Following his sensational success with Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto in February 2025, British rising star Sheku Kanneh-Mason returns to Hamburg with Saint-Saëns' elegant Cello Concerto. His unprecedented career began with his surprise victory on the television show "Britain's Got Talent" and his subsequent performance by captivating an audience of millions at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Not exactly the usual path for a young graduate of the Royal Academy of Music... Yet the likeable musician and football fan has remained down-to-earth and approachable, enjoying playing with his six siblings as much as with the world's best orchestras. The London Philharmonic Orchestra, for example, will complement the ProArte program with Edward Elgar's masterful First Symphony.

2025 marks Tunefoolery Music’s thirty-first year of connecting music with mental health. Founded at a drop-in center in Cambridge, MA, for individuals with psychiatric disabilities, Tunefoolery began as a group of four musicians who performed 15 concerts for family, friends, and peers in their first year. Today, as a Boston-based nonprofit supported by the Mass Cultural Council and the MA Dept. of Mental Health, Tunefoolery has grown to 25 active musicians (age 25-77!) who play a variety of instruments and musical genres and benefit from the organization’s performance opportunities, music education programs, and supportive community. This past year, we performed over 700 gigs at hospitals, shelters, mental health centers, and nursing homes, providing music to audiences that typically lack access to live performances. We have increased the diversity of our membership and continued to give back to mental health units where some of our members were once patients. As we celebrate over 30 years, we are proud to be member-led for the first time and are honored to be one of LSO’s Community Partners.

In 1896, on the 50th anniversary of his concerto debut, Camille Saint-Saëns wrote a final piano concerto for himself as a soloist. It is considered his "Egyptian" concerto because he supposedly composed it in Luxor on the Nile. Indeed, the second movement in particular draws inspiration from Egypt (a Nubian love song and the sounds of crickets and frogs on the Nile), but also influences from Spain and East Asia. The energetic third movement is also inspired by Saint-Saëns's frequent travels, namely by the sound of ships' steam engines. Yet the composer knows how to dress it all in melodic elegance.

Profiled as “one to watch” by The Strad and Gramophone magazines, his profile has grown to be featured in the Forbes list of 30 most influential Asians under 30, and appearances in the TV series Mozart in the Jungle. He plays the 1715 “Joachim” Stradivarius violin, once owned by the famed Hungarian violinist, Joseph Joachim.

The November concert by the Prague Radio Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Robert Jindra, will present remarkable works of American and French music. Works by wonderful female composers feature in this season's series of symphonic concerts. Salome, Ophelia and Cleopatra are the French composer Mel Bonis' Femmes de Légende, plucked from her piano cycle of the same name, written more than 50 years ago, which draws an arc from French romanticism to impressionism, and orchestrated. Her real name was Mélanie, but she published her works under the pseudonym Mel, because it wasn't deemed fitting for women to compose in those days.

The Fiato Quartet, winner of the 2022 Beverly Hills National Auditions, was formed in 2008. Its members are Carrie Kennedy and Joel Pargman, violins, Aaron Oltman, viola and Ryan Sweeney, cello. They hold degrees in music performance from the USC, Rice University, Northwestern University, and the State University of New York at Stony Brook. They each have active concert careers throughout Southern California as members of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, Los Angeles Master Chorale, Pasadena Symphony, Long Beach Symphony, New West Symphony, and Musica Angelica Baroque Orchestra. As studio musicians in Los Angeles, they record for motion pictures, television and records.

By the time of his residency in the 2023/2024 season, Joshua Bell had won the hearts of the NDR audience with his breathtakingly singing violin tone and flawless technique—assuming they weren't already fans of this living violin legend. Now the American returns with Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3, premiered in Hamburg exactly 145 years ago (on October 15, 1880) by the then-virtuoso violinist Pablo de Sarasate. This highly romantic, passionate piece is comparatively rarely heard, although its second movement, in particular, with its irresistibly catchy melody, is likely to be singable to everyone.

Unlike any other concert this season, this rare and resplendent program places the mighty organ center stage paired with the grandeur and sonic brilliance of a symphony orchestra. Strauss’ Feierlicher Einzug opens with bold brass and noble procession, followed by Barber’s Toccata Festiva, where Houlihan dazzles with commanding virtuosity and color. During an extended intermission, enjoy a festive reception with hand-crafted desserts and drink pairings. The night culminates in Saint-Saens’ “Organ” Symphony No. 3, a breathtaking fusion of orchestra and organ that builds to a triumphant finale.

Samson, a man of superhuman strength, leads a revolt of the Jews enslaved by the Philistines. Dalila, a priestess of the Philistine god Dagon, seduces Samson into revealing to her that the secret of his strength in his long hair. She then cuts it while he sleeps and turns him in to the Philistine soldiers. Blinded, chained, and subjected to ridicule, Samson begs God for one moment of his former strength, pushes apart the pillars holding up the roof, and causes the temple to collapse, killing him and his captors.

Named Gramophone’s 2023 Young Artist of the Year, violinist Stella Chen has dazzled audiences worldwide and now makes her highly anticipated Vancouver debut with Saint-Saëns’ mesmerizing Third Violin Concerto. Conductor David Danzmayr, Music Director of the Oregon Symphony, brings his dynamic energy to Schubert’s enigmatic “Unfinished Symphony.” The evening culminates in pure splendor with Richard Strauss’ shimmering suite from his sophisticated Viennese comedy, Der Rosenkavalier.

Composed during a vacation in Cairo, Saint-Saëns’s crowd-pleasing Piano Concerto No. 5, Egyptian runs the gamut from delicate grace to powerhouse virtuosity. Beloved for his captivating mix of dramatic flair and tour-de-force brilliance, Jean-Yves Thibaudet will leave you spellbound. And, castanets click, fiery flamenco rhythms blaze, and sensuous sonic colors saturate the stage in a rare complete performance of Manuel de Falla’s exuberant The Three-Cornered Hat.

A double helping of Respighi awaits you with music by this orchestrator extraordinaire. In The Fountains of Rome, he focuses on four magnificent aquatic landmarks “contemplated at the hour… in which their beauty appears most impressive to the observer.” Fish and fowl and mythological beings of all kinds are suggested — nymphs, naiads, sea horses, Neptune — with the score suitably splashy and noisy. In the final movement of Church Windows, “Pope Gregory the Great” Respighi pays homage to this powerful figure in the history of church music (i.e. Gregorian chant) and pulls out all the stops, including organ and bells. The Fifth Piano Concerto, inspired by the composer’s journey to Cairo, is a nice mix of “pseudo-Egyptian” exoticism (hence the nickname) and Saint-Saëns’ trademark flashiness. Prepare for a night of fire and fantasy as Paolo Bortolameolli leads the RPO. Wagner’s Overture to The Flying Dutchman evokes the raging sea, ghostly fate, and redemptive love that define the haunting legend. “A special talent that comes along once in a lifetime” (Toronto Star), violinist Blake Pouliot dazzles in Saint-Saëns’ Violin Concerto No. 3, a triumph of soaring melodies. Then, Prokofiev’s thrilling Symphony No. 3 takes center stage, weaving a gripping tale of mystery, intensity, and symphonic fire.
