With its brick-red façade, a gleaming white entrance area and a magnificent red and gold auditorium, the venue for this year’s European Concert, Bari’s Teatro Petruzzelli, is an architectural jewel. Under the direction of Riccardo Muti, the Berliner Philharmoniker will present a mixed programme of Italian and German music. Rossini’s rousing William Tell Overture and the atmospheric ballet music from Verdi’s opera The Sicilian Vespers exude Italianità. Completing the programme, the dusky mixture of yearning and consolation in Brahms’ Second Symphony make the work a seminal example of late German Romanticism.

The sensational Weimar premiere of Franz Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 was a long time in the making. Begun during Liszt's virtuoso period and only completed when he had already made a name for himself as a composer of symphonic poems, both are noticeable in the music: the youthful spirit of the piano virtuoso and a sophisticated symphonic orchestral part. The Italian-Croatian pianist Martina Filjak also brings a southern flair, as does the Italian conductor Fabrizio Carminati.

Where love is concerned, too much is not even enough. Rosina is young, clever, and wealthy, but her greedy guardian desires her and her fortune for himself. Using her wits to outsmart him and find her true love, she enlists Figaro, the mischievous and well-connected local barber, who has more than a few tricks up his sleeve. Plans go awry (resulting in several close shaves) against the backdrop of Gioachino Rossini’s iconic score as romance and a little old-fashioned trickery combine in one of the best-loved comedies of all time.

Mozart's only clarinet concerto is one of his late works and is always associated with his enthusiasm for the warm sound of the clarinet and its adaptability. He composed the concerto for his friend Anton Stadler, through whom he was well informed about the possibilities and peculiarities of the instrument. The melodies cover the entire possible sound spectrum, even in the lower registers. To this day, it is a calling card and one of the highlights in the repertoire of clarinet literature.

Inbal Segev, renowned for her profound interpretations of modern cello compositions, will perform Mark Adamo’s Last Year. This piece offers a fresh, cinematic reimagining of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, blending familiar themes with contemporary sensibilities to create a unique auditory experience.

The program culminates with Piotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 5, a work celebrated for its emotional depth and sweeping melodies. Cristina Villalobos, voice - Second Year Master's Recital

Rossini knew his means of action, and although there is a long way from the action overture to the opera Wilhelm Tell to his ecclesiastical work Stabat Mater, the works have in common that Rossini knew what he was doing; was it dramatic, heartfelt, cheerful - he could play on all keys. The Stabat Mater is a psalm text from the Middle Ages that tells of Mary's pain as she witnesses her son's crucifixion, and many have set it to music. Rossini is not the only composer to have brought the operatic style into the church, and Rossini's few church musical works are profoundly religious in the language he mastered. Emotional and virtuosic music to the words Grundtvig translated: "Only the tender mother's heart can hold a mother's pain" - the essence of the Stabat Mater.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the death of legendary guitarist Paco de Lucía. This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. The works of the 3rd Chamber Concerto are all about love and solidarity in word and sound: When Johannes Brahms set about composing the “Two Songs”, it was his close friendship with his long-time companion, the violinist Joseph Joachim. Brahms wanted to create a musical monument to his love and composed the “Spiritual Lullaby” based on a text by Emanuel Geibel for his wedding, but withdrew the composition and revised it. The composer then published both songs together with “Quenched Longing” based on a text by Friedrich Rückert to mark another happy event: the baptism of his godchild, Joseph Joachim’s son. In both compositions, one can hear the unbridled joy of life, born of love. Leoš Janáček's (late) love for Kamilla Stösslová, who was almost 40 years younger than him, was, however, under a completely different, much worse star. In his second string quartet, with the programmatic nickname "Intimate Letters", his feelings for the young woman are omnipresent. Just a year before his death, Janáček left behind the frivolous testimony of a great love: eruptive, provocative and passionate.

Embark on a thrilling musical odyssey as Music Director Emeritus Edvard Tchivzhel kicks off the evening with Rossini’s iconic Overture to William Tell, setting the stage for an exhilarating journey through the Spanish countryside with Rimsky-Korsakov’s vibrant Capriccio espagnol. We conclude the evening with the fourth symphony of Tchivzhel’s favorite composer: the great Russian romantic, Tchaikovsky.

Just as every new year has its January 1st, (almost) every opera has an overture: sometimes as a turbulent introduction to a comedy full of intrigue and passion, as in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's "Figaro", sometimes as a departure into an adventure fairy tale full of magic, as in Mikhail Glinka's "Ruslan and Ludmilla". The Duisburg Philharmonic's salon orchestra welcomes the year 2025 with a selection of overtures that is as varied as it is virtuoso, mixing lively sounds in three-quarter time. "Everything is a waltz" is not only the motto of Johann Strauss and his brother Josef, but also in Carl Maria von Weber's "Invitation to the Dance" from 1819 - the epitome of Biedermeier waltz bliss.
