Plucked and Bowed: Trios for Harp and Strings

Tower Music is one of the oldest traditions at the Carmel Bach Festival. It began in 1936 with the Heralding Trombones, led by two generations of the Stewart Family, Chandler and son Gordon, and the trombone quartet opened every Festival in the early days. The Stewart Family performed well into the 1960’s until the Festival Orchestra brass section was asked to carry on the tradition as it does today. They played from the balcony window of the old Sunset Auditorium which opened onto the parking lot – the window is still there, overlooking the foyer – and from the Carmel Mission bell tower, thus earning the nickname “Tower Music.

This concert also showcases an array of extended techniques and additional instruments such as corks, rainsticks, ankle bells and more. Sandwiched between these pieces are RCM composer and cellist Him Chan’s Dialogues, each providing a miniature conversation between the instruments.

Composer/performer Jessie Montgomery is the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s Mead Composer-in-Residence and was recently named Musical America‘s 2023 Composer of the Year. TCP is thrilled to collaborate with Jessie in a dynamic program that equally showcases her excellence as visionary creator and virtuosic performer. Her first-ever work for percussion quartet draws a universe of sounds and characters out of a very compact percussion setup, and is paired with Lou Harrison’s Concerto for Violin with Percussion Orchestra–a tour de force that draws inspiration from the vibrant sounds of Javanese gamelan.

NEC's Piano Department marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Ives with two programs of his works for piano. 

Tonight's program - '“Ives Extended” - includes The Celestial Railroad, the Set of Five Take-Offs, works by Carl Ruggles, Lou Harrison and Henry Cowell, and rarely heard music for two pianos in quarter-tones by Ives, David Fulmer, and Georg Haas.

The evening's program explores the theme of duality, showcasing the collaborative spirit of music through an intriguing mix of compositions. Highlighting the event are two world premieres co-commissioned by Washington Performing Arts and the Taiwan Philharmonic: Kenji Bunch's "Transcontinental" and Ke-Chia Chen's "Witness Tree." Additionally, the program features Lou Harrison’s "Varied Trio" for Violin, Piano, and Percussion, drawing inspiration from traditional Indonesian Gamelan music, and Maurice Ravel’s Sonata No. 2 for Violin and Piano in G Major, op. 77, adding to the evening's diverse musical landscape.

This performance is part of Washington Performing Arts's The World in Our City initiative, promoting cross-cultural understanding and cultural diplomacy through the presentation of international visiting artists and globally inspired local programming. It is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, among other generous donors.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year with the Omaha Symphony in a captivating performance featuring pipa virtuoso Wu Man. This special event, titled "Wu Man & Beethoven 6," showcases the extraordinary talents of Wu Man in Lou Harrison’s pipa concerto, a piece written specifically for her by the renowned American composer.
