Hear one of the world’s great Mahler orchestras perform the First Symphony—a work that the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performed under Mahler’s own baton in its Dutch premiere. Like a sunny day in the Czech Republic, full of joy and harmony, Antonín Dvořák's Serenade for Winds opens the evening's concert. The orchestra paints pictures of the simplicity and beauty of the countryside through playful melodies. Schönberg's Verklärte Nacht was inspired by Richard Dehmel's poem of the same name, where the power of love transforms the night into something transfigured. The poem explores complex emotions and themes around love and forgiveness, which is reflected in Schönberg's musical interpretation. These works represent extremes in the evolution of music and come together for a contrasting evening. As a musical bridge between these works, the Adagio from the String Quintet by Bruckner is played - here in a version for string orchestra

Conductor Nikolai Malko was born in Ukraine in 1883, was educated at St. Petersburg and worked as both conductor and teacher, but left what had become the Soviet Union in 1929 and did not return. In return, he gained invaluable importance for e.g. The Radio Symphony Orchestra, now the DR Symphony Orchestra, here in Denmark. He helped to build the orchestra and was on the podium when the first Thursday concert was played in 1933. Although he settled in the USA, he was a regular guest conductor of the orchestra and therefore a few years after his death the first international conducting competition was held under his name. It has been held under the auspices of DR since 1965. It is a competition for young conductors who, in addition to money, probably just as importantly win more engagements so that they can perform as they should - on the podium in front of an orchestra.

Brahms’s only violin concerto – and one of the very greatest examples of this form in the history of music – is here performed by the SDSO and Rafael Payare with the celebrated Armenian violinist Sergey Khachatryan. Following Beethoven’s lofty example, Brahms wrote a piece that simultaneously makes massive demands upon a top virtuoso soloist, while at the same time having the depth, beauty, scale and orchestral muscularity of a great symphony. Rafael Payare is world-renowned for his interpretations of Brahms’ symphonies, and this performance will surely bring out the most remarkable qualities of his music. Payare is also a passionate champion of the music of Arnold Schoenberg, and serves on the Artistic Honorary Committee of Schönberg 150, celebrating the 150th anniversary of the composer’s birth. Schoenberg began his long creative life in Vienna in the high romantic age of Brahms, Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, and ended it in Los Angeles as an American citizen in 1951, at one of the high points of 20th century modernism. Schoenberg’s gorgeously scored and richly melodic tone-poem, based on the tragic love-story of Pelléas et Mélisande, which also inspired great music from Fauré, Debussy and Sibelius, is one of his most beautiful orchestral scores, written in a style somewhere between Brahms and Wagner but with a rich and dark orchestral coloring that is all Schoenberg’s own.

Let us serenade you with the melodies of Strauss’ Serenade, a short and sweet tribute to romance directly influenced by the composer’s grand predecessor, Mozart. The ode to lyricism continues with Holst’s Lyric Movement performed by Principal Viola Brant Bayless, who captures the depth and freedom of the piece. In a showcase of his instrumental prowess, Bayless follows with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 5—the viola pitted in a melancholy monologue against the rich, dark timbres of the wind instruments. Finally, descend into Schoenberg’s achingly beautiful Transfigured Night, directly inspired by Richard Dehmel’s poem. This story tells of heartbreak and redemption as a woman confesses to her new partner that she is carrying another man’s child, yet he responds that their love will shape this child into one who is theirs. They embrace and continue their walk with a new transfigured perspective on life under the light of the moon and stars.

Jean-Louis Haguenauer is professor of music in piano at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he has been on faculty since 1998. He was previously professor of piano at the Strasbourg Conservatory in France. Haguenauer has performed extensively throughout Europe, the United States, and Asia. He has appeared as a soloist on virtually every important concert series in France and has performed regularly on Radio France and French national television. He has also participated in numerous summer festivals, including La Roque d’Anthéron, Radio-France Montpellier, Jacobins de Toulouse, Orangerie de Sceaux, les Arcs, Library of Congress Summer Chamber Festival, Indiana University Summer Music, and Kreeger Museum Chamber Festival. As a chamber musician, Haguenauer has collaborated with the Fine Arts, Ébène, and Pacifica quartets, Percussions de Strasbourg, Ensemble Accroche-Notes, and a host of distinguished instrumentalists and vocalists. He is a founding member of the Galpérine-Tsan-Haguenauer Piano Trio, launched in Paris in 1988. From 1991 to 1997, he was a member of the Florence Gould Hall Chamber Players, and from 2003 to 2007, he was the pianist of the American Chamber Players. He graduated from the École Normale de Musique in Paris and the Geneva Conservatory with Germaine Mounier, Louis Hiltbrand, and Jean Fassina as his principal mentors. In addition to piano studies, he pursued composition and musical analysis with such luminaries as Nadia Boulanger and Henri Dutilleux. He is a Yehudi Menuhin Foundation Prize winner. Haguenauer has published solo and collaborative CDs for Harmonia-Mundi, Meridian, Ligia Digital, ADDA, Verany, and other labels. His four-CD complete recording of Debussy’s mélodies with some of the best French singers of the time was released as a celebration of Debussy’s one-hundred fiftieth birthday. The project was supported in part by an IU New Frontiers in the Arts and Humanities grant.

In the world of classical music, people often talk about the Three Big Bs: Bach, Beethoven and Brahms. At this concert, the focus is on three great S's from the 20th century: Schönberg, Strauss and Stravinsky. Three composers who all approached music and the modern century in completely different ways. Schönberg, who by the way turns 150 in 2024, invented a completely new tonal language, but remained a romantic at heart. Richard Strauss composed romantic timbres but expressed emotions like the expressive artists of the early 20th century, and Stravinsky throughout his career used the parts of music history that made his own music stand out more clearly. Schönberg's Five Orchestral Pieces are from 1909 and are filled to the brim with emotion. From the furiously ecstatic to the deeply beautiful, all in something that, more than 100 years later, is a modern tonal language. Strauss's oboe concerto is full of exuberance and narrative joy, and the tonal language is romantic – yet you constantly sense that the music is from the 20th century. The second part of the concert is with music by Igor Stravinsky; The wind symphony and the Suite from the ballet The Firebird. Sharp, swinging music for winds and sweeping poignant music for the whole orchestra, showing two sides of the famous Russian composer.

Schoenberg's music, before he became known as a father of 20th-century 12-tone composition, developed from the harmonic bedrock of Romantics like Brahms, Mahler and Richard Strauss. His "Transfigured Night" was further heightened when Schoenberg met the love of his life and found inspiration in poetry of hope and acceptance. Led by Louis Langrée, the CSO performs this, along with Brahms' Violin Concerto, which features the return of Grammy-winning violinist Augustin Hadelich, and a co-commission from former CSO Composer-in-Residence Jonathan Bailey Holland.

This gala concert event will take place at the Gasteig HP8, Isarphilharmonie in Munich, with performances scheduled for Friday, April 19, 2024, at 8:00 pm, and Saturday, April 20, 2024, at 7:00 pm.

"Gurre-Lieder" is an oratorio in three parts for soli, speaker, choir, and orchestra, featuring an impressive lineup of performers including tenor Stuart Skelton, soprano Dorothea Röschmann, mezzo-soprano Jamie Barton, bass-baritone Josef Wagner, tenor Peter Hoare, and speaker Thomas Quasthoff. They will be joined by the Bavarian Radio Chorus, MDR Chorus, and the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks to bring Schönberg's masterpiece to life.

This performance is particularly special as "Gurre-Lieder" represents the final peak of late Romanticism, requiring over four hundred performers and the largest orchestra ever assembled by a composer. Sir Simon Rattle's personal affection for the piece and its significance in the history of the BRSO make it the perfect work to celebrate both the orchestra's 75th and Schönberg's 150th anniversaries.

An introduction will precede each concert, starting at 6:45 pm on Friday and 5:45 pm on Saturday, providing insights into the monumental work and its historical context.

It opens with Hindemith’s Kammermusik No. 1, a masterstroke of postmodernism. Erich Korngold’s hit suite from Much Ado About Nothing offers an early glimpse at his wildly successful partnership with Max Reinhardt, more than a decade before they fled Europe and made Hollywood history. Schoenberg’s Accompaniment to a Cinematographic Scene is—almost certainly intentionally—not so much a film “accompaniment” as it is a full-fledged main attraction. Mezzo-soprano Wallis Giunta joins in HK Gruber and Christian Muthspiel’s brand-new arrangement of The Seven Deadly Sins, a biting satire composed the same year Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht’s works were banned in their native Germany.

One hundred years after its world premiere—and more than 90 years since ASO founder Leopold Stokowski premiered the work in the U.S. with the Philadelphia Orchestra—the ASO presents Arnold Schoenberg’s massive Gurre-Lieder. Wagnerian in conception, the cantata represents what is arguably the apotheosis of late Romanticism, with lush, colorful orchestration, endless melodies, and highly chromatic harmonic language. The sheer size of the work—the orchestra alone requires more than 150 musicians—and the logistical challenges it poses, renders Gurre-Lieder the undeserved status of a rarity. Making this performance possible is emblematic of the ASO’s mission to provide New York audiences with rarely performed repertoire.

Cheyenne Cruz’s playing has been described as “above and beyond the mastery of [her] instrument" and her compositions as “playful, full of humor and whimsy, almost filling the air with laughter”. Jorge Cruz is the principal bassoonist of the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra and second bassoonist/contrabassoonist of the Abilene Philharmonic. He also regularly performs with the Dallas Opera Orchestra and the Shreveport Symphony Orchestra. Additionally, Jorge’s serves as bassoonist/saxophonist with the Air National Guard Band of the Southwest, historically known as the 531st Air Force Band, a position he has held since 2001.

This first program includes works by Hindemith, Strauss, Schönberg and Ravel. The second program features Mahler’s colossal Ninth Symphony, the final — and arguably the most significant — completed symphony of the composer’s career.

Experience the Vienna Philharmonic’s breathtaking range of color. The concert opens with Hindemith’s first composition for wind ensemble, which in 1926 helped establish him as one of Germany’s leading post-war composers. It is followed by the single-movement symphonic fantasy that Richard Strauss crafted from the “best parts” of his 1919 opera Die Frau ohne Schatten. In Schoenberg’s first 12-tone orchestral work—one of his most approachable—the composer showcases what Franz Welser-Möst calls “a new way of writing music in a purely musical way … without any influences from outside music.” The program closes with Ravel’s La Valse, a remarkably orchestrated work whose extra-musical significance is passionately debated.

Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1 is an iconic masterpiece that compressed a whole symphony orchestra to 15 musicians and four movements to one. His model inspired many others, including Franz Hasenöhrl, who arranged Richard Strauss’s tuneful Till Eulenspiegel from a massive orchestra to violin, clarinet, horn, bassoon, and double bass. Two-time Oscar-winning film composer Leonard Rosenman studied with Schoenberg. Scott Dunn’s piano four hands arrangement offers a taste of Rosenman’s East of Eden. Two works packed with emotion provide a bittersweet finale to the final season. Bach’s monumental Chaconne is a 15-minute tour de-force. Jacaranda fades to black with Mahler’s final work, the fiercely beautiful Symphony No. 10 Adagio arranged by Hans Stadlmair for strings.

Schoenberg’s Five Piano Pieces, Op. 23, which marks the crystallization of his twelve-tone technique is the launchpad. Other groundbreaking piano methods are heard in Leo Ornstein’s Suicide in an Airplane, distinctive for its tone clusters. Pierre Boulez’s fascinating 12 Notations uses the number 12 as a self-imposed structure with a 12-note row forming the basis of 12 solo piano pieces, each just 12 bars long. The indirect passing of the Schoenberg baton is heard in A Love Supreme, a progressive jazz masterpiece by the famed innovator John Coltrane, whose groundbreaking style is rooted in Schoenberg’s techniques, gleaned from his teacher Dennis Sandole, a Schoenberg student. Coltrane also studied with Ornstein as a teenager in Philadelphia.

The Borromeo String Quartet were very popular at the chamber music series we presented for many years at The Kalliroscope Gallery here in Groton. Tonight they will join us for this concert’s centerpiece: Arnold Schoenberg’s Concerto in B-flat Major for String Quartet and Orchestra. Written in 1933, this delightfully inventive work is described as a ‘free transcription’ of G.F. Händel’s Concerto Grosso, Op. 6, No. 7.

Solo piano works illustrate the composer in LA. Eldon Rathburn’s Schoenberg vs. Gershwin: A Tennis Match portrays close friends and tennis partners. The Canadian film composer won the LA Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist Award in 1945 for which Schoenberg was a judge. Erich Zeisl’s Pieces for Barbara were composed for his young daughter who married Schoenberg’s son Ronald. Ernst Krenek, who emigrated in 1938, composed the witty and heartfelt George Washington Variations. Set to Lord Byron’s protest of tyranny, Schoenberg’s Ode to Napoleon, composed during WW II, extols Washington.
