Pianist

Die schöne Müllerin (“The Fair Maid of the Mill”) is a landmark song cycle composed by Franz Schubert in 1823. Based on 20 poems by German lyric poet Wilhelm Müller, it tells the story of a young wanderer’s unrequited love and tragic demise. The distinguished conductor, pianist, and musicologist Joshua Rifkin, Lafayette College’s 2023-24 Pesky Artist-in-Residence, is joined by his longtime collaborator, Frank Kelley, to perform this poignant work.
The expressive weight of Die schöne Müllerin, widely considered the epitome of lied repertoire, is shared equally by pianist and singer.
