its genesis and premiere were connected with all kinds of twists and turns, which accompany many a play and opera. The piece had to be completed hastily, rehearsed and staged even more hastily; it was a setting of a literary work that had been used several times; the premiere was poorly received and affected by scandal, etc. In hindsight and knowing the fates of other creations, such circumstances would seem to be the best prerequisite for future success. Four years after the opera’s world premiere, in 1816 at the Teatro Argentino in Rome, Il barbiere di Siviglia was first presented, in German translation, at the Estates Theatre in Prague, which in 1825 staged the piece in Czech, owing mainly to the composer and conductor František Škroup (known primarily for creating the melody of the Czech national anthem), who would later on also give Czech premieres of operas by Wagner and others. The Provisional Theatre included Il barbiere di Siviglia in its repertoire during its very first season. Later on the opera was also undertaken by the National Theatre, which to date has adapted it in more than ten productions.

The Orchestra of St. Luke’s returns to close out the summer season led by the dynamic Xian Zhang. This program reunites the orchestra with world-renowned violinist Gil Shaham, a long-time Caramoor favorite whose numerous appearances here dates back to 1994. Fueled by curiosity, attraction, and cultural collision, the opera centers on the encounter between Selim, a Turkish traveler, and Fiorilla, a free-spirited Italian woman, whose mutual fascination ignites a whirlwind of romantic confusion and comic chaos. Beneath the laughter, the opera examines cultural and gender divides, and the tension between personal desire and social expectation. Rossini’s music drives the comedy with restless energy and quick turns of perspective, using rapid-fire ensembles and abrupt changes of direction to pull the audience into a world where flirtation becomes strategy, identity is constantly negotiated, and no one is quite as settled as they pretend to be. Il barbiere di Siviglia by Gioachino Rossini returns to the Cavea del Teatro, the evocative open-air theater located right on the roof of the Maggio. The opera is conducted by the young maestro Riccardo Bisatti, with the now “traditional” staging by Damiano Michieletto. Twenty-one years after its first production, which took place in July 2005 at the Roman Theatre of Fiesole - and thus originally conceived and designed for an open space, just like the Cavea del Maggio - it reaches its eleventh staging within the Theater’s seasons. Despite its age, it retains intact all the freshness, originality, and modernity that have made it over time an “evergreen” production, highly appreciated by the Maggio. Michieletto’s production features an almost total absence of real sets and focuses all attention on comic gags and carefully crafted gestures. It begins as a train journey, announced over a loudspeaker - an cheerful way of traveling “through” Rossini’s opera, evoking places and situations through imagination. Evocative and eccentric costumes and bright colors turn the characters into caricatures, almost as if they were figures from commedia dell’arte: Don Basilio is green, with long, greasy hair and a hooked nose, entirely green with envy like a snake (or rather, a basilisk); Figaro has hair that suggests fox-like ears and a mustache, while Don Bartolo, dressed all in white, resembles a pot-bellied bulldog who jealously watches Rosina, dressed in red like her lover Lindoro.

The story of Cinderella, her evil stepsisters, her malign stepfather and her eternal quest for happiness. It all begins with hassles and endless coloratura. But then: Prince Charming arrives! The legendary, effervescent production by Jean-Pierre Ponnelle is today a chapter of operatic history: a priceless legacy.

Her breakthrough came at the latest with numerous prizes at the Sarasate, Paganini and Tchaikovsky competitions, which quickly took her to the world's most important stages as a soloist. As a soloist and chamber musician, Yuki Manuela Janke also inspires as concertmaster of the most traditional orchestras. Her interpretation of Richard Strauss' "Heldenleben" in the Golden Hall in Vienna with the Staatskapelle Dresden and Christian Thielemann attracted particular attention.

So we're also going to spice it up a bit when we move out of the theater and concert halls and meet the audience. We're letting you experience the dilemmas, the dramas and all the fantastic things that opera can and should do. On the back of a truck, we'll go out onto the streets and alleys, squares and squares and tell all the great stories. With five singers, an actor and three musicians, you'll get The Barber in a different way; an hour of welcoming, family-friendly and accessible opera right where you least expect us.

This is a gripping operatic thriller of emotions, with which the then 21-year-old Gioacchino Rossini catapulted himself to the forefront of Italian composers from Venice in 1813: Amenaide is to obey her father's will and marry a man she does not love. In doing so, she contributes to ending the power struggle between two rival families in her hometown. Amenaide, in the meantime suspected of being a traitor and threatened with death, loves Tancredi, who returns to his hometown incognito, learns of the forced betrothal and kills his rival. But the trusting relationship with Amenaide is gone, Tancredi is desperate and wants to find death. Although an early work, TANCREDI with its lively melodies and resounding finales testifies to Rossini's musical inventiveness. It is above all the solo scenes in which the work builds up to its highlights. With the catchy cabaletta of the eponymous hero "Di tanti palpiti", the work contains a veritable opera hit, which in Italy effectively has the status of a folk song. The male main character Tancredi is in this case cast with a mezzo-soprano, a "trouser role" characteristic of the early 19th century. Musically, however, TANCREDI has much more to offer than this one big hit. Rossini developed new ways for the romantic Italian opera with his so-called "Rossini Code" also in terms of form - often a tempo d’attacco, an adagio, a tempo di mezzo and a cabaletta follow one another. The successful production of the Bregenz Festival from the year 2024, directed by Jan Philipp Gloger, is now being presented in Cologne. Jan Philipp Gloger, most recently in Cologne for the direction of EIN MASKENBALL, focuses his production on the love between two women who have little chance of self-fulfilment in a clan and macho world. The musical direction is held by George Petrou.

In his opera Rossini brought together a string of well-known “commedia dll’arte” characters of which he formed an irresistible comedy – full of intrigue and charade: the mercenary guardian Doctor Bartolo and his conniving henchman Basilio, his wealthy charge Rosina and her secret lover Lindoro (alias Count Almaviva) and finally the barber Figaro himself, who assists the young couple in the pursuit of their love against all odds. The opera’s world premiere in 1816 was accompanied by boos and catcalls – only to get firmly established in the world of opera shortly after. Rossini’s work by now has developed into one of the most popular and most frequently played operas world-wide.

While Syracuse is arming for war against the Sarazans, the King’s daughter Amenaide is charged with high treason for writing a letter to Solamir, leader of the Sarazans, professing her love. Just before her execution Tancredi, a knight banished from Syracuse, and Amenaide’s secret lover, returns, incognito. The letter was intended for him. Although he saves her from being executed, he starts doubting her fidelity. War with the Sarazans looms closer, and Tancredi’s to lead his people into the decisive battle.

The typically Rossinian rhythm and the changing drama, entirely at home in the operatic spectrum, offer the choir the opportunity to showcase its full talent.

In director Emilio Sagi’s flamenco-inspired production, sun-bleached buildings are the backdrop to colorful costumes as the characters’ plans for escape become more and more outrageous. Benjamin Manis returns to conduct this effervescent score.

In Rossini's masterful comedy, clothes make the man and nothing is as it seems. Not only does Cenerentola change from a mocked maid to a fairytale princess, the prince also swaps his unloved role for that of his servant - and the ambitious stepfamily is ultimately left empty-handed. Between breathtaking vocal acrobatics and virtuoso role-playing, a social satire for young and old unfolds in which only the sincerest heart can see through. He wants to marry the beautiful Rosina himself, for the money! Who can help? The barber - a hairdresser who knows all the tricks of the trade! They lie and cheat, they disguise themselves and trick the police, they escape on a ladder, there are sword fights and completely botched love arias... Rossini’s Petite Messe Solennelle  (Little solemn mass), written in 1863, is anything but little and solemn, set to fill the iconic QPAC Concert Hall with over 100 performers on stage. This is a glorious celebration of sacred music written towards the end of Rossini’s life, a work of profound beauty and exultant joy. 

Written for two pianos and harmonium, with four soloists and choir, our collaboration with The University of Queensland sees us joined by renowned organist Dr Graeme Morton and two virtuosic pianists –  Liam Viney and Mia Huang.

Perfect for seasoned concertgoers and newcomers, Rossini combines orchestral and choral textures, to create a work distinguished by its unashamed romanticism.

The Petite Messe solennelle stands as one of Gioachino Rossini’s most captivating late works. The title translates to a “little” solemn mass though this does not capture the monumental spirit of this work. Written in 1863, decades after his operatic triumphs had finished, the piece fuses Rossini’s unmistakable theatrical flair with profound sacred expression. Radiant choruses, meltingly lyrical solos and moments of intimate devotion unfold alongside flashes of wit and rhythmic brilliance, revealing a composer at once playful and deeply sincere. This performance features Rossini’s original 1863 scoring for two pianos and harmonium giving us a strikingly transparent and intimate sound world that places rhythmic vitality and vocal colour front and centre. The keyboard writing sparkles and surges with operatic energy, from the buoyant Gloria to the exhilarating double fugue of the Cum Sancto Spiritu, while the harmonium lends warmth and a devotional glow to contemplative movements such as the luminous O salutaris hostia and the transcendent Agnus Dei. UQ School of Music pianists Liam Viney and Anna Grinberg join harmonium player Graeme Morton AM to realise this vibrant chamber score alongside the voices of the UQ Singers and UQ Chorale. Conducted by Richard Mills AO, and presented in collaboration with Opera Queensland in the QPAC Concert Hall, this performance brings together some of Queensland’s finest artists for an evening of choral splendour that is intimate, exuberant and profoundly moving.

Two prodigies, Mozart and Rossini, meet on this program, each of them writing brilliant music with almost unbelievable speed. Rossini's Italian Girl in Algiers (the whole opera!) was composed in less than a month and was a big hit. Its overture sets the scene for exotic locales, hilarity and dramatic love. Principal Clarinet Benjamin Lulich is our featured soloist in Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, some of the most sublime music ever written. When commissioned to write another symphony at a moment’s notice and “up to his eyeballs” in work, Mozart set to reworking his “Haffner” Serenade. The eventual result was this celebratory 35th Symphony, aka the Haffner Symphony, presented in this program. And alongside it, Mozart's 39th Symphony bubbles with dance-like rhythms and lightness.

His daughters don't give the visitor, disguised as a simple servant, a second glance. It's a good thing that Ramiro finds a sympathetic heart in the unloved stepsister Angelina, known as Cenerentola... Gioachino Rossini composed some of his most beautiful melodies for his turbulent musical theater version of the charming “Cinderella”. Jean-Pierre Ponnelle's legendary production, which has been enchanting audiences since 1974, is as effervescently cheerful as Rossini's light-hearted score.

Part of the Brisbane Bel Canto festival, La Cenerentola is set to the sparkling and exquisite music of Rossini and swaps pumpkin carriages and fairy godparents for an evening of magical music and theatrical mischief.

When an invitation to the Prince’s Ball arrives, the gentle and warm-hearted Angelina (Cinderella) is overlooked by her selfish stepsisters and father Don Magnifico. However, kindness can conjure an unpredictable magic; when Cinderella captures the heart of Prince Ramiro, it’s not the slipper that fits, but the heart that shines.

There are plenty of laughs, thanks to the antics of Magnifico and Dandini, a pair of scheming stepsisters, and a mix-up at the ball. Add some dazzling singing and you’ve got a night at the opera offering the rare and joyous conclusion that fairytales really can come true.

A sweeping Biblical epic rarely heard in the United States. This visually arresting production features Justin Hopkins (Bluebeard 2023 & Norma 2018) as Mosè and Ashley Milanese in her company debut as Elcia. Expect dramatic storms, plagues, and miracles, set to some of Rossini’s most powerful writing. It’s as if The Ten Commandments were an opera!

"Man only plays when he is in the full sense of the word a human being, and he is only fully a human being when he plays." These famous words come from Friedrich Schiller, and the program under the direction of our honorary conductor Christoph Eschenbach inspires us to many musical flourishes – with our wind players repeatedly shining through with their playful spirit. And the instrumental pieces hit the mark perfectly, for example in the overture from Weber's opera "Der Freischütz" from 1821: Here, bullets cursed by demonic powers decide the love life of a young hunter in a competition – but "the whole thing ends joyfully," as the composer noted. Afterwards, together with our solo horn player Andreas Kreuzhuber, we perform a fascinating concerto by Reinhold Glière: Although this virtuoso piece was composed in 1950, it is entirely imbued with a romantic spirit.

Step into the magic of Rossini’s Cinderella in this delightful semi-staged production brimming with humor, charm, and enchanting melodies. Angelina—mistreated by her stepfather Don Magnifico and his scheming daughters—dares to dream of a brighter future. With help from Prince Ramiro’s clever valet and a sparkling twist involving a pair of bracelets, Angelina must navigate royal intrigue to capture the prince’s heart. Designed for children in PreK through 5th grade, these fun and interactive events invite children to sing, act, and follow along with our energetic Teaching Artists. “I don’t believe in the right to work; I prefer to believe that the greatest right of man is to do nothing,“ said Rossini. Angelina, his Cinderella, is far from that – she performs slave labour in her bankrupt stepfather’s family. How a prince, for whom the bank account and an army of servants work, gets her out of this precarious situation is a world-famous fairy tale from Charles Perrault to Disney. Rossini tells the story of the power of honest feelings to survive without the well-known miraculous elements, but there is one great miracle: love at first sight. Not at the ball, but when the prince, as a servant, inspects the potential brides in advance. Surrounding this is the madness of exalted dreams of ascent and terrible scenarios of descent, which drives Rossini’s characters forward just as much as the insane energy of his music. The young mezzo-soprano Itzeli del Rosario, who is a member of the Stuttgart ensemble since this season, makes her debut in the title role of Cinderella.

Italian vocal artistry enjoys a reputation like no other—and thanks to Franco Vassallo, audiences at the Rudolfinum will have the chance to experience it first-hand. The celebrated baritone, known for iconic roles such as Figaro and Falstaff, will perform arias from his signature repertoire. But the evening won’t be devoted to opera alone: he will also present songs by Ralph Vaughan Williams, inspired by the rugged beauty of the Scottish landscape.

To top it all off, the La Crosse Youth Symphony joins the LSO, side-by-side, for Rossini's sparking overture to The Barber of Seville -- used to wonderful effect in the great 1979 Midwestern coming-of-age classic comedy, Breaking Away.

One must imagine Gioacchino Rossini as a hard-working man. In 1810, at just 18 years old, he wrote his first opera. By the age of 20, he was considered Italy's most sought-after opera composer; by his 22nd birthday, he had written 13 operas and was known far beyond Italy's borders. "The Barber of Seville" remains his undisputed masterpiece and rightly belongs to the core operatic repertoire.

This spring’s double bill pairs two contrasting one-act operas that explore themes of familial obligation and personal sacrifice. Rossini’s La Cambiale di Matrimonio (The Marriage Contract) is a fast-moving farce about an arranged marriage gone awry, featuring spirited ensembles and the youthful energy of Rossini’s earliest operatic style. Puccini’s Suor Angelica, part of his Il trittico trilogy, tells the poignant story of a noblewoman forced into a convent, whose encounter with her estranged aunt leads to a heartrending climax. Sung in Italian with English surtitles, these one-act operas offer a night of contrasting emotions, memorable characters, and compelling scores.
