And there was light: By the end of the 16th century at the latest, affect had become an indispensable component of music. Stylus luxurians – "luminous style" – is what music theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard calls this creative device, which was also prevalent in the Baroque period and is characterized by theatricality and intense emotional expression. The Ensemble Astrum researches, experiments, and creates. In their program "And there was light ," the trio of artists led by award-winning Salzburg recorder player Felix Gutschi and Dutch soprano Noëlle Drost dedicate themselves to the stylus luxurians and take the audience on an emotionally profound journey through the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods.

Louise Brugger Bidwell teaches piano at UC Berkeley in the Music 168C Program. She is trained as a pianist and composer and enjoys playing a variety of the wonderful keyboard instruments in the UCB Music Department. She has studied composition at UC Berkeley and gave piano concerts at Stanford for ten years while studying with Adolph Baller. She has performed many concerts at UC Berkeley on the departments historic Erard and Wieck pianos. Her interest in the harpsichord and early keyboard instruments has developed in recent years. Besides attending Professor Davitt Moroney’s course on French Music and Poetry, she also attended his Masterclass in the Music of William Byrd at the Flint Collection in Delaware. She gave concerts of William Byrd’s Music in a Noon Concert and at the Women’s Faculty Club. In 2020, she gave an on-line concert at the Women’s Faculty Club to celebrate JS Bach’s Birthday. She has given concerts at the Women’s Faculty Club and at St. Alban’s Church in Albany featuring Élisabeth Jacquet de La Guerre, Johann Jakob Froberger, François Couperin and others, including John Thow and Jeremy Hunt.

Thomas Ospital, originally from the French Basque Country, has mastered this art like few others. Born in 1990, he has been the titular organist at the great organ of Saint-Eustache in Paris since 2015. He calls artists playing the organ adventurers, since they always have to adjust to new instruments and new spaces – usually with very little time.

The clavichord instrument emerged in the 1400’s, as referenced to an instrument owned by John II, the Good King of France, called an eschiquier, which resembled an organ, but operated by means of strings, according to writings of the king’s doctor, Henri Arnaut. The word “Clavichord” appeared in German writings during this time, and a German altar-carving from 1425 depicts the instrument. Like the harpsichord, it combined the keyboard of the organ, but incorporated the hammers striking strings found in the Renaissance dulcimer. By the Baroque era, the clavichord had become the predominant practice instrument and compositional tool for composers. Sound is created when brass strings are struck by tangents, which are small metal blades. Because of the instrument’s size and construction, it could not produce a sound loud enough to be used for performance outside of private home concerts.

The French harpsichordist, suggested The Washington Post, ‘is a master of his instrument with the sort of communicative gifts normally encountered in musicians twice his age. He internalizes the music he plays so completely that any interpretative ambivalence or miscalculation is unthinkable’. Jean Rondeau names his programme after a well-known piece with an enigmatic title by François Couperin, whose music features alongside that of Rameau and Joseph-Nicolas-Pancrace Royer (c.1705-55), members of a younger generation of Couperin’s colleagues.

A passionate collaborator, Katie Huszcza is a cellist with a strong interest in exploring the chamber and orchestral music repertoire. She is currently pursuing her Master of Music degree in Cello Performance at the Carnegie Mellon School of Music studying with Pittsburgh Symphony Principal Cellist, Anne Martindale Williams. Originally from the Washington, D.C. area, Huszcza graduated magna cum laude from The Catholic University of America (CUA) with her Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance and a minor in Performing Arts Management. While at CUA, she studied with Dr. Dorotea Rácz and was assistant principal cello of the Catholic University Symphony Orchestra. In 2019 and 2021, Huszcza attended the Sewanee Summer Music Festival in Tennessee. Additionally, she also recently performed with the Pan American Symphony in June 2022. An avid chamber musician, Huszcza’s piano trio performed music of Astor Piazzolla for the composer’s 100-year anniversary recital series at the Rome School of Music (CUA). As a soloist, Huszcza was a finalist in the 2019 James Madison University (JMU) Concerto Competition, performing the Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor. Her previous teachers include David Hardy and Carl Donakowski.

Casco Phil will be accompanying the stars of the Brussels Cello Festival during this festive gala evening.

In the wonderful acoustic of the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels, artistic director Han Bin Yoon organises a biennial festival showcasing the warm tenor tones of the stringed instrument. During this third edition of the festival, Casco Phil will be the musical partner for a varied programme of symphonic cello music. Iconic cellist Gary Hoffman will play Bruch’s masterpiece Kol Nidrei, while the Queen Elisabeth Laureate Hayoung Choi will guide the audience through a less known work, La Muse et le Poète. Anne Gastinel will present a Belgian masterpiece with Ysaÿes’ Meditation while David Cohen – Principal cellist of the London Symphony Orchestra – joins us for the Saint-Saëns’ Concerto in A minor.

The ACO returns to the historic Harlem Parish, the stunning location of its fall ’20 filmed production of The Chaconne Project. Now we assemble the same performers to Revisit that experience in this lively program of Baroque repertoire with a focus on the chaconne—a musical genre that evolved from the bawdiness of 16th-century Spanish street dances to the refinement of Bach’s Chaconne for Solo Violin. In the splendid acoustics of Harlem Parish, we showcase ten vibrant chaconnes that use various combinations of strings, plucked instruments, harpsichord, voice and percussion. Acclaimed Mexican lyric soprano Guadalupe Peraza dazzles with her “mellow, conversational” mezzo (Opera News) and emotional delivery, complemented by dance and hand percussion.
