Female composers, cultural identities, contemporary music: Junyan Chen's interests are as broad as her talent is impressive. At the 2024 Leeds International Piano Competition, she not only won second prize, but also the Chamber Music Prize and the Alexandra Dariescu Award – a talent worth keeping an eye on! At ProArte, the young artist will search for connections between times and places with a multifaceted program: works by François Couperin will be presented alongside Maurice Ravel's homage to his fellow Baroque composer. Ravel's famous "La valse" and works by Olivier Messiaen reveal further facets of French soundscapes for solo piano. And with Amy Beach's "Variations on Balkan Themes," a transatlantic cultural encounter joins the pattern of connecting lines.

And there was light: By the end of the 16th century at the latest, affect had become an indispensable component of music. Stylus luxurians – "luminous style" – is what music theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard calls this creative device, which was also prevalent in the Baroque period and is characterized by theatricality and intense emotional expression. The Ensemble Astrum researches, experiments, and creates. The clavichord instrument emerged in the 1400’s, as referenced to an instrument owned by John II, the Good King of France, called an eschiquier, which resembled an organ, but operated by means of strings, according to writings of the king’s doctor, Henri Arnaut. The word “Clavichord” appeared in German writings during this time, and a German altar-carving from 1425 depicts the instrument. Like the harpsichord, it combined the keyboard of the organ, but incorporated the hammers striking strings found in the Renaissance dulcimer. By the Baroque era, the clavichord had become the predominant practice instrument and compositional tool for composers. Sound is created when brass strings are struck by tangents, which are small metal blades. Because of the instrument’s size and construction, it could not produce a sound loud enough to be used for performance outside of private home concerts.

Les Violons du Roy has been a focal point of Québec City’s musical life since it was founded by Bernard Labadie in 1984. The ensemble takes its name from the celebrated court orchestra of the French kings. Under music director Jonathan Cohen, this orchestra soars to truly regal heights. With classical guitarist Miloš, Les Violons du Roy explores an expansive chamber orchestra repertoire with a skillful faithfulness to the period of each work.

Georg Muffat’s words are as relevant today as when he wrote them in 1695. Here, musical styles range from his French-infused dances to Andrzej Panufnik’s unique recreation of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century musical fragments from Poland that were almost lost to the ravages of war. Our season culminates with an Italianate symphony by the Ukrainian composer Maxim Berezovsky.
