In 2007, NEA Jazz Master and Grammy Award-winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra for the purpose of keeping important jazz music traditions alive—such as riff-playing, spontaneous group improvisations, and collective New Orleans instrumental polyphony. Since that time, the orchestra has grown into one of the premier large ensembles in the world.

Since its inception, the JazzMN Orchestra has presented over eighty concerts in its main series. Additionally, they present performances at festivals around the Twin Cities. The music performed by the JazzMN Orchestra spans from the beginnings of jazz to contemporary works by today’s composers. Now in its twenty-fifth season, the JazzMN Orchestra has featured international jazz artists like Randy Brecker, Kurt Elling, Mike Stern, Arturo Sandoval, Gordon Goodwin, Phil Woods, Nicholas Payton and Paquito D’Rivera.

In this concert, featuring songs from their latest album, released in February 2023, the UJO provides the ultimate soundtrack for Carnival Time in the Crescent City with a spirited collection of Mardi Gras classics and buoyant new originals. A celebration like no other, this performance is a unique combination of big band swing feel, small group jazz spirit and brass band funkiness that would feel equally buoyant on the parade route or in the concert hall.

Along with the Marsalis family of musicians, including his father Ellis, the artist was destined for a life in music. Delfeayo formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra, a highly entertaining, 16-piece ensemble that maintains important jazz traditions such as riff playing, New Orleans polyphony, and spontaneous arrangements. In addition, he has composed music that introduces kids to jazz, reaching over 5,000 students nationally with his Swinging with the Cool School. Delfeayo has also toured internationally with jazz legends such as Ray Charles, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Elvin Jones, and Slide Hampton and has produced many recordings garnering one Grammy Award and several nominations.

A member of The First Family of Jazz, the middle Marsalis brother leads the vibrant Uptown Jazz Orchestra from his seat in the trombone section, in a performance that features the signature sound of his native New Orleans. Committed to the jazz heritage of NOLA, these performers transport the audience to Preservation Hall and the revelry spilling out from every doorway into the streets. Their February appearance at The Soraya brings to life the groove of Mardi Gras and the joy of Carnival.
