In 2023, South Korean violin star Bomsori and dynamic German conductor Anja Bihlmaier made their BBC Proms debuts together with Bruch’s rich and seductive First Violin Concerto. Now, they reunite on the Hollywood Bowl stage to revisit this prized masterwork alongside Dvořák’s euphoric Eighth Symphony, known for its Bohemian folk-flavored melodies, dance-like finale, and contagious joy.

On July 14, 2024 the Piano Spheres family lost one of our own. Sarah Gibson was a brilliant pianist, a fierce composer, and an inspirational educator. She was half of the piano duo HOCKET who joined Piano Spheres as Core Artists in 2019, but she has been part of the Piano Spheres family for over a decade as both an Emerging Artist and Guest Artist. Sarah was a dedicated friend and colleague, an inspiring teacher, and a bright light in our tightly knit new music community. Antonín Dvořák hid a very personal message in his cello concerto: a quote from his song "Leave me alone in my dreams". It was the favourite song of his sister-in-law and former childhood sweetheart Josefina Kounicová. While Dvořák was working on his cello concerto in the USA, he learned of her death. For Kian Soltani, this concerto full of painful longing and deep sadness is a very special piece, and he is convinced that "this work will accompany me for the rest of my life!" The German conductor Anja Bihlmaier, chief conductor of the Residentie Orkest in The Hague, combines Dvořák's cello concerto with a new work by the American composer Sarah Gibson and with the orchestral version of Johannes Brahms' first piano quartet arranged by Arnold Schönberg. Otto Klemperer commissioned the Viennese, who was living in exile in the USA, to perform it. What Schönberg made of the original by the late romantic composer he greatly admired is often referred to as Brahms' "fifth symphony". Klemperer even said: "You don't even want to listen to the original quartet anymore, the arrangement sounds so beautiful."

‘I have spent my life trying to create a kind of cathedral of sound’. The words of Sofia Gubaidulina, one of the most significant living composers in the world. Her music, deeply spiritual and dramatic, forms the backbone of tonight’s celebration of International Women’s Day.

In this programme, Anja Bihlmaier makes her Manchester debut as the orchestra’s Principal Guest Conductor and explores this kaleidoscopic programme. There’s the UK premiere of Dreydl by the genre-defying Olga Neuwirth, alongside music from American Sarah Gibson – beyond the beyond is a BBC commission, written as Sarah’s joy at becoming a mother was tempered by a progressive and terminal illness. This performance will see the posthumous premiere of the work.

Each composer will write a 6–8 minute orchestral work and develop an educational or community-focused program presented in partnership with each orchestra.

Thirty orchestras will take part in the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation Orchestral Commissions Program. The unprecedented national consortium ensures that new works by women composers, each commissioned by the League, will be infused in orchestra seasons to come, with multiple performances throughout the country. The consortium’s initial six lead orchestra-composer pairings were previously announced, with more than eighty orchestras applying for the additional twenty-four spots.
