The program also includes Jean-Philippe Rameau’s Concerto No. 5 in D Minor from "Pièces de clavecin en concerts," a work that blends the harpsichord with other instruments in a richly textured dialogue. Additionally, the Trio Sonata No. 1 in G Minor by Elisabeth Claude Jacquet de la Guerre offers a glimpse into the innovative spirit of one of the few prominent female composers of the Baroque era.

Under the artistic direction of Julian Perkins, who will also perform on the harpsichord, the ensemble features Toma Iliev on violin and Joanna Blendulf on violoncello. Together, they bring to life the intricate and expressive qualities of these Baroque masterpieces, inviting listeners to embark on a journey through an exotic musical landscape.

Even though Leipzig did not enjoy the same illustrious reputation of Dresden, Venice, Paris, or Vienna during the Baroque era, it was a burgeoning musical scene would eventually be recognized over time because of two composers who started and continued a tradition of performing secular music for the benefit of its townsfolk with ensembles consisting mainly of college students. These two composers were none other than Georg Philipp Telemann and Johann Sebastian Bach. And this chamber orchestra that performed under them was known as Collegium Musicum.

In Passions Revealed, the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra takes you on a journey that dives into the rich, evocative, and stirring emotions found in works by Fasch, Locatelli, Vivaldi, Marais, Telemann, and Bach. 

The program explores a wide variety of colours and affects. We open with a rousing Fasch overture that conveys confidence and fearlessness. The strings are then featured in a hauntingly beautiful and wistful concerto grosso by Locatelli. A restless but ultimately hopeful journey through the night, from dusk to dawn, follows in Vivaldi's programmatic La Notte. We close the first half with a gorgeous celebration of love in the chaconne from Marais’s opera Alcyone.

Jean-Baptiste Lully was a French composer, conductor, and dancer who worked in the court of Louis the XIV. Despite his venerable status as an artist, Lully is perhaps best known for his death: He struck himself in the foot with a long conducting staff (this was before conductors waived batons, and instead would keep the orchestra in time by banging a large staff on the floor) and subsequently died of the infected wound.

This concert features the exceptional talents of Nicholas DiEugenio, Daniel Lee, Isabelle Seula Lee, and Beth Wenstrom, who will lead us through Vivaldi's beloved concerti with their solo performances.

In addition to the musical feast, the event will showcase contemporary photography that evokes the essence of the seasons, captured by four talented NYC-based photographers. This unique blend of visual and auditory art promises to be a captivating experience for all attendees.

Please note that in-person tickets for this concert are currently sold out, but interested patrons are encouraged to visit the box office in person on the day of the event to join a waitlist for any cancellations. For those unable to secure a ticket, a virtual concert experience will be available 2-4 weeks after the performance, ensuring everyone has the opportunity to enjoy this magnificent presentation.

The concert will last approximately 70-80 minutes and will be performed without an intermission, offering a seamless journey through the seasons. Join us for an enchanting evening of baroque music at Paxton House with the performance of "Music at Paxton: Ensemble Hesperi" on the 23rd of July, from 7:30 pm to 9:30 pm. This unique concert will take place in the stunning Picture Gallery, offering a perfect backdrop for an immersive musical journey.

Ensemble Hesperi, a dynamic and innovative London-based period ensemble, is renowned for their lively and enticing performances that bring the early 1700s London music scene to life. The concert will feature a rich program including Handel Trio Sonatas in F major and B minor, Playford's "Grimstock" and "Bobbing Joe" from The English Dancing Master, Purcell's Sonatas of Three Parts, No.1 in G minor, Telemann Trio Sonata in G minor, and Oswald's Sonata on Scots Tunes "Airs for Autumn", among others. The ensemble will also perform additional music by Blow, Sammartini, Elisabetta de Gambarini, and Robert Bremner, reflecting the craze for Scottish music that swept the English capital.

The Sebastians perform Bach’s “little” Mass in G major, BWV 236, in a performance with forces matching Bach’s own proportions—oboes, bassoon, strings, and continuo, plus a stunning vocal quartet who perform as soloists and chorus: Clara Rottsolk, Wee Kiat Chia, James Reese, and Tyler Duncan. Between the movements of the mass, we will include works by Bach’s contemporaries, also simulating the way the movements of the mass would have been separated by parts of the church service.
