Formed in Paris in 2015, Le Consort is an early music ensemble dedicated to the quintessential chamber music genre that reigned supreme in the Baroque era: the trio sonata. Made up of two violins, a cello and a harpsichord, the ensemble’s diverse repertoire includes trio sonatas from Italy, France, Germany and England, which represent the essence of Baroque chamber music., Le Consort’s Music in the Park Series program highlights the works of well-known composers who helped define the genre, such as J.S Bach, Georg Phillipe Telemann and Francesco Geminiani, as well as those whose works remain unknown and often unpublished, such as Giorgio Gentili, Nicola Porpora, and Michel-Pignolet de Montéclair.

A turning point in classical music. Take a joyous journey to where it all began – Italy – the birthplace of the orchestra and the Baroque classical era. Widely considered to be the one of the most influential periods for modern western music, the Baroque style is marked by fuller and more complex musical compositions, including multiple independent melody lines, performed simultaneously by different instruments, and often incorporating voices, just as we see in modern symphonic presentations.

Around 1700, Venice was Europe’s musical capital. New forms such as the concerto and the trio sonata spread from the city across the continent. The French ensemble Le Consort recreates the rich musical world of Venice. At the centre are early trio sonatas by Antonio Vivaldi, which already possess the rhythmic energy and elegance typical of his style. The programme also includes works by composers who helped define the Italian instrumental style, alongside a concerto by an admirer of Vivaldi, Johann Sebastian Bach.
