Fancy a few artistic extravaganzas? Then the third palace concert of the season is just the right place for you. We've got a musical brawl by Biber on offer, a monkey dance à la Purcell, and wild dance numbers by Rameau. Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann, also goes against the grain of the laws of harmony. Astor Piazzolla's work isn't quite as bizarre, but then again, the tango was long considered extravagant. And Piazzolla, in particular, repeatedly built stylistic bridges to Baroque music, for example in his version of the "Four Seasons." Where Vivaldi celebrates country life, here we wander through the dance halls of Buenos Aires—including a fugue in "Spring."

You can simply go to a concert at the Philharmonie, spontaneously, during your lunch break – and with free admission: every Wednesday at 13:00 between September and June. The programme lasts 40 to 50 minutes: chamber music, piano works or a percussion duo – everything from Tchaikovsky to tango. Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Karajan-Akademie regularly perform, as well as guests from the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester, the Staatskapelle Berlin and the Berlin music conservatories. In this chamber concert, Angelina Nalbantova from Bulgaria and Nico Gutu from Moldova show us what Eastern Europe, including Romania, as well as Argentina, France, and Spain, have to offer in this broad field. The proximity to improvised jazz is almost always palpable – the focus is on Chick Corea's masterpiece "Spain." The viola figures prominently in tonight's Pro Musica concert. Dvořák's 3rd String Quintet has added an extra viola to the standard string quartet and dates from Dvořák's time in America in the early 1890s, where he went all out to find the American 'primordial music', just as he had done with his own Czech folk music idiom. We can therefore look forward to both tribal rhythms, folk tunes and Dvořák's take on what could be a new, American national anthem.

It goes without saying, then, that it is literally devilishly difficult. Fortunately, however, in star violinist Ray Chen, an artist whose breathtaking technique is more than equal to the work is on stage. And he is in excellent company: the Amsterdam Sinfonietta certainly needs no introduction. In Béla Bartók's sparkling Divertimento for String Orchestra, the top Dutch ensemble lets the mischievous humor of the Hungarian grandmaster sparkle. "Todo cambia, menos el tango," goes an Argentinian proverb. "Everything changes, except the tango." And yet Astor Piazzolla succeeded in revolutionizing precisely this genre. His recipe for success: The composer complemented the rousing rhythms of the "Tango Argentino" with classical elements and jazzy timbres to create a finely balanced stylistic kaleidoscope. His "Tango Nuevo" was born, with which he rescued the traditional Argentinian tango from the disreputable establishments of Buenos Aires and established it as a virtuoso art form. While Piazzolla had to endure some hostility from his contemporaries for his "high treason against the tango," today he is celebrated for his stylistic revolution as one of the most important composers in modern music history. Since his death in 1992, his wife, Laura Escalada Piazzolla, has dedicated herself to preserving his valuable artistic legacy, launching the "Astor Piazzolla Quintet" project specifically for this purpose. As the only ensemble with access to the tango revolutionary's complete legacy, the ensemble has been faithfully bringing his unique sound into the present for 20 years – thus fulfilling Piazzolla's lifelong ambition to create a tango that would transcend time.

Dafür hat unser Chefdirigent Joseph Bastian wieder ein Programm zusammengestellt, das mit seinem Schwung wunderbar zur sommerlichen Stimmung passt. Diesmal geht es nach Südamerika: Der Brasilianer Heitor Villa-Lobos und der Argentinier Alberto Ginastera verbanden den rhythmischen Drive ihrer Heimat mit der kompositorischen Raffinesse der europäischen Moderne. Astor Piazzolla machte den vormals verruchten Tango Argentino konzertsaalfähig; in seinem wohl berühmtesten Stück verabschiedete er sich mit sehnsuchtsvollen Klängen von seinem Vater. Darius Milhaud galt in den 1920ern als enfant terrible der Pariser Musikszene; als Attaché des französischen Botschafters in Rio de Janeiro schnappte er lokale Sounds auf und integrierte sie in seine Werke. The indomitable spirit of human perseverance is on full display in this timely and powerful program. Join us for the Bay Area premiere of Gity Razaz’s Methuselah (In Chains of Time), which is a lush and poignant reflection on the endurance of life inspired by an ancient Great Basin bristlecone pine tree growing high in the White Mountains of Inyo County in eastern California. Then be transported to the rugged landscapes of South America with Astor Piazzolla’s Aconcagua, featuring Hanzhi Wang on the bandoneon, who wields the instrument with “staggering virtuosity.” Drawing inspiration from the majestic peaks of the Andes, Piazzolla’s composition captures the fiery spirit of Argentine tango with its lush melodies and pulsating rhythms. To close out the season, Shostakovich’s monumental Symphony No. 5 serves as a stirring testament to the triumph of the human spirit over oppression and tyranny.  From its brooding opening to its victorious finale, Shostakovich’s symphony resonates with themes of resilience, redemption, and the enduring promise of hope.
