One of the most exciting classical guitarists of his generation, Raphaël Feuillâtre has been praised for “his amazing sensitivity to his music and ability to create varied and beautiful soundscapes with his instrument” (Herald Tribune). The French guitarist’s PCMS debut offers an inspiring range of repertoire, spanning from Johann Sebastian Bach to the 20th century.

There are two oceans (and two centuries) between Argentinian Astor Piazzolla and German Johann Sebastian Bach, but there are strong connections between them. That is why this concert pairs the music of these two great composers. Bach’s music often uses forms developed from dances and Piazzolla caused quite a stir when he merged his love of the tango with his love of classical music. At an early age, Piazzolla discovered the music of Bach and couldn’t stop playing it on the piano. He then became a virtuoso bandoneon player (an Argentinian accordion-like instrument that was actually invented in Germany) and learned to play Bach on that. Even when he formed his own tango band and played in the clubs of Buenos Aires, he infused his music with both jazz and Bach-inspired fugues.

The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

Twins often have uncanny similarities — Harper and Cole Randolph, for example, share exceptional musical talent. They picked up instruments during kindergarten, and their paths diverged only slightly: cellist Cole studied math, music performance, and economics at the University of Wisconsin before joining the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, while violist Harper earned her music degree from the University of Michigan and was awarded third place at the 25th Annual Sphinx Competition, Senior Division. The Randolph twins will share something else at Festival Napa Valley — the performance stage for this Bouchaine Young Artist concert.

Inspired by their Cajun and Persian heritages, this kaleidoscope of genres explores a melting-pot of musical expression, weaving together a collective story of who we are and how we got there. From grief to playfulness, these Jazz, Fiddle, Classical, and West-Asian inspired works break free of tradition leaving space for Tallā Rouge to boldly challenge the viola duo genre in this exciting 60 minute program of original arrangements.

Founded in 2017, the Reverón Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the most important chamber music ensembles from Latin America. Its members share a true passion in the performance of works by Latin American composers whose main goal is to introduce audiences to their rich repertoire of contemporary and standard works. These seasoned artists, all Venezuelan but now residing in the U.S., are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloging, performance, editing, and recording of this repertoire along with commissioning new works. Recent collaborations include La Hamaca (2021) and El Ventilador (2022), written for the trio by Venezuelan-American composer Ricardo Lorenz, and the world premiere of Barroqueada (2020) by Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Águila.

Acclaimed for her extraordinary lyricism, technique and versatility, multiple GRAMMY Award winner Sharon Isbin was named Musical America Worldwide’s 2020 Instrumentalist of the Year, the first guitarist ever to receive the coveted honor in their 59-year award history. She was inducted into the 2023 Guitar Foundation of America Hall of Fame and received their Artistic Achievement Award. Hailed as “the pre-eminent guitarist of our time”, she is the winner of Guitar Player magazine’s Best Classical Guitarist award, Germany’s Echo Klassik, Concert Artists Guild’s Virtuoso Award, the Toronto and Madrid Queen Sofia competitions, and the first guitarist to win the Munich ARD Competition. Isbin has appeared as soloist with over 200 orchestras and has given sold-out performances in many of the world’s finest halls across 40 countries, including New York’s Carnegie and Geffen Halls, Boston’s Symphony Hall, Washington D.C.’s Kennedy Center, Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center, London’s Barbican and Wigmore Halls, Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, Paris’ Châtelet, Vienna’s Musikverein, Munich’s Herkulessaal, Argentina’s Teatro Colón, and Madrid’s Teatro Real. She has served as Artistic Director and soloist of festivals she created for Carnegie Hall and the Ordway Music Theatre (St. Paul), New York’s 92NY, and the national radio series Guitarjam.
