The 2024 Spring Gala turns the spotlight on NYCB’s future through our commitment to new work, featuring world premieres from Resident Choreographer Justin Peck and renowned choreographer Amy Hall Garner, whose work has been seen on a wide array of dance and theater stages. This celebratory event opens with George Balanchine’s Rubies, which epitomizes the distinct energy and athleticism that are hallmarks of the Company to this day.

Belles-Lettres showcases Justin Peck’s exceptional choreographic talent as he weaves together a tapestry of emotions and stories. Frank Bridge Variations embodies the sensual style Hans van Manen is known for, and Melissa Barak brings another world premiere to the stage with a work set to music by American film and tv composer Kris Bowers of When They See Us and Bridgerton fame.

With inclusion on several reviewer’s “best of the decade” lists when it was released including those of Paste, NPR, and Rolling Stone, Sufjan Stevens‘s acclaimed 2005 concept album Illinois enjoys cult status for its lush orchestrations and wildly inventive portrayal of the state’s people, landscapes, and history, complete with UFOs, zombies, and predatory wasps. This musically ambitious work, which weaves together cinematic orchestral anthems, jazz riffs, and other musical influences to explore wide-ranging narratives about blossoming queerness and self-exploration is expanded upon through a mix of live music and impressionistic choreography to revisit the beloved album’s themes of self-discovery.

Ballets from three choreographers closely associated with the Company are gathered here. Christopher Wheeldon’s Polyphonia ranks among his most distinctive and popular works, with its thrillingly spiky choreography set to the modernist music of György Ligeti. Peter Martins’s Barber Violin Concerto is the rare dance in the repertory that combines elements of both ballet and modern dance, with one couple barefoot and another sporting traditional ballet footwear. And Justin Peck’s The Times Are Racing, a galvanizingly energetic audience favorite since its debut in 2017, finds the dancers in footwear of yet another kind: sneakers.

Wheeldon + Martins + Peck

Over the course of his illustrious career, renowned composer Philip Glass conceived The Etudes as a set of solo piano works to expand his piano technique. Now amongst Glass’ most popular works, The Etudes have inspired performances and interpretations from artists worldwide. In Dancing with Glass: The Piano Etudes, five new choreographic perspectives on The Etudes will be presented alongside a performance by guest pianist Maki Namekawa, one of the world’s foremost interpreters of Glass’ music. The evening will feature works by post-modern innovator Lucinda Childs, Chanon Judson of Urban Bush Women, Justin Peck of New York City Ballet, Brazilian tap artist Leonardo Sandoval, and Los Angeles-based choreographers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber

Dancing with Glass: the Piano Etudes

The groundbreaking Complexions Contemporary Ballet celebrates its 29th season under the direction of co-founding Artistic Directors, Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson. The program includes works by guest choreographers Justin Peck, Ricardo Amarante, and Jenn Freeman. A premiere by Complexions Principal Choreographer Dwight Rhoden, set to the raw acoustic music of U2, rounds out the program. MacArthur “Genius” Fellow and celebrated poetjournalist, Aaron Dworkin will make his debut as Complexions’ Poet-in-Residence during the engagement
