Violinist Phillip Levy and pianist Tae Yeon Lim present a captivating program to include  Beethoven’s Sonata in D Major, Prokofiev’s lyrical Five Melodies and the epic Sonata for Violin and Piano by the Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu.

One of the most up-and-coming string quartet ensembles of our time—the Sonoro Quartet—will present itself at the Old Synagogue in Hagenow. The ensemble was formed in Ghent in 2019 and has since conquered not only international stages but also the hearts of audiences. In addition to works by Ludwig van Beethoven and Dmitri Shostakovich, the four musicians will also perform pieces by the relatively unknown Guillaume Lekeu and the contemporary composer Vinthya Perinpanathan.

The Devil’s Dream, a haunting piece by contemporary Irish composer Seán Doherty, draws us into this unique programme. The Sonoro Quartet’s native Belgium is represented by a new commission from one of Belgium’s leading composers, Annelies van Parys, inspired by the call of the Japanese Cicadas, and by a passionate outpouring from the short-lived but brilliant Lekeu. The concert culminates in Shostakovich’s String Quartet No 8 – written in just three days in the bombed ruins of Dresden, and dedicated to all victims of war.
