Ludwig van Beethoven’s influence was far-reaching and ushered in a movement of music that was picked up and further developed by composers like Wagner and Strauss. Beethoven’s one and only Violin Concerto has become an audience and performer favorite, filled with delicate melodies and stunning poignance. This concert opens with a premiere by Los Angeles-based composer Sarah Gibson, which the League of American Orchestras commissioned with the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation.

It’s as moving as it is powerful. In jazz-age America, Samuel Barber reinvented the romantic violin concerto with streamlined melodies and all-American verve; BBC New Generation Artist Geneva Lewis is the soloist today, and you’re about to hear why Musical America described her as “one to watch”. And Sarah Gibson takes handloom weaving as her inspiration: warp & weft is a vibrant, evocative modern celebration of female creativity, woven from sounds that glow in the ear. Thirty orchestras will take part in the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The unprecedented national consortium ensures that new works by women composers, each commissioned by the League, will be infused in orchestra seasons to come, with multiple performances throughout the country. The consortium’s initial six lead orchestra-composer pairings were previously announced, with more than eighty orchestras applying for the additional twenty-four spots.

Antonín Dvořák hid a very personal message in his cello concerto: a quote from his song "Leave me alone in my dreams". It was the favourite song of his sister-in-law and former childhood sweetheart Josefina Kounicová. While Dvořák was working on his cello concerto in the USA, he learned of her death. For Kian Soltani, this concerto full of painful longing and deep sadness is a very special piece, and he is convinced that "this work will accompany me for the rest of my life!" The German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, combines Dvořák's cello concerto with a new work by the American composer Sarah Gibson and with the orchestral version of Johannes Brahms' first piano quartet arranged by Arnold Schönberg. Otto Klemperer commissioned the Viennese, who was living in exile in the USA, to perform it. What Schönberg made of the original by the late romantic composer he greatly admired is often referred to as Brahms' "fifth symphony". Klemperer even said: "You don't even want to listen to the original quartet anymore, the arrangement sounds so beautiful."

The program features a suite of music from Bizet's L'Arlésienne – incidental music written to accompany a play about a young man torn between two lovers – and from Stravinksy's (in)famous ballet, Rite of Spring.
