As appealing as a solo concerto is, isn't a double concerto twice as interesting? Two soloists who pass the ball to each other, who compete, outdo each other, who come together for a pas de deux? This evening, two are simply twice as good: the soloists of the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra. Three concertos for two solo instruments are on the programme, composed by the baroque trio of Bach, Telemann and Vivaldi. Of his 50 or so concertos for two instruments, Vivaldi only composed one for two trumpets, a solitaire in the extensive catalogue of works by the virtuoso Venetian. Bach's double concerto BWV 1043 was also a one-off piece - anyone who writes for two writes exclusively. The evening will be led by the British harpsichordist and conductor Jonathan Cohen, who has made a name for himself not only with his own ensemble Arcangelo. He has toured with the Academy of Ancient Music as well as with William Christie's ensemble Les Arts Florissants, which has now appointed him Associate Conductor. Franz Schubert's Mozart-like 5th Symphony, probably the most mature of his early symphonic works, will be the delightful finale of this Baroque+ program.

To celebrate PBO’s abundance of talent, each season will now feature a program curated by an orchestra member. First up is our esteemed leader, Carla Moore, in a concert that delves into Georg Philipp Telemann’s vast musical cupboard. We explore a kaleidoscope of textures and styles, from the musings of solo lute to a declamatory overture for the full cohort of strings. Further contrast abounds with French and Italian works by two of Telemann’s likely influencers, Joseph Bodin de Boismortier and Francesco Durante.

In Passions Revealed, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra takes you on a journey that dives into the rich, evocative, and stirring emotions found in works by Fasch, Locatelli, Vivaldi, Marais, Telemann, and Bach. 

The program explores a wide variety of colours and affects. We open with a rousing Fasch overture that conveys confidence and fearlessness. The strings are then featured in a hauntingly beautiful and wistful concerto grosso by Locatelli. A restless but ultimately hopeful journey through the night, from dusk to dawn, follows in Vivaldi's programmatic La Notte. We close the first half with a gorgeous celebration of love in the chaconne from Marais’s opera Alcyone.

Jean-Baptiste Lully was a French composer, conductor, and dancer who worked in the court of Louis the XIV. Despite his venerable status as an artist, Lully is perhaps best known for his death: He struck himself in the foot with a long conducting staff (this was before conductors waived batons, and instead would keep the orchestra in time by banging a large staff on the floor) and subsequently died of the infected wound.

Join us for an enchanting evening of baroque music at Paxton House with the performance of "Music at Paxton: Ensemble Hesperi" on the 23rd of July, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. This unique concert will take place in the stunning Picture Gallery, offering a perfect backdrop for an immersive musical journey.

Ensemble Hesperi, a dynamic and innovative London-based period ensemble, is renowned for their lively and enticing performances that bring the early 1700s London music scene to life. The concert will feature a rich program including Handel Trio Sonatas in F major and B minor, Playford's "Grimstock" and "Bobbing Joe" from The English Dancing Master, Purcell's Sonatas of Three Parts, No.1 in G minor, Telemann Trio Sonata in G minor, and Oswald's Sonata on Scots Tunes "Airs for Autumn", among others. The ensemble will also perform additional music by Blow, Sammartini, Elisabetta de Gambarini, and Robert Bremner, reflecting the craze for Scottish music that swept the English capital.
