For students of the Early Music Institute, working on this repertoire on original instruments or their replicas is second nature; for those of the Wind Instruments Institute (clarinet, horn), it's an adventure that offers a fresh perspective on the world of historically informed performance practice, as the "old" instruments ultimately open up a new sonic world.

Mozart and Salieri—these two composers are forever linked by myth, rivalry, and masterful music. Come hear some of the best of both, including Mozart’s playful Figaro Overture and his elegant Symphony No. 38 “Prague,” named after the city where Mozart debuted the work in 1787. But don’t dismiss Salieri—he and Mozart were both 18th century rock stars, vying for audiences and royal commissions alike.

Salieri’s opera of jealous derring-do tells the story of the merchant Blasio’s jealous love for his wife Ernestina; of the Count of Baniera’s love for Ernestina; of the Countess’s supposed love for the Lieutenant; and of Blasio’s love for Lisetta (who we never see in the opera). All are reconciled in the finale which takes place in the woods. The plot has been understood as a set of dangerous (but unrealised) entanglements, in which the aristocracy, the bourgeoisie, and the servant class come close to crossing established social norms.

Based on the material of the one-act play Prima la musica e poi le parole, students of the Antonio Salieri Institute for Singing and Voice Research will gain experience in the development and performance of a smaller musical theatre work through the scenic musical rehearsal of this piece, which they can later successfully implement in their own productions in their field of work.

Based upon The Merry Wives of Windsor, Salieri’s Falstaff remains one of the earliest operatic versions of Shakespeare’s play. It tells the story of the boastful Sir John Falstaff’s attempts to woo two wealthy married women, but his plans are haltered through witty and elaborate pranks. A central moment includes a scene in which Falstaff, hiding from Mr Ford in a laundry basket, is carried out of the house from under his nose. The work premiered at the Karntnertortheater in Vienna on 3 January 1799 and was much admired. It would seem the very features that cause Shakespeareans to look down upon the original work — his only small-town drama — are the aspects that benefit this successful opera buffa, in which trickery, chaos, and excellent music combine to make this a rambunctious event indeed.

Just days before the Easter holidays, the Frau Musika orchestra, conducted by specialist Andrea Marcon, pays homage to the "sacred" Salieri—it marks the 200th anniversary of his death—by pairing him with an equally sacred Mozart: the Requiem. The rich program also includes Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 1, a fruit of his youthful creativity.

The musical relationship between Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johann Nepomuk Hummel can be described as a kind of musical brotherhood, even though there was an age difference of around 22 years between the two. Mutual admiration and appreciation characterized the relationship, for Mozart recognized early on the extraordinary talent of the 8-year-old Hummel. Mozart became aware of his future pupil through his father, who was employed as conductor at the “Theater auf der Wieden” under Emanuel Schikaneder. Mozart took the boy into his Viennese apartment and taught him for two years. Afterwards, Hummel senior took the boy on extensive concert tours - exactly following Leopold Mozart's example. Hummel was celebrated especially in London and was looked after by Franz Joseph Haydn. Five years with numerous performances and lessons were to pass before Hummel settled back in Vienna. By this time, however, Mozart had already died. Hummel temporarily benefited from the knowledge of Johann Georg Albrechtsberger; He then perfected his craft under Mozart's antipode Antonio Salieri, the legendary grandmaster of late Baroque Italian opera. In the second half of his life, Salieri concentrated on teaching work in particular - his students included Ludwig van Beethoven, Carl Czerny and Franz Liszt. With his more than 40 operas, Salieri, who came from the province of Veneto, was one of the most successful composers of his generation. The dramma per musica "Armida", the tragédie lyrique "Les Danaïdes", the dramma giocoso "La scuola de' gelosi" and the commedia per musica "La fiera di Venezia" are still well known today. The latter in particular impresses with its charming Venetian local colour, which Salieri illustrates with extremely effective music on stage, as can be heard in the rousing overture. Even during his time in Vienna as imperial chamber composer and court conductor, he always remained connected to his Venetian homeland. In 1778/79, Salieri composed a symphony that his publisher gave the nickname "Veneziana" - named after the city in which some of the music was premiered. Salieri took some of the harmonies from his overtures to "La scuola de' gelosi" and "La partenza inaspettata". Both operas were written during the three years that Salieri spent in Rome, Venice and Milan. The complete reconstruction of this chamber symphony only took place in Vienna in the 1980s; because the parts were stored there in the archives of the Society of Friends of Music – on the original cover one could read: “Sinfonia n. XIX del Signor Antonio Salieri – Maestro di musica all'attual servizio de SM l'Augustissimo Imperatore – Eseguita in Venezia.”

Watch out, there's something to discover here! The 3rd Loh concert features two opera specialists and a film composer with spectacular instrumental works. Like so many before him, Antonio Salieri, who has chosen to live in Vienna, wrote variations on the popular "Follia" bass. He took the original meaning of "Follia", "madness", very seriously and created extravagant miniatures with highlights for violin, harp, percussion and wind instruments. The fact that his compatriot, the Oscar-winning film music composer Nino Rota, was also at home in classical genres is demonstrated by his bassoon concerto, which is also crowned by a series of variations. The concert concludes with Weber's 1st Symphony, a work full of energy and dynamism that already gives an idea of ​​the later creator of "Freischütz".

Miloš Forman’s Amadeus dramatizes a fictionalized rivalry between the composers Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham) and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce). The film is told through the eyes of Salieri, as he plots the downfall of the more talented Mozart. Abraham and Hulce were both nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor, with Abraham winning. The film earned 11 Oscar nominations in total, winning eight, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay. (Rated PG, 2h 40min.)
