Fancy a few artistic extravaganzas? Then the third palace concert of the season is just the right place for you. We've got a musical brawl by Biber on offer, a monkey dance à la Purcell, and wild dance numbers by Rameau. Bach's son, Wilhelm Friedemann, also goes against the grain of the laws of harmony. Astor Piazzolla's work isn't quite as bizarre, but then again, the tango was long considered extravagant. And Piazzolla, in particular, repeatedly built stylistic bridges to Baroque music, for example in his version of the "Four Seasons." Where Vivaldi celebrates country life, here we wander through the dance halls of Buenos Aires—including a fugue in "Spring."

As valuable as this treasure is, sometimes the focus on the individual geniuses of Central European music obscures the view of the incredible diversity surrounding it. How many melodies from village and peasant wedding musicians are still to be discovered! In this chamber concert, Angelina Nalbantova from Bulgaria and Nico Gutu from Moldova show us what Eastern Europe, including Romania, as well as Argentina, France, and Spain, have to offer in this broad field. The proximity to improvised jazz is almost always palpable – the focus is on Chick Corea's masterpiece "Spain." Violin and accordion are the flexible instruments, a perfect fit here, as they stand in stark contrast to the large symphony orchestra. Have a good trip out into the wide world!

The viola figures prominently in tonight's Pro Musica concert. Dvořák's 3rd String Quintet has added an extra viola to the standard string quartet and dates from Dvořák's time in America in the early 1890s, where he went all out to find the American 'primordial music', just as he had done with his own Czech folk music idiom. We can therefore look forward to both tribal rhythms, folk tunes and Dvořák's take on what could be a new, American national anthem.

According to legend, Giuseppe Tartini received the inspiration for his highly virtuosic Devil's Trill Sonata in a dream – from none other than the devil himself. It goes without saying, then, that it is literally devilishly difficult. Fortunately, however, in star violinist Ray Chen, an artist whose breathtaking technique is more than equal to the work is on stage. And he is in excellent company: the Amsterdam Sinfonietta certainly needs no introduction. In Béla Bartók's sparkling Divertimento for String Orchestra, the top Dutch ensemble lets the mischievous humor of the Hungarian grandmaster sparkle. Considered the key musician of the Polish avant-garde, Krzysztof Penderecki, despite his adoption of an atonal musical "grammar," is among the few contemporary composers to have achieved widespread popularity, thanks primarily to the use of some of his music in the soundtracks of films such as William David Friedkin's The Exorcist and Stanley Kubrick's The Shining . A student of Artur Malawski and Stanisław Wiechowicz at the Kraków Academy of Music, where he was appointed professor in 1958, he achieved his first major musical success in 1959 by winning all three prizes at the Second Warsaw Competition for Young Composers. His international recognition came the following year with the first performance of Anaklasis at the Donaueschingen Festival, followed by the performance of the Luke Passion , considered one of his masterpieces, which saw the light in 1966 in Münster Cathedral, and his first opera, The Devils of Loudun , performed at the Hamburg State Opera in 1968. His remarkable output, inspired by his deep Catholic faith, embraces all genres, from opera to symphonic music, chamber music and concerts. The latter constitute a substantial portion of his catalog, which includes approximately 20 works for solo instrument and orchestra, composed between 1961 and 2015, the year in which this Concertino for Trumpet and Orchestra dates back . It demonstrates Penderecki's predilection for a musical form that, in the contrast between solo instrument and orchestra, rediscovers the dramatic character of musical theater, a genre in which the Polish composer excelled. Inspired by his admiration for the great technical skill demonstrated by trumpeter Gábor Boldoczki in his performance of Haydn's Concerto in E-flat , for which Penderecki also wrote the cadenzas, the Concertino demonstrates the Polish composer's interest in the sound of the trumpet in its various forms. Already in 1997, for his Seventh Symphony , inspired by the prophecy of Ezekiel, the bass trumpet had been used by him to symbolize the voice of God. In this concerto, consisting of four movements performed without interruption, the soloist, who plays alternately the trumpet and the flugelhorn, initially approaches, progressively, the stage completing the interrupted phrases of the orchestra. Once this first part ( Andante ) of the short first movement, which is notable for its great agogic variety, has concluded, the soloist, who has now reached the stage, presents the first theme (Allegro scherzondo ) characterized by dotted rhythms and wide intervals. This section is followed by a lyrical Andante and a demonic Allegro that lead to the cadenza played on the flugelhorn, the protagonist of the second movement, Larghetto , which, characterized by a splendid cantilena from the soloist who dialogues with the other instruments, concludes with a thunderous fortissimo and a pause. In the third movement, Intermezzo , the trumpet takes center stage again, muting it in dialogue with the bass clarinet. The fourth movement, Vivo ma non troppo , is a brilliant piece in which the theme of the first is reprised.
