Violinist

Arvo Pärt is one of the two most performed, living classical composers in the world. He is most well-known for his deeply spiritual choral works, which are shaped by his tintinnabuli style (Latin for “little bells”), that gives his works their characteristic clarity and stillness.  However, this is not the only side of his music. In this Encounters, we will explore Pärt’s secular and folk inspired pieces, including Fratres for violin and piano, and Es sang vor langen Jahren for voice, violin, and viola, alongside video clips of his early film compositions. We will also feature two works by composers inspired by Pärt’s work, including Omar Daniel’s Runo Songs, and Anna Pidgorna’s Pärtian Meditation on an Invented Folksong.

Hailed by National Public Radio as “one of today’s most compelling composers for the human voice,” Sarah Kirkland Snider’s Mass for the Endangered is a poignant choral meditation on the fragility of our natural world. Blending Nathaniel Bellows’ evocative poetry with the traditional Latin Mass, this work is a plea for compassion and stewardship in the face of environmental crisis. Also presented alongside this work is Andrew Balfour’s Gaze Upon the Trees, R. Murray Schafer’s virtuosic Wild Bird for violin and harp, as well as works by Chris Hutchings, Olivier Messiaen, and Arvo Pärt. Soundstreams’ opening concert is a deeply moving reflection on our responsibility, relationship and connectivity to the planet and its creatures.

The ARC Ensemble performs Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s extravagantly lush Piano Quintet, and works for string quartet and clarinet by his Viennese contemporary Ernest Kanitz. Both settled in Los Angeles during the 1930s, where Korngold became the most celebrated film composer of the day and Kanitz became a legendary teacher at the University of Southern California.

The Royal Conservatory of Music

The ARC Ensemble celebrates its 20th anniversary with Walter Braunfels's ravishing String Quintet, one of ARC’s early discoveries. The program also features the lush Romantic works of Frederick Block, whose thriving career was cut short in 1938 when he fled Vienna and moved to New York. Block's music has not been heard in over 75 years. ARC’s Artistic Director, Simon Wynberg, will introduce these two extraordinary composers.
