Stylus luxurians – "luminous style" – is what music theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard calls this creative device, which was also prevalent in the Baroque period and is characterized by theatricality and intense emotional expression. The Ensemble Astrum researches, experiments, and creates. In their program "And there was light ," the trio of artists led by award-winning Salzburg recorder player Felix Gutschi and Dutch soprano Noëlle Drost dedicate themselves to the stylus luxurians and take the audience on an emotionally profound journey through the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

Freshly sworn in as Leipzig's Thomaskontor, Johann Sebastian Bach was full of energy in 1723, composing, among other works, the "Magnificat," a eulogy cantata for the Advent season for his new choir. Shortly after the annunciation by the angel Gabriel, Mary tells her cousin the good news of her pregnancy with the Savior. This message sounds especially joyful when Vox Luminis, an outstanding early music ensemble, is on stage.

The Baroque era opened the door for the violin to emerge as a defining voice in music. This program features an all-star cast of CMS violinists performing thrilling solo roles in Baroque concertos, including Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons, one of the earliest examples of program music. Linked to sonnets possibly written by Vivaldi himself, the works depict the seasons through musical suggestions of babbling brooks, thunder and lightning, blasts of winter wind, and birdsong.

This year, exquisite music from the late Baroque and early Classical periods will conjure up a cozy, festive Advent and Christmas atmosphere in the town hall hall—warm orchestral sounds from the German cosmopolitan Telemann, a Christmas symphony from France, a Christmas concert from Italy, flute concertos from the brilliant Bach son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and from the Venetian "Maestro assoluto" Vivaldi. The virtuoso flute tones come from the young Fabian Egger, a competition prize winner, scholarship holder at the Salzburg Mozarteum, and flautist at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra. The conductor is Torsten Johann, harpsichordist and co-founder of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra.

We are absolutely delighted to perform for you the world première of a new composition by Dominic McGonigal — ‘Sunset at Sea’. Dominic’s work has been described as having “great textures and a perfect sense of spacing and pacing” and his ‘Ave Maris Stella Takes Flight’ recently won the Palimpsest Competition at Canterbury Cathedral.

After training as a chorister, Dominic read music at King’s College, Cambridge where he sang bass in King’s Chapel Choir. He found his voice as a composer with his 'Missa Et Incarnatus Est', a large work for 8-part choir, soloists and small orchestra. These days he combines a career in the music business with performing and conducting, including appointments as musical director of COMA Voices, Stoneleigh Choral Society, the Church of St Anselm & St Cecilia in Holborn, Opera Spezzata, EJMS Big Band and St Giles Consort …. and as for this piece, you’ll just have to come and hear it for yourself.

Bach’s D minor Partita with the expressively and technically transcendent Chaconne — considered the “Everest” of violin performance. The Partita is balanced by music of Bach’s contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, selections from Nicolò Paganini’s brilliant Caprices, and a Bach-inspired solo sonata from 1923 by the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, the Sonata No. 5, from 1923. American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s 1979 Blue/s Forms is a work championed by Hadelich in recital.

In our tumultuous modern era, the pleasures of German Baroque music offer a refined, soothing balm. Ivars Taurins conducts a program that includes Handel’s bright-hued Music for the Royal Fireworks, written for King George II to celebrate the end of the War of the Austrian Succession, as well as his stately Organ Concerto, composed for performances at Covent Garden. Telemann’s Wassermusik pays tribute to Hamburg and its river, the Elbe. Telemann portrays mythological figures like tritons and naiads before turning to the city’s “merry boat-people.” The Sinfonia in G Minor by Hasse, best known for his role in developing opera seria, stirs up a whirlwind with energetic strings.

Composition during the "Baroque" period was characterized by enormous artistic diversity, virtuoso ornamentation, and deep emotional spirituality – in hardly any region and era is this more evident than in Thuringia in the 17th and 18th centuries, which boasted a cornucopia of musical excellence. Thuringian Baroque music developed in a landscape rich in cultural influences, ecclesiastical power, and a strong bourgeois spirit. The "small states" provided the ideal stage for musical exchange: the ducal courts and royal residences, above all Gotha, Eisenach, and Weimar, were in lively competition with one another; they pushed their court composers to ever greater heights and demanded avant-garde excellence from them.

On the penultimate day of summer – a matinee under the sign of the sun: with works by Telemann, Haydn, and Wolf, the program explores the light in its diverse musical refractions. As an expression of courtly splendor under the "Sun King" Louis XIV, the overture suite shone far beyond France's borders. The genre also became extremely popular in Germany, not least thanks to the work of Georg Philipp Telemann. His overture suite "La Bizarre" combines French and Italian stylistic elements in an original way. From baroque radiance to classical transparency: two string quartets from Haydn's so-called "Sun Quartets," Op. 20, form a framework. The stormy G minor quartet forms a charming contrast to the gallantly serene A major quartet, which surprises with an artfully crafted final fugue.

Some contemporaries never meet, others remain connected for life: For example, George Frideric Handel and George Philipp Telemann first met in Halle at the beginning of the 18th century and deepened their friendship through years of correspondence. Telemann was not only a passionate letter writer, but also learned to love gardening in his adopted home of Hamburg. From London, Handel supplied the amateur gardener with rare flower bulbs. In general, the friendship blossomed magnificently: there are 117 musical ideas that Handel adopted or parodied from Telemann. The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra devotes itself to some examples of these, supplementing it with the third great composer of the time, Johann Sebastian Bach. Although Bach and Telemann did not exchange botanical gifts, they were just as close on a familial and musical level.

Sibelius's violin concerto is now the most performed of all violin concertos from the 20th century. Yet its musical language belongs to the late 19th century, and the music is warm and lyrical, dramatic and melancholic. Sibelius, himself a violinist, possibly wrote the concerto he himself would have wanted to play – albeit on a technical level far beyond his own. In this way, the violin concerto can be seen as a farewell to the youthful dreams of a career as a violin virtuoso. It is among the more challenging in the genre, as many violinists have attested.

When seeking out the forerunners of the influential »Mannheim School«, one often stumbles across the name of Johann Evangelist Brandl, born in Regensburg in 1760.  Even if he never actually belonged to the leading lights of the musical avant-garde, Brandl was nevertheless in close touch with prominent musicians at the Bruchsal court of the Bishop of Speyer. They helped him when the bishop was forced to flee the invading French in 1792, who finally conquered Bruchsal seven years later. Brandl’s new place of work became the Francophile court of the Grand Duke of Baden. There, until his death in 1837, he composed numerous works for his beloved bassoon – including the Quintet, Op. 63.

When looking for the role models of the influential "Mannheim School", one often comes across the name of Johann Evangelist Brandl, born in Regensburg in 1760. Explore this contrast in a program that highlights why both composers remain impressive today, led by harpsichordist Steven Devine, best known for playing with the critically-acclaimed Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Susan Conant, specializes in playing chamber music on recorders, flutes and whistles. Her musical journey spans across ages and cultures as evidenced by her three current Charleston, SC based ensembles; Spartina Consort (Early Music), Porto Seguro, (Brazilian music) and Zephyr (Celtic). She has shared her chamber music in a variety of venues and concert series including Piccolo Spoleto, the Charleston Library Society, Forte Jazz Lounge, North Charleston Arts Festival, Brazil Fest at I’on, Fripp Island Friends of Music, Northern Illinois University, Morton Arboretum, the College of Charleston, McClellanville Arts Council, and UUC Santa Fe. Conant has played with the Charleston Symphony for Harry Potter Live #3, The Christmas Revels, Charleston Pro Musica and the Taylor Festival’s Celtic Christmas. Also a composer, arranger and conductor, Conant is a former Music Director for the Unitarian Church in Charleston and for the UU Society of Geneva, IL. She has published two discs of her own chamber compositions – Lowcountry Sojourn (2013) and A New Leaf (2006). She is also recorded on the Taylor Festival Choir’s, “Sing We Now of Christmas” (2010, MSR Classics) for which she arranged the title cut. Conant’s compositions dig into her roots including English and American folk music from summers growing up at Pinewoods Camp, Early Music studies under Susan Zimmerman and classical flute at the New England Conservatory with Claude Monteaux.

Historical Performance Concerto Competition Winners' Concert

Beethoven was drawn to characters, fictional or real, who dared to stand up against injustices. Egmont in Goethe's drama of the same name was one such fictional but clear role model for Beethoven. In the overture, he encapsulates the drama, from the slow introduction through tragedy to a triumphant conclusion. The orchestra is led by the young and increasingly renowned Czech conductor Jirí Rozen, making his debut with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra.

An exciting journey of discovering the wide-ranging world of the Baroque era: the programme features a hand-picked selection of chamber music from the 17th and 18th centuries, some of which are rarely heard works filled with virtuosity, colours and melodic expression. And there is a marvellous foray into some of the European courts of this era. The influence of the Dresden court lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss, for example, reached far beyond Saxony: Wilhelmine, the music-loving Margravine of Bayreuth, also arranged for his harmonious compositions to be performed in her palace. When Telemann presented his series of quartets at the royal court in Versailles, the musical world there was at his feet – as the elegant and engaging dance movements were his fervent homage to the most elegant court in Europe at the time. It was said of Karl Kohaut that he was a »must-hear« when visiting Vienna. He was regarded as a gifted player of the lute in Haydn’s circle, but also composed himself – often with a preference for folk idioms. Michel Lambert was not only famous as a singer in the Parisian salons in the age of Louis XIV, but was also widely popular for his marvellous melodies, which were published widely as instrumental works. At the end of the Baroque picture book, we hear wonderful variations on the »Follia« tune, a stirring dance in triple metre that was a popular hit in Europe at that time: it was performed constantly in the streets, whether sung, whistled or stomped. Vivaldi’s magnificent version is a true showdown between the instruments.

»Music should touch the heart!« Giovanni Antonini is a phenomenal artist who succeeds in realising this credo of 18th century composers. The Italian conductor likes to indulge in the emotional worlds that the works tell us about, immersing himself in the effects and emotions. A musician who has his own language in the midst of all the performers, whose signature is unmistakable and who breathes a lot of fresh air. His energy is truly infectious – and when asked where he gets it from, he once replied in an interview: »I get it from the music. Even after a concert, which was exhausting and tiring, I’m always tired in a positive sense, that’s the difference. And so on the day after, I’m ready for a new musical adventure. And of course there is also my great love for music!« However, he is not only a fiery spirit, but also a sharp-witted analyst. He is particularly well-known for his innovative and sophisticated approaches to the baroque and classical repertoire – and we love to regularly and intensively explore this historical approach with him. This time he takes us into Mozart's adventure world: his last two symphonies are on the programme. In between, there is another »musical adventure«, which Giovanni Antonini has rarely done recently, but which he is happy to do with us: as an accomplished recorder player, he himself takes on the solo part in Telemann’s original instrumental concerto. Our audience is in for a wonderful musical stroll through the colours and temperaments of the 18th century – where the point was always to »delight the connoisseurs and lovers of music«.
