Concluding the season, the GPO is honored to premiere Composer-in-Residence Dylan Fixmer’s Concerto for Electric Cello - a three movement work for solo electric cello and symphony orchestra commissioned by GPO Principal cellist Becky Kutz Osterberg. This new work is based on Becky's experiences navigating lifelong depression and depicts sets of characteristics that embody her emotional journey. Drawing from Becky's first-hand experiences and scientific research on mental illness and trauma psychology, this piece is dedicated to those facing these challenges, shedding light on the often silent agony of navigating mental health issues.

Rachmaninoff had already been living with his wife on Lake Lucerne in his newly built villa "Senar" (Sergei & Natalia Rachmaninoff) for four years when he composed his Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini in 1934. The theme comes from the last of the 24 Caprices for solo violin, which are so technically tricky that they contributed significantly to Paganini's reputation as a devil's violinist. The curious list of composers who have been inspired by Paganini's theme ranges from Brahms and Liszt to Szymanowski and Blacher to Lutosławski and Andrew Lloyd Webber. Rachmaninoff uses the theme as the starting material for a series of 24 variations with introduction and coda, ingeniously combining the structure of the work with that of a three-movement concerto. Adaptations of the opulent 18th Variation (in the rare key of D flat major) can be found in films as well as in pop songs and video games. In the seventh variation, Rachmaninoff also introduces the "Dies irae" - a cross-reference that appears like a signature in many of his works and also recurs at the end of the variations.

Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody, a brilliant showpiece for virtuoso pianist, is probably the most admired of his works. An exercise of both compositional and pianistic prowess, it embodies his late style at its brilliant and witty best and has one of the world’s most irresistible melodies. Moments of Romantic outpourings hurtle towards a typical grandiose conclusion, but at the last moment it wittily becomes a whisper and ends impishly. Although his earlier works had shown flashes of what was to come, the Eroica was Beethoven’s first truly Romantic composition. It opens with two staggering chords that announce to the world the arrival of a new talent, a forceful personality, a man never to be forgotten. From that point on Beethoven was no mere composer – he was a creator of monuments. Strauss’ tone poem is a blend of sonata form and rondo. With Don Juan’s swashbuckling theme and the fountain of semi-quavers that opens the work, it exemplifies his exhilarating orchestral virtuosity.

Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann preceded Amy Beach, paving the way for the tonal worlds of the 20th Century Romantics (like Rachmaninoff and Beach). Sergei Rachmaninoff and Amy Beach were contemporaries, and I find that their music pairs together well. The program will begin with Gustav Holst's "On this day earth shall ring," for chorus, string quartet, piano and handbells. Down East Singers will perform selected movements from Sergei Rachmaninoff's "Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom," a work that was suppressed by the Soviet government for seventy years and brought back to Russia by conductor Anthony Antolini in 1988. 

Halcyon will perform works by Philip Glass, Hildegard von Bingen and Erik Satie to accompany Luke Fatora's documentary film "Lime City" celebrating the city of Rockland's maritime history.

The concert will conclude with Ralph Vaughan Williams's "Fantasia on Christmas Carols," with tenor soloist Hayden Sears, Down East Singers, handbells, Jennifer McIvor, pianist, Halcyon string players Josie Davis, Luke Fatora, Colin Wheatley and Matthew Smith.

Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto begins with a brief murmuring from the orchestra and the simplest of introductions of the main theme from the piano. A mood of dark, impassioned lyricism prevails throughout which builds with urgent expressiveness before reaching an almost delirious close. With its massive chords, cascading and leaping octaves, high-speed runs and wide-spaced, busily embellished textures, it demands a pianist with strength, dexterity, control, and stamina – and big hands! Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has charmed audiences over the years with its range of gorgeous music and romantic imagery. There is a wonderfully vivid, pictorial quality to his colourful music. From the elegant Waltz of the Flowers to the witty Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Dance of the Reed Flutes, the score is a feast of wonderful melodies. The music tinkles in the memory like a lost music box – enchanting for young and old alike.

BSO: Nutcracker Magic

George Gershwin made history with his "Rhapsody in Blue": He wanted nothing less than to give his fellow countrymen their own, American music, beyond all ethnic and cultural boundaries - and initially even had the title "American Rhapsody" in mind. Blue notes and jazz can be heard in this work, as can the hustle and bustle of New York; the audience was absolutely thrilled after the premiere. Gershwin's hit actually has three big cadenzas for piano, and at the premiere the composer himself took on the solo part. In the 4th Philharmonic Concert, the young Lithuanian Martynas Levickis will play it on the accordion in his debut with the Duisburg Philharmonic. A lyrical theme in "Rhapsody in Blue" is somewhat reminiscent of Sergei Rachmaninoff, whose "Symphonic Dances" are on the program afterwards. However, it is not really exuberant, but the composer quotes from his "Isle of the Dead" and plays the "Dies Irae" from the Last Judgement several times. Cheerful and reminiscent of Haydn's classical musical language, the concert begins with Sergei Prokofiev's 1st Symphony, conducted by Delyana Lazarova, who has already performed on the concert stage with Martynas Levickis and is also making her debut with the Philharmonic.

The UMD Wind Orchestra pays tribute to American conductor and arranger Donald Hunsberger. From 1962 until his retirement in 2002, he served as professor of conducting and ensembles at Eastman School of Music. Aspen alum Zlatomir Fung is the youngest cellist to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Only 25, he’ll be joined by 23 year-old Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, who stepped in last-minute to wow the Aspen audience in a recital in 2023. Hear these two rising stars in Clara Schumann’s dreamlike Nocturne, composed when she was only 15. Two solo performances follow, with Yun playing the one-movement Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata of Litszt, inspired by a Victor Hugo poem. Fung will be showcased in Britten’s first solo cello suite, which hearkens back to the techniques and textures employed in Bach’s cello suites. Following intermission, the two reunite for Rachmaninoff’s last chamber work, his gorgeous and deeply moving cello sonata.

Fresh off a celebration of Rachmaninoff’s 150th anniversary, Kern performs his Second Piano Concerto — a success from its inception, this memorable concerto’s themes that have been borrowed by countless films, Sinatra songs, and more. After intermission, Colorado Public Radio’s Kabin Thomas narrates the outlandish tale of Peer Gynt, a hopeless yarn-spinner who lies and sneaks his way through many misadventures and ultimately learns his lesson. Audiences will immediately recognize Grieg’s music, including the unforgettable “In the Hall of the Mountain King” and “Morning Mood.” Guest conductor Gemma New leads this crowd-pleasing program, which opens with Vivian Fung’s inspirational Prayer.

Experience the magic of a student-mentor relationship when Daniil Trifonov teams up with his former teacher, Armenian-American pianist Sergei Babayan. Topping off the program is Rachmaninoff's youthful 1st Suite for Two Pianos, with its thrilling finale reminiscent of tolling bells and Russian liturgical chant. The more mature 2nd Suite is full of rich melodies which evoke Rachmaninoff’s popular 2nd Piano Concerto, a tour de force sure to display the virtuosity and almost telepathic connection between these two pianistic powerhouses.

The evening's repertoire includes beloved works by Giacomo Puccini, such as "Quando me’n vo’" from La bohème and "Sole e amore," alongside pieces by Sergei Rachmaninoff, including the ethereal "Vocalise" from 14 Romances, Op. 34. The program will also feature compositions by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Maurice Ravel, Georges Bizet, Jules Massenet, and Léo Delibes, promising a rich tapestry of musical textures and styles.
