In 2021 we did the same, with Alim Beisembayev. From 1962 until his retirement in 2002, he served as professor of conducting and ensembles at Eastman School of Music. Aspen alum Zlatomir Fung is the youngest cellist to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Only 25, he’ll be joined by 23 year-old Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, who stepped in last-minute to wow the Aspen audience in a recital in 2023. Hear these two rising stars in Clara Schumann’s dreamlike Nocturne, composed when she was only 15. Two solo performances follow, with Yun playing the one-movement Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata of Litszt, inspired by a Victor Hugo poem. Fung will be showcased in Britten’s first solo cello suite, which hearkens back to the techniques and textures employed in Bach’s cello suites. Following intermission, the two reunite for Rachmaninoff’s last chamber work, his gorgeous and deeply moving cello sonata.

James Gaffigan & Seong-Jin Cho

Sergei Rachmaninoff always wanted to compose a ballet but never had the opportunity. Instead, later in life, he wrote a set of three colourful symphonic dances.  Ravel originally composed La valse as a ballet, but it was considered undanceable. He published it anyway with a few descriptive phrases like “glimpses of waltzing couples,” “an immense hall,” “progressively brighter,” until finally “chandelier bursts forth.” Avner Dorman describes his concerto for piano composed in 2022 as “a work that expresses extreme emotions and sudden changes, from the depth of despair to complete ecstasy.”

Amsterdam’s historic Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra performs back-to-back concerts with its incoming chief conductor Klaus Mäkelä, one of the music world’s brightest rising stars. The program opens with a US premiere by the orchestra’s composer in residence, Pulitzer Prize–winning American composer Ellen Reid. World-renowned violinist Lisa Batiashvili, described by London’s The Times as “the complete musician,” joins as soloist in Prokofiev’s Violin Concerto No. 2. The second half of the concert features one of Rachmaninoff’s most expansive achievements: the lush and passionate Second Symphony.

In 1909, Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873-1943) traveled on his first US tour. He brought along a newly written piece—Piano Concerto No. 3 in D minor. He was the soloist at the premiere in New York, not knowing that he would emigrate to the US nine years later after the Russian Revolution.
