Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto begins with a brief murmuring from the orchestra and the simplest of introductions of the main theme from the piano. A mood of dark, impassioned lyricism prevails throughout which builds with urgent expressiveness before reaching an almost delirious close. With its massive chords, cascading and leaping octaves, high-speed runs and wide-spaced, busily embellished textures, it demands a pianist with strength, dexterity, control, and stamina – and big hands! Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker has charmed audiences over the years with its range of gorgeous music and romantic imagery. There is a wonderfully vivid, pictorial quality to his colourful music. From the elegant Waltz of the Flowers to the witty Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy and the Dance of the Reed Flutes, the score is a feast of wonderful melodies. Aspen alum Zlatomir Fung is the youngest cellist to win First Prize at the International Tchaikovsky Competition. Only 25, he’ll be joined by 23 year-old Canadian pianist Tony Siqi Yun, who stepped in last-minute to wow the Aspen audience in a recital in 2023. Hear these two rising stars in Clara Schumann’s dreamlike Nocturne, composed when she was only 15. Two solo performances follow, with Yun playing the one-movement Après une lecture du Dante: Fantasia quasi Sonata of Litszt, inspired by a Victor Hugo poem. Fung will be showcased in Britten’s first solo cello suite, which hearkens back to the techniques and textures employed in Bach’s cello suites. Following intermission, the two reunite for Rachmaninoff’s last chamber work, his gorgeous and deeply moving cello sonata.

Having fallen in love with the piano at a young age, Teave's journey through music took her from Chile to the Cleveland Institute of Music and then to Berlin, where she honed her craft before embarking on tours across Europe and Asia. Upon returning to Easter Island, she established a free school of music, offering the island's youth access to high-quality classical and traditional Polynesian musical experiences.

The program for the afternoon promises a rich tapestry of sounds, featuring works that span from ancestral Rapa Nui compositions by José Miguel Tobar and Alejandro Arevalo's "Suite Rapa Nui," to classics by Johann Sebastian Bach, Frédéric Chopin, Franz Liszt, and Sergei Rachmaninoff. James Gaffigan & Seong-Jin Cho

Sergei Rachmaninoff always wanted to compose a ballet but never had the opportunity. Instead, later in life, he wrote a set of three colourful symphonic dances.  Ravel originally composed La valse as a ballet, but it was considered undanceable. He published it anyway with a few descriptive phrases like “glimpses of waltzing couples,” “an immense hall,” “progressively brighter,” until finally “chandelier bursts forth.” Avner Dorman describes his concerto for piano composed in 2022 as “a work that expresses extreme emotions and sudden changes, from the depth of despair to complete ecstasy.”
