Terri Lyne is a four-time Grammy Award-winning drummer, producer, and educator, and has performed on more than 100 recordings spanning her 40-year career. She has worked tirelessly to fight for inclusivity and elevate the voice of women, trans, and non-binary jazz musicians, serving as the Founder and Artistic Director of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice. Experience the thrill of New Standards, a project that kicks down the doors of the jazz patriarchy and celebrates women’s incredible contributions to the jazz canon, past and present, by bringing them to the mainstage.

This tribute concert honors the life and legacy of the great jazz innovator, composer, bandleader, and saxophonist Wayne Shorter who passed away in March 2023. These performances feature five longtime Shorter collaborators in their BSO debuts, including the Grammy Award-winning bassist and vocalist esperanza spalding. spalding wrote the libretto for Shorter’s 2022 opera …(Iphigenia), which was premiered in Boston in 2021 and is based on the ancient Greek tragedy by Euripides.

The GRAMMY® nominated vocal supergroup, säje, is the brainchild of vocalist/composers Sara Gazarek, Amanda Taylor, Johnaye Kendrick, and Erin Bentlage. Traversing a vast array of compelling original material, beloved jazz standards, and contemporary re-imaginings of artists such as The Bad Plus, YEBBA, and Björk, the all-female collective has demonstrated their devotion to thoughtful, sophisticated original compositions and heartfelt covers. Their highly anticipated debut album was just released, and features new original work and compelling covers, highlighting collaborations with artists Jacob Collier, Terri Lyne Carrington, Ambrose Akinmusire, and more.

Outstanding activist, educator, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and her band Social Science appear on the Celebrity Series this season, two years after earning a Grammy nomination for their album, Waiting Game. Other guests join the group for a multi-dimensional vocal and instrumental musical experience.

Carrington is the artistic director and founder of the Berklee Institute of Jazz and Gender Justice.
