British baritone Rodney Earl Clarke captured every heart when he starred in the Halle’s Christmas Concert a couple of years ago. We couldn’t wait to bring him back, so here he is with a sack full of treats for the festive period, including operatic and Hollywood favourites, as well as some chestnut-roasting seasonal classics. Our master of ceremonies is genial conductor Stephen Bell, who’ll be taking us through a roll call of Christmas hits from Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov and heartwarming movie music from Home Alone to Frozen. And as it’s Christmas you can enjoy some good old-fashioned audience participation singing along with White Christmas and trying to keep up with the reindeer in Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride.

Local favorites Steve and Allison Martin join HSO for festive selections from The Nutcracker, Leroy Anderson’s classic Sleigh Ride, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and some of the Martins’ favorite songs, including “The Prayer,” “O Holy Night,” and “Ave Maria.”  Rounding out the family-friendly concert will be the audience favorite “Christmas Singalong,” full of well-known holiday carols! Steve and Allison are well known in West Michigan, having sung on opera stages and musical productions locally and around the country.  Allison received her Masters of Music from Michigan State University.  Steve holds a doctorate and master’s in music from Michigan State University.  He has taught at the college level and is now Director of Music and Fine Arts at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, Texas.

Under the baton of Derrick Gardner, this special concert will take place on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, at 7:30pm CDT in the stunning Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall.

Frank Foster, celebrated for his significant contributions to the Count Basie Orchestra and his leadership in forming influential jazz ensembles, left an indelible mark on the world of jazz. The Northwestern University Jazz Ensemble will honor Foster's legacy by performing a selection of his works, including iconic pieces like "Shiny Stockings," "Down for the Count," and "Blues Backstage," among others.

This event promises to be a night of rich musical exploration, celebrating the genius of Frank Foster and his impact on jazz music. Tickets are priced at $8 for the general public and $5 for students with valid ID. But, this time, along with the familiar songs such as “There’s No Business Like Show Business,” “Cheek to Cheek,” “Puttin’ on the Ritz” and “What’ll I Do?” you’ll hear some unfamiliar songs like “Marie from Sunny Italy,” “Falling Out of Love Can Be Fun” and “A Man Chases a Girl.” You’ll love hearing them all. You’re in for a treat as Rob shares these gems with you, along with the stories about these “undiscovered” treasures!

Isabel Valasek is a soprano based in Pittsburgh, PA. She is studying under Sari Gruber at Carnegie Mellon University, where she is pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Vocal Performance, a certification in Music Education and a minor in Drama. This year in Carnegie Mellon Opera, Isabel performed as Lucy in “The Telephone” by Menotti and will also be in scenes such as singing Adele in “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss II, Lucy in "The Three Penny Opera" by Kurt Weill and Idamante in “Idomeneo” by Mozart. She was previously a soloist in Carnegie Mellon University’s fully staged production of “Considering Matthew Shepard” by Craig Hella Johnson and was a cover for Despina in Mozart’s “Così fan tutte”.

Reflections on a local Christmas tradition. The ASO Christmas concert is the Symphony’s longest-running tradition, and one of Acadiana’s most cherished holiday celebrations. "The Christmas Concert”, as it has come to be known to our musicians and the community alike, is noted for combining traditional orchestral selections with popular holiday tunes, and featuring revered local guest artists and youth musicians. This year’s concert will bring together more than 100 musicians on stage, including beloved Lafayette rockstar, Marc Broussard, to perform your favorite sounds of the season. Together, we'll joyfully carry on this tradition for its 25th year.
