Join the Confluence Chamber Orchestra for a mesmerizing journey back in time with "Meet Me in St. Louis," a special concert series celebrating the opening of the Missouri History Museum's new World’s Fair exhibit. This unique musical experience is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, April 27 and 28, 2024, at 2:30 pm, at the Missouri History Museum, located at 5700 Lindell Blvd., Forest Park, St. Louis, Missouri.

Dive into the rich history of the 1904 World's Fair as our orchestra members, having delved into the museum’s archives, bring to life the works performed by famous musicians of that era. This concert will not only feature a captivating selection of music but also offer attendees a walking tour of the fair’s most exciting music venues, all set against a stunning backdrop of iconic photographs from 1904.

The program includes a variety of pieces that echo the spirit of the World's Fair, including "The Star Spangled Banner" by Vanderstucken, "The Louisiana March" by Wagner, "Grand March from Tannhauser" by Sousa, "The Liberty Bell March," "The Streets of Cairo aka the Hoochee Coochee Dance" by Johnson, "Saint Louis Fire Company Anniversary Parade March" by Mills and Sterling, "Meet Me in St. Louis" by Joplin, "The Cascades" by Foster, "The Social Orchestra" by Bizet, "Intermezzo from Carmen," "Zampa Overture" by Herold, "Havanaise" by Saint-Saens, and the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini.

In modern times, "Cenerentola" evokes the wondrous realm of childhood. Yet, Rossini and Ferretti aimed to tone down the fairy tale elements in their opera. I’ve allowed for a touch of enchantment, transforming the guardian Alidoro into an all-knowing demigod puppeteer of our narrative.
Alidoro will initiate the tale by opening a grand scenic book marked "Cenerentola" and turn its pages through the unfolding scenes, conjuring brooms and carriages, even puppeteering the characters during the complex "Questo è un nodo avviluppato."
The costumes blur the lines between the 18th and 19th centuries, contrasting the old, embodied by Don Magnifico, with the new in Don Ramiro, leaping into Sun King-style extravagance with Dandini.
Working with Rossini always inspires me to craft a choreography that echoes the opera's musical structure. "Cenerentola" especially lends itself to playful and nearly surreal moments, like the brilliantly conceived end of the first act.

Figaro! Figaro! FIGARO! Based on a play called Le Barbier de Séville by French playwright Pierre Beaumarchais, this is the first of three plays about a character called Figaro. Silliness ensues through a tale of bribery, deception, disguise, and of course, true love when Figaro plays matchmaker for his former employer and assists Count Almaviva in winning the heart of Rosina and freeing her from her lecherous guardian, Dr Bartolo.

Lindy Hume's "bright hilarious production" (The Stranger) is an audience favorite with magnificently colorful sets and costumes. Combined with Gioachino Rossini's familiar and show-stopping tunes, this production is a treat for ears and eyes alike!

A veritable United Nations of cellists, the Galvin Quartet combines musicians from China, Brazil, South Korea, and the United States. The four members met at Northwestern University—taking their name from its jewel-box recital hall—and quickly captured attention with the silver medal at the 2021 Fischoff Chamber Music Competition and the top prize of the 2022 Victor Elmaleh Competition.

Take a romp through a world of high notes, hijinks, and hair-raising escapades with Rossini’s comedic masterpiece. The razor-sharp barber Figaro may be a master mischief-maker, but his favorite role is that of matchmaker. When he meets Count Almaviva, a dashing but naïve young nobleman, he promises to help Almaviva win the heart of the beautiful Rosina. A comedy of mistaken identities, cunning disguises, and laugh-out-loud antics ensues as the love-struck Almaviva attempts to outwit Rosina’s guardian.

Opera Holland Park is thrilled to present a new production of Gioachino Rossini's classic bel canto comedy, "The Barber of Seville," in June 2024. This sparkling comedy of intrigue, directed by Cecilia Stinton and conducted by Charlotte Corderoy, promises to be a highlight of the 2024 season, featuring a tale told with style and panache. The story follows the clever Figaro, the barber of Seville, as he becomes a puppet-master to ensure the young Count Almaviva wins the hand of Rosina, thwarting her wedding to the elderly Doctor Bartolo. The opera is renowned for its inventive arias and ensembles, offering a prequel to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro."

Paul Grant stars in the title role, with Elgan Llŷr Thomas as Almaviva and Heather Lowe as Rosina. The cast also includes Stephen Gadd as the conniving Doctor Bartolo and operatic superstar Janis Kelly making her company debut as Bartolo’s dust-allergic housekeeper, Berta. The production features the City of London Sinfonia and the Opera Holland Park Chorus, sung in Italian with English surtitles.

Performances are scheduled for multiple dates in June, starting from the 4th, with a special Young Artist’s performance on the 14th and a Discovery Matinee on the 16th, designed to welcome newcomers to opera in a relaxed environment. Ticket prices vary by seating area, with member discounts available, and INSPIRE tickets priced at £24, subject to availability.

Following her Royal Opera House debut in Andrea Chénier conducted by Antonio Pappano, mezzo-soprano Katia Ledoux joins pianist Anna Tilbrook for a recital presented by Opera Rara and the Temple Music Foundation. Taking place within the Inner Temple Parliament Chamber, the programme centres on the Parisian salons of the 19th century. Featuring newly-restored, rarely – if ever – performed songs by Donizetti from his years in Paris, the programme is completed with selections by Donizetti’s contemporaries. Including several songs composed by women, Ledoux and Tilbrook recreate the experience of a musical soirée.

This special event also celebrates the opening of Garsington Studios. The grand opening of the anniversary edition kicks off with the first of three concerts by this year’s Gstaad Conducting Academy: it offers a sneak peek into the creative process of young conductors, who, in their inaugural week, collaborate with a carefully chosen selection from the outstanding Gstaad Festival Orchestra. In a chamber orchestra setting, these accomplished conductors, who emerged victorious among approximately 200 competitors during the application phase, will delve into a varied repertoire featuring excerpts from Beethoven’s symphonies, overtures and the dazzling “Rococo Variations” by Peter Tchaikovsky. The latter will be brought to life by cellist Christopher Jepson, who has been a steadfast soloist with the Gstaad Festival Orchestra since its inception. Make sure not to miss the second part of this week on August 9th at the Saanen Church, where the captivating Menuhin’s Heritage Artist Lucienne Renaudin Vary will grace the stage with her trumpet.

The story unfolds with the clever and quick-witted Figaro, the barber extraordinaire, as he devises a plan to help his friend, Count Almaviva, win the heart of the beautiful Rosina. Through a series of hilarious disguises and mischievous schemes, they navigate the challenges posed by Rosina's overbearing guardian, Dr. Bartolo, who has his own matrimonial plans for her. This production, performed in English with a translation by Christopher Cowell, features a talented cast including Brenton Spiteri as Count Almaviva, Esme Bronwen-Smith as Rosina, and Patrick Alexander Keefe as Figaro, under the direction of John Wilkie and the baton of conductor Charlotte Corderoy.

Performances start at 6:30pm, featuring an extended dining interval, and conclude at approximately 9:45pm. General booking opens on April 11, with priority booking available for festival supporters. Members of the Dover Quartet join other Festival artists in the youthfully exuberant, Classical-era Sonata a quattro No. 1, written by Rossini when he was 12 years old, and Brahms’s sweeping String Sextet in G Major. Between the two works, the Festival presents the US premiere of a commissioned quintet by Finnish composer Outi Tarkiainen, who Gramophone notes “[fuses] jazz and classical idioms” and “draws on her Lapland roots and on the mystery and melancholy of life in the north.”
