To start our Classics Series, Music Director Nicholas Hersh and the MSO will guide us through the four seasons. The evening will start with Mendelssohn’s romantic Overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Ortiz’s La Calaca which features driving rhythms and stirring melodies inspired by the traditions of Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) that celebrate the afterlife in Mexican culture. Finally, we’ll dive deeper into each season with a “mixtape” from Hersh featuring one movement each from Vivaldi, Richter, Ysaÿe, and Piazzolla to create an exploration not only of the seasons, but of each of their cultures.

Our traditional family concert opens the season! Experience how four different composers explore the colors of the orchestra and use them to paint pictures and tell stories. The narrated story "Peter and the Wolf" also introduces listeners to the instruments of the orchestra, each representing a different animal or character. Adams, Maiya Papach, Devin Moore, viola; Tanya Tomkins, Joshua McClendon, cello; and Assad herself on piano, the evening promises to be a rich tapestry of musical genres and styles.

Our ninth season concludes with an explosion collision of Baroque and modern music. Baroque-inspired works by Guillaume Connesson, and Valerie Coleman build upon the stately introduction provided by Vivaldi’s concerto for oboe, flute, violin, bassoon, and continuo. The program concludes with Astor Piazzolla’s “Four Seasons of Buenos,” a not-so-subtle nod to Vivaldi’s famous collection, but with a strong tango flavor.

From pleasing to provocative, intellectual to insouciant, this program sheds light on the many facets of 20th-century Mexican and Argentinian classical compositions. Feel the passion and intensity of the tango in Piazzola’s renowned “Seasons”, juxtaposed with the exhilarating and profound string quartet “Música de Feria” by Revueltas. The program also features the graceful compositions of Manuel Ponce, offering a glimpse into the elegant charm of his musical creations. Works by 20th-century composers Alberto Ginastera (Argentina) and Mario Lavista (Mexico) top off an exciting and varied program.

Stanford Live, in collaboration with the San Francisco Ballet, proudly presents "Starry Nights," an enchanting evening of ballet under the stars. This spectacular event is scheduled for Friday, July 26, and Saturday, July 27, with performances beginning at 7:30 PM at the Frost Amphitheater.

"Starry Nights" promises to be a memorable experience, featuring a full evening of repertory that spans from classical to contemporary, showcasing the dynamic range and impressive talent of the SF Ballet’s dancers. The program highlights include Act II of Helgi Tomasson’s deeply moving "Swan Lake," a quintessential classical ballet known for its visually stunning corps de ballet of swans and the tender White Swan pas de deux. Additionally, audiences will be treated to the SF Ballet premiere of Ben Stevenson’s "Three Preludes," set to Sergei Rachmaninoff's piano compositions, a work that blends technical prowess with emotional depth. The evening will close with a tribute to Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen with "Variations for Two Couples," "Solo," and "5 Tango’s," set to a score by Astor Piazzolla, showcasing van Manen’s hallmark inventive style.

To make the evening extra special, VIP tables are available, offering food and beverage service (purchased separately), priority entry, and a special VIP-only menu of snacks, bites, and premium beverages. Teatro Real (Royal Opera of Madrid) and members of its orchestra will be returning to Carnegie Hall after their successful debut in September 2022. A poor girl comes to Buenos Aires and is drawn into a life of prostitution by the sound of the tango. She dies, her shadow continuing to stalk the city. Astor Piazzolla’s sultry and passionate nuevo tango fuels the surreal story of María, born “one day when God was drunk.” Explore this drama of seduction, depravity, redemption, and rebirth in Buenos Aires’ urban underbelly. This sensual tango, told in the fading beauty of Turner Hall, will knock you over with its powerful storytelling and singing.

Noah Vincent, a Bachelor of Music student under the guidance of Matthew Gaunt and Gene Pokorny, will be performing a diverse program that includes Astor Piazzolla's Tango Etude No. 3, selections from Claude Bolling's Suite for Cello and Jazz Piano Trio, Ricardo Molla's Sherezade for Tuba and Piano, Joan Tower's Copperwave, Sergei Rachmaninoff's "How Fair This Spot" from 12 Romances, Op. 21, No. 7, and Ralph Vaughan Williams' Linden Lea. He will be accompanied by an ensemble of talented musicians: Troy Archer and Fiona Shonik on trumpet, Emmett Conway on horn, Griffin Rupp on trombone, Seho Young on piano, Liam Powers on bass, and Calvin Simmers on drums.

Bach and his French contemporaries to exuberant pieces by composers from across South America. The concert will last approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes, including an intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the beauty and complexity of Feuillâtre's music. The program includes transcriptions and arrangements of works by Bach, Rameau, and others, showcasing Feuillâtre's profound affinity for Baroque music, as well as his versatility in performing compositions from various periods with clarity, grace, and emotional depth.

Feuillâtre's journey to international acclaim began with his victory at the prestigious Guitar Foundation of America GFA International Concert Artist Competition in 2018, followed by numerous awards and recognitions across Europe and beyond. His partnership with Deutsche Grammophon and his upcoming debut album further highlight his status as one of the most exciting classical guitarists of his generation.

There are two oceans (and two centuries) between Argentinian Astor Piazzolla and German Johann Sebastian Bach, but there are strong connections between them. That is why this concert pairs the music of these two great composers. Bach’s music often uses forms developed from dances and Piazzolla caused quite a stir when he merged his love of the tango with his love of classical music. At an early age, Piazzolla discovered the music of Bach and couldn’t stop playing it on the piano. He then became a virtuoso bandoneon player (an Argentinian accordion-like instrument that was actually invented in Germany) and learned to play Bach on that. Even when he formed his own tango band and played in the clubs of Buenos Aires, he infused his music with both jazz and Bach-inspired fugues.

Founded in 2017, the Reverón Piano Trio has quickly established itself as one of the most important chamber music ensembles from Latin America. Its members share a true passion in the performance of works by Latin American composers whose main goal is to introduce audiences to their rich repertoire of contemporary and standard works. These seasoned artists, all Venezuelan but now residing in the U.S., are active promoters of Latin American music through their work as scholars and entrepreneurs, and they have devoted their careers to the discovery, cataloging, performance, editing, and recording of this repertoire along with commissioning new works. Recent collaborations include La Hamaca (2021) and El Ventilador (2022), written for the trio by Venezuelan-American composer Ricardo Lorenz, and the world premiere of Barroqueada (2020) by Grammy-nominated composer Miguel del Águila.
