The question of the authenticity of Mozart's Sinfonia concertante for wind instruments has been discussed for decades without any convincing result. This plays no role for either the audience or the four soloists from the ranks of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra - either way, the Sinfonia concertante is a masterpiece of wind literature. With the tender, lyrical "Siegfried Idyll", Richard Wagner gave his young wife Cosima a personal birthday present. Opera lovers will recognize leitmotifs from Wagner's music drama "Siegfried". Nathalie Stutzmann also presents a rarity: "Lachrimae antiquae" comes from a collection of lamentations by the Renaissance composer John Dowland. Robert Schumann did not look back all the way to the Renaissance, but at least to the Baroque period when composing his 2nd Symphony. His intensive engagement with the works of Johann Sebastian Bach was reflected in the work.

Ring Cycle: Siegfried

Repelled by the dispassion of the Wartburg society of minnesingers, Tannhäuser, a singer-knight, removes to the interior of the Venusberg in search of fulfilment. Eventually his longing for Elisabeth leads him to leave again. Back at the Wartburg castle, Tannhäuser takes part in a singing contest whose theme is the nature of love, but when he sings that love is ideally about sensual satisfaction, he is cast out and sent to Rome to seek papal absolution. He returns from Rome without the hoped-for indulgence and resolves to return to the Venusberg. Then a miracle occurs and he finds redemption after all.

Mendelssohn conceived his ‘Scottish’ Symphony at twilight in Edinburgh, as he wandered the ruins of Holyrood Abbey: what follows is a sweeping musical drama of mist-covered moors and warring clans. Wagner’s Overture to Rienzi is even more over the top: a rip-roaring musical swashbuckler inspired by a tale of bloody rebellion amid the ruins of Rome. You simply have to hear it! The band's farewell concert on this beautiful stage requires ravishing music and a fantastic soloist. The Danish opera star Brit-Tone Müllertz, who is world-renowned on the opera stage, will enchant the audience with arias from the most beloved works in opera and operetta literature. Livgarden's Music Corps will also deliver exuberant waltzes, tight marches and soft sounds from Baermann's Adagio with clarinetist Martin Kejser. The concert is led by conductor Giordano Bellincampi, who has served as artistic director of the Livgardens Music Corps during this period when Stærekassen has been the home of the music corps.

Sounds of nature meet music of love: a festive Wagner evening featuring the glorious Good Friday Music from Parsifal and the second act of Tristan und Isolde. This Second Act is itself an opera within an opera: a never-ending love duet, performed here by a dream couple of Wagnerian singing, Jonas Kaufmann and Finnish soprano Camilla Nylund. And if you’ve always wondered why Wagner's music never seems to come to an end, it is clear from this love duet. Its enormous length allows the composer to explore the feeling of love like a landscape. The fact that Wagner's characters are heroes heightens our awareness of the armor they have to cast off.

The most triumphal lyrical scenes amidst the Bernese Oberland ... now, that’s a rare spectacle! Also, we get to see a stellar cast led by Wagner experts Camilla Nylund and Jonas Kaufmann, both currently scaling the peaks of their careers. Kaufmann, who dazzled audiences in the title role of Tannhäuser at the 2023 Salzburg Festival, had previously mesmerised the audience with the second act of Tristan und Isolde in concertante performances in Boston and New York’s Carnegie Hall in 2018. Jonas Kaufmann knows exactly what resonates in Wagner’s world today. Starting off in the Gstaad Festival Tent and later moving to the Festspielhaus Baden-Baden (a regular venue for the Gstaad Festival Orchestra), the tenor unfolds the profound tension between heaven and earth: the longing for love and yearning for death. Each performance, scheduled at 1:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 3:00 pm, and 4:00 pm, will showcase the timeless compositions of Johann Sebastian Bach, providing a moving backdrop to your wine tasting journey.

At 6:30 pm, join Robert Rex, the winemaker, for "A Symphony of Flavors," a guided wine tasting and talk. The 75th anniversary season comes to an overpowering conclusion with one of the most spectacular and moving acts in all of opera, the finale of Wagner’s Die Walküre. You’ll immediately recognize the iconic Ride of the Valkyries which opens the act. The eight Valkyries are the products of the god Wotan’s affair with the earth’s wisdom goddess Erda. Their job is to carry slain heroes to the afterlife in Valhalla on their flying horses. At the beginning of the act, Wotan’s favorite daughter Brünnhilde is missing. She finally appears, but not with a fallen warrior. Instead, it’s Sieglinde, whom Wotan had fathered with a wolf along with her twin brother Siegmund. The twins committed incest back in Act One, and now Sieglinde is pregnant with the future hero Siegfried. Wotan’s wife Fricka, goddess of marriage, didn’t approve of the situation, and pressured Wotan to arrange for Siegmund to die in Act Two. Brünnhilde tried to intervene to save Siegmund, enraging Wotan. To punish her defiance, Wotan strips Brünnhilde of her godhood and plans to put her into a magical sleep to be available to the first man who finds her. Horrified by this prospect, Brünnhilde convinces Wotan to surround her by fire so that only a brave hero can awaken her.
