They’re two of opera’s hottest rising stars. Bolivian soprano Shelén Hughes Camacho and American baritone Joseph Parrish have impressed audiences and competition juries around the globe, with their “elegance and eloquence” (Seen and Heard International) and “arresting stage presence” (Opera News). Now, these two young vocalists make their Cliburn Concerts debut with an eclectic program spanning spirituals, opera, art song, musical theater, and pop music, accompanied by pianist Amir Farid. Don’t miss this one-night performance by these extraordinary young artists —partners on and off the stage— on the brink of stardom.

A musical journey uniting Europe and Brazil, two distant yet surprisingly close universes. The journey opens with alternating Chopin’s Preludes and Camargo Guarnieri’s Ponteios: short, lyrical, and concentrated forms that dialogue like mirrors across time and space. From the romantic delicacy of Schumann to the ritualistic and powerful universe of Brasílio Itiberê’s Suite litúrgica negra, the program leads us into soundscapes where the sacred meets the popular. Debussy’s impressionistic heart, with his Estampes, ideally intertwines with the Brazilian palette, paving the way for the vivacity of Gnattali, Tia Amélia, Nazareth, and Mesquita, in a crescendo that finds its synthesis in Villa-Lobos’s inexhaustible imagination. A bridge that represents a dialogue between two worlds that recognize themselves in the vital energy of music.

An award-winning guitarist of extraordinary passion; Gaëlle Solal discovered the classical guitar at the age of five. Now a virtuoso of her craft, her curiosity explores the boundaries between classical music and popular music. A programme with a distinct South American sound, this concert pays hommage to one of the most celebrated Brazilian composers and classical guitarists, Villa Lobos.
