This year the music world is celebrating not only Bruckner's 200th birthday, but also the 200th birthday of Bedřich Smetana. In the tragic life of the Bohemian composer, the death of his four-year-old daughter was a devastating event. The G minor piano trio, which was written immediately after the family catastrophe, is the painful expression of a grieving father. Joseph Haydn wrote not only his famous last symphonies in London, but also important chamber music. He composed the light-footed C major piano trio for the London-based German pianist Therese Jansen, who was praised for her flawless technique. A sculptor friend of the composer said of Bohuslav Martinů's first piano trio, which has the subtitle "Cinq pièces brèves", that it sounded as if it had been "carved from marble" - a description that Martinů found "very fitting". South of Prague, high above the Vltava River, stands Vyšehrad, the fortress mountain that is the subject of numerous myths and legends. Josef Suk created a special homage to Vyšehrad with his Elegy op. 23. The solemn piece served as a prelude to a tableau vivant, a "living picture" in which actors in frozen poses depicted the sunset at Vyšehrad.

“If you haven't yet heard the Pavel Haas Quartet, buckle your seat belt,” wrote NPR after the quartet’s last appearance at Carnegie Hall. The most celebrated Czech string quartet of our time, which has been called “the world’s most exciting string quartet” by London’s The Times, now returns during the 2024 Year of Czech Music celebration. The ensemble performs an all-Czech program that opens with Josef Suk’s gorgeous Meditation on an Old Czech Hymn, “St. Wenceslas.” In honor of the bicentennial of Bedřich Smetana—the quintessential Czech composer who inspired the first Year of Czech Music in 1924—the quartet performs his autobiographical String Quartet No. 1, “From My Life.” The program closes with the gripping passion and longing of Leoš Janáček’s String Quartet No. 2, “Intimate Letters.”

Dvorak's Cypresses for String Quartet and mezzo-soprano anchor this program. The piece began as a song cycle for soprano and piano. Dvorak then transcribed the music for string quartet alone. Now we hear a metamorphosis of the previous iterations which the Prazak Quartet commissioned - the songs accompanied by string quartet. If only Dvorak could hear them! It's Smetana's 200th birthday, so his second quartet. And we can't have Prazak without Janacek.

The Worthing Symphony Orchestra’s 2024/25 Season opens with a spectacular performance featuring Edward Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor, the only concerto he completed. Composed when Grieg was just 24 years old, this piece is one of his most celebrated works and a staple in the piano concerto repertoire. The concerto will be performed by Rhythmie Wong, a finalist in the 4th Sussex International Piano Competition, whose brilliant and effusive playing promises to bring sparkle and joy to Grieg’s exquisite composition.

The concert will also feature Smetana’s Overture to The Bartered Bride, a piece known for its high spirits and virtuosic orchestration, and Schumann’s Symphony No. 4 in D minor, a work that, despite its initial bewilderment to contemporary audiences, has become immensely popular in its revised form.

»I love Czech music, and I want to share what I love with other people creatively.« Jakub Hrůša once said this in an interview, and this programme is another wonderful example thereof. The pleasure of listening is also complemented by an artist from his homeland: Ivo Kahánek is the soloist in the much too rarely performed piano concerto by Dvořák – the very composer who is always close to our Chief Conductor's heart, as he put it: »This music is like mother’s milk for me.« The symphonic piano concerto from 1876, packed with folklore, flourishes from the way the pianist and orchestra toss the thematic balls to and fro in a captivating and supple way. Before this, there is a likewise endearing piece to set the mood and thus even a double anniversary: Smetana was born in the Czech Republic in 1824 and the premiere of his comic opera »The Two Widows« took place in Prague in 1874 under his baton – a work that is set somewhere in Bohemia on an aristocratic estate and features a sparkling overture. Finally, we delve into the world of Beethoven, whose compositions are (not only) part of Jakub Hrůša’s core repertoire. Schumann described his Symphony No. 4 from 1806 as a »slender Greek maiden between two Northland giants«, as it was composed between the courageous »Eroica« and the glorious Fifth. It is a friendly work with enchanting melodies, as Beethoven was madly in love with a young noblewoman at the time – which is why a contemporary commented: »While writing this symphony, his heart must have nearly burst with joy.«

On the heels of her stunning success in 2023, Alevtina Ioffe returns to Benaroya Hall to lead the Seattle Symphony in a sparkling program that celebrates opera, dance, and all the rapture and mishaps of courtship. The Bartered Bride Overture is a hilarious romp for orchestra. »This must be love!« These words were heard at the joyous announcement that the journey with Jakub Hrůša will continue for several more wonderful years. And he sums it up perfectly, because our Chief Conductor is completely happy with his »friendly and harmonious home«: he loves the city Bamberg, the amicable atmosphere in the orchestra and the whole team behind the scenes, the magnificent hall and the enthusiastic audiences – who return his love in such a way that the concerts with him have been constantly sold out for years. And since fate has been particularly kind to this close relationship since 2016, Jakub Hrůša has fittingly included the Beethoven symphony on the programme for our season opener, with its world-famous tones revolving around the much-invoked Fatum – and about which it was said early on that it is a »living image of great passion«. This symphonic blockbuster is combined with favourites from the heart of our Chief Conductor: With compositions from his and our Bohemian homeland, which he regularly familiarises us with on our journey together. And in doing so, we are always moving on to lesser-known repertoire. Dvořák's Violin Concerto, for example, is not heard very often, even though it is in no way inferior in quality to the great Romantic concertos of his colleagues: it is »original, full of cantilenas and written for accomplished violinists« – including Isabelle Faust, whose wish it was to play the solo part with us one day. However, before that, we should first congratulate this year's birthday boy, Smetana: With his fascinating tone poem »Wallenstein's Camp«, which for Jakub Hrůša is a »fantastic opener« for concerts – which makes the piece a perfect opening for the new season themed »What we love«.

The Viano String Quartet was the First Prize Winner of the 2019 Banff International String Quartet Competition and is the String Quartet-in-Residence at the Curtis Institute of Music. Formed in 2015 at the Colburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles, the quartet has performed all over the world in venues such as Wigmore Hall, Place Flagey, Izumi Hall, Konzerthaus Berlin, and Segerstrom Center for the Arts.

The recent passing of Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho ended a brilliant career in the highest echelons of the music world. Aure, a work for violin and viola, demonstrates her mastery and originality. Danny Elfman, prolific film composer (Spider-Man, Good Will Hunting), singer, and percussionist, turns his protean talents to the Piano Quartet, with amazing results. The ravishing renegade Rebecca Clarke explores both modern concepts and ancient styles with her duo-concertante Dumka. Lastly, the autobiographical String Quartet No. 1 (“From My Life”) of Bedřich Smetana, father of Czech nationalist music, closes our season with one of the most beloved works in the chamber repertoire.

The two orchestras of the University of Arizona will share the Crowder Hall stage for their final performances of the 2023-24 season. The evening will cohere around two themes:  journey and homeland. The UArizona Philharmonic begins with Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage Overture, inspired by two short works of the German Romantic poet, Goethe.  Smetana’s vivid and colorful depiction of the Moldau River, a symbol of Czech national pride, follows. We follow the river on its journey from the tiniest mountain trickle all the way downstream to a triumphant expanse of a broad river. After the intermission, the Arizona Symphony offers Symphony No. 2 by the Finnish composer, Jean Sibelius. In this masterpiece many hear a call to Finns’ ethnic independence and national pride, in response to Russia’s imperial threat. The symphony is a symbolic journey from bucolic innocence through conflict and struggle to assert a national identity, culminating in a broad, triumphant statement of Finnish national pride.

The season concludes with Anna Geniushene, 2022 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition Silver Medalist, performing Rachmaninoff’s last work for piano and orchestra, featuring both astonishing virtuoso passages and Rachmaninoff ’s best-known melody. Brahms’ Fourth and last symphony has been called “one of the supreme creative acts of the Romantic era” and is fraught with tension between lyrical beauty, intense drama, and subdued melancholy.

Close out Women’s History Month and join us as conductor Anna Rakitina and violinist Sirena Huang make their debut on our stage. Huang, an international competition gold medalist, performs Dvořák’s Violin Concerto, inspired by traditional Czech dances and sure to be felt in every limb. Sibelius’ First Symphony is consuming, closing with the passionate Quasi una fantasia (“Like a Fantasy”). Also featuring Smetana’s Šárka—based on the Czech legend of an uprising of women called “The Maiden’s War”—this performance is a testament to all that women can do.

Controversy or conundrum? Or both? The centrepiece of this concert is Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. This music walks a tightrope between artistic integrity and political acceptance from Stalin. The piece wavers between despair and parody – heart-rending strings, bleak emotional landscapes, triumphant brass. Compliance or defiance? It’s up to you to decide. National pride bursts out of Smetana’s tone poem, Vltava. Bohemia’s great river gets a cinematic makeover as we travel from its source to the city of Prague, by way of his beloved Czech countryside (passing mermaids bathed in moonlight, a wedding party, and the St John Rapids on the way). Later, we visit the sound of pastoral America with the distinctive voice of Julia Perry, a cosmopolitan composer who fuses the classical style with the sounds of her African American heritage. Contralto Jess Dandy returns to perform one of Perry’s most cherished scores, her Stabat Mater.

Smetana, Prokofiev, two thrilling debuts and a Minnesota Orchestra first all at once! Conductor Ruth Reinhardt and saxophonist Steven Banks, a 2022 Avery Fisher Career Grant recipient, make their debuts with the Minnesota Orchestra to showcase Billy Childs’ recently premiered Diaspora, a concerto for saxophone and orchestra. The work co-commissioned by the Orchestra highlights Black experiences in America, with inspiration from poets including Langston Hughes and Maya Angelou. Then: romance, drama and intrigue capture the evening with a suite from Prokofiev’s gripping ballet score.

The Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra proudly presents the Young Artists Series, a showcase of exceptional young talent set to enchant audiences with two performances in early February 2024. The series kicks off on February 3rd at 7:00 pm at the Rancho Campana High School Performing Arts Center, followed by a matinee on February 4th at 3:00 pm at the First United Methodist Church Ventura. These concerts offer a unique opportunity to experience the virtuosity of young musicians in a program that includes both beloved classics and lesser-known masterpieces.

General admission tickets are available for advanced purchase online at $20, with suggested donations welcomed at the door. In a gesture to encourage the next generation of music lovers, students and kids are granted free admission. The program features a rich selection of works, including "The Moldau" by Bedřich Smetana, a symphonic poem that paints a musical portrait of the river's journey through Bohemia, and Camille Saint-Saëns' "Cello Concerto No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33," a piece celebrated for its expressive range and technical demands, performed by the talented 18-year-old cellist Kaleb Chavez. Also on the program is Albert Franz Doppler's "Fantaisie pastorale hongroise," showcasing the flute's lyrical and virtuosic capabilities in the hands of Eileen Zhang, a senior at Newbury Park High School.

Further highlights include Beethoven's "Piano Concerto No. 2 in B-Flat Major, Op. 19," with Lori Qian at the piano, and his "Piano Concerto No. 5 in E flat Major, Op. 73," featuring Benjamin Chung. The program also includes Maurice Ravel's "Tzigane," a rhapsody for violin and orchestra that captures the essence of Romani music, performed by violinist Mia Eddy.

Artistic Director KuanFen Liu emphasizes the importance of nurturing young musicians and music patrons alike, stating, "Every young musician possesses a unique artistic voice, we must create a welcoming environment to help nurture both serious young musicians and music patrons. This is essential to the human condition."
