The Danish String Quartet, a GRAMMY-nominated ensemble, has established itself as one of the world's premier string quartets. We begin with Michael Stern making his MSO debut as guest conductor leading Jonathan Leshnoff’s Rush for Orchestra, a driving and exciting work that builds a tremendous amount of energy throughout. Garrick Ohlsson, an audience and orchestra favorite, makes his eighth appearance with us performing Edvard Grieg’s Piano Concerto, a romantic masterpiece infused with the spirit of his Norwegian homeland. Dmitri Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5, which he humbly described as “the practical answer of a Soviet artist to justified criticism” in a subtle and bitter reaction to the Russia of Joseph Stalin, brings this concert to a close.

Ostensibly, Shostakovich’s Ninth Symphony was his tribute to Soviet victory over Nazi Germany. Under the surface, however, was a bold critique of Soviet leaders and the chaos ensuing even after the war ended. The final movement uses The Dance of the Bones (a favourite of Stalin’s), a sardonic signpost to the decreasing food supplies in post-war Russia at the time.

An intriguing combination of works written by well-known composers when they were in their twenties begins with a Debussy suite which includes Clair de lune, one of the most famous musical pieces of all time, followed by NCMF Artistic Director Clive Greensmith performing Dobrinka Tabakova’s charming arrangement of Schubert’s Arpeggione Sonata.

 

Shostakovich’s acerbic wit and seriousness are then on full display in incidental music he wrote for “the most scandalous production (of Hamlet) in the history of Shakespeare,” presented here as a theatrical collaboration with local actors.

In this performance, the Jerusalem Quartet will present a program that includes Haydn's Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 50, No. 1 Prussian, Shostakovich's Quartet No. 12 in D-Flat Major, Op. 133, and Dvořák's String Quartet in G-Major, Op. 106. Each piece showcases the quartet's ability to convey a wide range of emotions and technical prowess, making for an unforgettable musical journey.

The Jerusalem Quartet's recordings have garnered numerous awards, including the Diapason d’Or and the BBC Music Magazine Award for chamber music. This quartet from Barcelona has an exciting edge to their sound, which they will bring to masterpieces from three centuries. Vera Martinez Mehner, the powerhouse first violin, will have a big night. This Shostakovich is one of the most demanding and rewarding pieces for a quartet leader. And then she leads Beethoven's sacred "Holy Song of Thanks," the centerpiece of Beethoven's penultimate quartet. Haydn gets the first laugh with one of his brilliant, early quartets.

We’re puttin’ on the ritz with a night of musical fireworks, including Rimsky-Korsakov’s triumphant Procession of the Nobles and Grieg’s Piano Concerto, which is always an audience favorite, performed by former TSO Young Artist Competition winner, Chaeyoung Park. We will also perform, for the first time in the Topeka Symphony’s history, Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony, a deeply-moving musical portrait of life in Russia under Stalin, which has been hailed as a work encompassing both lofty principles and great artistry, and also a deep and poignant humanity.

The surging passions of César Franck’s repurposed sonata perfectly complement the lyricism, humour, and prescient unrest that infiltrate the Shostakovich that precedes it. Together with Arvo Pärt’s mesmerising distillation of stillness, the Fauré centenary is affectionately acknowledged twice-over; Dvořák dips into nostalgic reverie; and remembering childhood, too, is Sérgio Assad, whose evocative Menino was originally composed for Yo-Yo Ma and guitar duo.

Adolphus Hailstork III (April 17, 1941, Rochester, New York) is an American composer of African American, Native American and European ancestry. His works are known for blending musical ideas from the African, American and European traditions. Hailstork received his music education at Howard University, Manhattan School of Music, and Michigan State University. He currently resides in Virginia Beach, Virginia, and is the Cultural Laureate of Virginia. While his compositions employ contemporary compositional techniques, Hailstork writes in a wide variety of genres, including concert band literature, and often uses material relating to African-American traditions for inspiration. His wide span of musical compositions ranges from symphonies, opera, and a violin concerto, to “Springtime for Two Elephants” for two tubas. Hailstork was the second African-American composer ever to be featured at a Presidential Inauguration when his Fanfare on Amazing Grace was performed as part of the prelude to Joe Biden’s inauguration in January 2021. His latest cantata, A Knee on the Neck, was written in commemoration of George Floyd’s murder and premiered in 2021.

It is not unusual for composers to arrange their own chamber music works for larger ensembles. However, the character of the piece often changes fundamentally: William Walton's Sonata for String Orchestra - an arrangement of his String Quartet in A minor - is actually a concerto for string quartet and orchestra, according to the composer Christopher Palmer. Walton does not simply transfer the quartet to the larger ensemble, but plays with the alternation between solo passages reminiscent of the original ensemble and the full tutti sound.

For her renewed visit to Munich, this time in the Isarphilharmonie, Ludwig van Beethoven is the focus. The "Egmont" Overture and Beethoven's "Fifth" both address combative and heroic ideals. Shostakovich's First Cello Concerto, which begins with the D-Es-CH motif, the composer's initials translated into musical language, is about a very personal struggle and inner conflict. Karina Canellakis, who began her career as a violinist, attaches particular importance to transparency and a sense of style. The Spanish cellist Pablo Ferrández is at her side for a curious and energetic reading of these popular works of the repertoire, who is also making his debut with the Philharmonic.

Shostakovich’s Eighth Symphony dates from the darkest days of the Second World War, when making music scarcely seemed possible. He dedicated it to all victims of oppression. Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot begins a season-long celebration marking 150 years since Maurice Ravel’s birth with Concerto for the Left Hand. Composed for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm in World War I, Ravel’s concerto spans the expressive power of the whole keyboard and bubbles with dark energy. We also salute the centenary of musical powerhouse Pierre Boulez.

Valentin Uryupin feels equally at home as a conductor in the symphonic and operatic repertoire. In both areas, he has built up close artistic partnerships with orchestras and houses in recent years. In addition to debuts, he has several invitations to return to the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra Vienna, Frankfurt Opera, Teatro Regio Torino, Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, Deutsche Radiophilharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern, and the New National Theatre Tokyo, where he will conduct Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin.
