You know John Williams from the movies. But there's another side to America's most iconic living composer. Williams' Tuba Concerto* is a revelation: rollicking, adventurous, and proof that the tuba can do things you never imagined. Nashville Symphony principal tubist Chandler Currier takes the spotlight. Around that centerpiece, the evening opens with Dobrinka Tabakova's Orpheus' Comet, a brilliant five-minute burst of energy rooted in a 400-year-old melody from Monteverdi's opera, and Smetana's The Moldau, a river journey through the Bohemian countryside written by a composer who was completely deaf.

The speculations about whether Libuše is Bedřich Smetana’s most mature work within the context of his opera oeuvre, or even within the context of Czech opera in general, whether and how it can stand its ground as against the airiness of The Bartered Bride, the lyricism and absorptive power of Dvořák’s Rusalka, or the emotion and drama of Leoš Janáček’s operas, do not result in definitive conclusions – it will always depend on the angle from which Libuše and any other renowned Czech opera is viewed.

The piano trio has long offered composers a direct and personal means of expression, and this program brings together three works that reveal the form from different perspectives. Beethoven’s Piano Trio in E-flat major, Op. 1, No. 1, shows a young composer already expanding the scope of the piano trio, giving each instrument a distinct role and shaping music that moves beyond convention. Czech composer Bedřich Smetana wrote his G-minor Piano Trio during a period of profound personal loss, and its shifting moods give the work a deeply human intensity. Fellow Czech composer Antonín Dvořák’s “Dumky” Trio closes the program.

They bring two remarkable works to life, opening with Smetana’s Piano Trio in G minor, written as a memorial to the Czech composer’s young daughter, and Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio in A minor, an impassioned elegy for the life of his late friend and frank critic, Nikolai Rubinstein.

When 18-year-old Yunchan Lim won the 2022 Van Cliburn Competition with Rachmaninoff’s Third Piano Concerto, conductor Marin Alsop had tears in her eyes. The jury was no less moved by what they had just heard. Here was someone who simply played differently: powerful and tender, mature and electrifying at the same time, as juror Stephen Hough put it. His colleague Jean-Efflam Bavouzet admitted in astonishment: “I was simply speechless.” The young Korean’s career took off like a rocket afterward — despite the fact that he avoids all showmanship and lives solely for the music, like a priest for God. He now makes his Lucerne Festival debut with Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major, a work that shifts between Basque folk color and Mozartian elegance. It promises to be an event. The Czech Philharmonic will partner with him and bookend his appearance with two signature works from their homeland. Chief Conductor Semyon Bychkov will open the evening with the quintessential Czech classic, Bedřich Smetana’s world-famous Vltava. And after intermission comes Antonín Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony, arguably his most heroic.

Smetana and the librettist Karel Sabina masterfully mocked all those who expected the “national opera” to be an idyllic picture of the Czech countryside, with its inhabitants being virtuous and governed by high morals. The Bartered Bride is thus far more humorous than “national”. Nonetheless, its humour is precisely of the type Czechs so love, and hence Smetana’s opera, abounding in irony, scathing, occasionally even cynical, wit, as well as tenderness and simple joie de vivre, has ultimately become “national” in the best sense of the word ...

The Great Classical Music

Audiences know the Quatuor Modigliani well, and here they perform two gems from their repertoire, one of them a rarity by Smetana. It is customary to divide Beethoven's output, and especially his string quartets, into three successive periods. Op. 18 No. 6, on this program, is the last of the first period and brilliantly shows how Beethoven takes up the form Haydn left him and fills it with a lyricism unknown before him. The Scherzo, shaken by syncopations, and the final Allegro, introduced by a stunning Adagio titled La malinconia, are pages of unprecedented beauty. As for Smetana's First Quartet, which sent Liszt into raptures, it evokes, as its title indicates, different ages of life that Smetana described in a letter: the arrival of destiny, the joy of living, romantic passion, and national pride. A program one might call Romantic, but it is easy to forget that while surrendering to the warmth of this music from Bohemia.

The genealogy of the piano trio is every bit as distinguished as that of the string quartet. Brahms, for instance, gave the form of the trio uniting piano and two string instruments, the singing violin and the consoling cello, three illustrious treatments. The composer himself took part, in 1882, in the premiere of his Second Trio, the one whose melodic invention is arguably the richest. The only piano trio by Smetana, by contrast, dates from 1855, the period when the unfortunate musician lost his little daughter Friederike. Yet this teeming score cannot be reduced to the poignant recitative of the first movement, which is followed through to the end by a magnificent surge mingled with folk references typical of the composer's native Bohemia.

No other work occupied Igor Stravinsky for as long a period as his "choreographic scenes from Russia," which premiered in Paris in 1923 under the title "Les Noces" (The Weddings). Initial ideas for a choral work depicting a peasant wedding date back to 1913. The composer initially searched through old folk song collections for original texts for his libretto. In a convoluted creative process, he ultimately created their musical setting with an exceptional ensemble of choir, soloists, four pianos, and percussion. "My aim was not to recreate the customs of a rural wedding," Stravinsky later explained. "Rather, I wanted to invent a kind of scenic ceremony myself..."

If one word defines this extraordinary evening with the world-renowned Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, it is passion. Under the fiery baton of Andrés Orozco-Estrada, the orchestra brings Robert Zuidam’s Orewoet – a contemporary work steeped in ardent desire – and Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 9 ‘From the New World’ to life. The Middle Dutch term orewoet, meaning ‘passion,’ lies at the heart of Zuidam’s evocative composition. In contrast, Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony interweaves folk melodies and grand American vistas with a poignant longing for his Bohemian homeland, creating a universally emotional masterpiece. In 1874, Bedřich Smetana had a great idea: he planned a cycle of symphonic poems with which he wanted to pay tribute to his native Czech Republic. No sooner had the decision been made than a devastating fate befell him: within a few months, Smetana lost his hearing. His despair is great – but his will to assert himself as a composer is even greater. And so he set to work writing the symphonic poem Vyšehrad. According to legend, the hill beneath this Prague castle rampart is the seat of Princess Libuše, the progenitor of the Czech nation. Smetana tells this story with two harps – as if the medieval bard Lumír were singing his eternal song. The second piece in the cycle, The Moldau, is one of the most famous works not only by Smetana, but in classical music in general. A portrait of the Bohemian Amazon queen Šárka is heard in the third piece: an audibly cruel creature. From Bohemian Fields and Groves reveals the beauty of the composer’s native landscape. Tábor is dedicated to the turbulent history of the Czech Republic at the time of the Reformation. In Blaník, the sixth symphonic poem, Smetana depicts the mountain of the same name, where an army of knights awaits its heroic deployment. Conductor Dennis Russell Davies, General Music Director of the Stuttgart State Opera in the 1980s, has a special affinity with all the Czech legends and places.

Seeing his love succeed against the will of the parents is pretty difficult in a rural setting. Especially when he is also considered an outsider, things do not look good with the parents-in-law, and there's a lot of money in the mix as well. But what Hans negotiates with Kezal the marriage broker, without discussing it with his beloved Marie, certainly requires a very special kind of chutzpah, and it very nearly goes all wrong – bartering his loved one to a certain person, which turns out through rhetorical trickery to be himself, only becomes evident as a good idea at the end. Which once again proves: The comedy is only a tragedy avoided at the very last minute.

Composers capture landscapes not with paints and brushes, but with instruments and notes. Today, you'll hear three of them bring to life the landscapes, traditions and myths of their homelands. Smetana's famous Má vlast (My Fatherland) is a tribute to his native Czech Republic. The colourful sounds of Vltava (The Moldau) are the most iconic, but the other symphonic poems likewise offer striking glimpses of the Bohemian landscape.

In the history of Czech music there is hardly a more iconic work than Bedřich Smetana’s set of symphonic poems My Country. After all, it is an exceptional opus not only in the Czech context. Reactions from abroad often suggest that it is something for which the Czechs and their classical music tradition are to be envied. This extraordinary, mature and imaginative composition is first and foremost a celebration of the composer’s homeland, but it can equally well be seen as a demonstration of Smetana’s mastery.

Ringing in the New Year with a concert has long been considered good form in Austria. Wolfgang Hentrich and the German String Philharmonic have already celebrated numerous successes on the Austrian concert stage and, together with the magnificent pianist Rafał Blechacz, invite you to a joint kick-off for 2026. The program is based on the motto "Con anima!" – when composers want to hear their works played this way, they desire a particularly emotional expression, a "soulful" way of making music. And this New Year's program is soulful through and through. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart returned to Salzburg from Italy with his father shortly before Christmas 1771, brimming with new ideas and impressions he had brought back from the south. He soon composed three divertimenti – pure light music – for his new employer in Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Colloredo. The first Divertimento, K. 136, became particularly famous, opening cheerfully with an elegantly floating first movement. It is no surprise that the melody is one of the best known from Mozart's pen. After this introduction, we are on our way to Paris; the city on the Seine was also the destination of the 20-year-old Frédéric Chopin when he premiered his Piano Concerto in E minor in October 1830. The concert was a musical farewell to his Polish homeland, which the composer shares with the piano virtuoso Rafał Blechacz. For more than 20 years, the young pianist has been a fixture in the international concert scene, not only as a proven Chopin expert – these joint appearances with the German String Philharmonic are already their second collaboration. And finally, a New Year's Concert can also offer a colorful bouquet: in the second half of the program, Wolfgang Hentrich and the String Philharmonic dedicate themselves to a rich selection of the most popular orchestral pieces by Vivaldi, Smetana, Dvořák and the Strauss dynasty, which provide an atmospheric round-off to the start of the year. Happy New Year!

The music almost vividly paints the course of the river - from its bubbling source to its full width as it flows into the Elbe. Hummel's Trumpet Concerto in E major is a sparkling highlight. With virtuosic runs and radiant melodies, it showcases the trumpet at its best. Playing it for us is Lucienne Renaudin Vary, a master on her instrument!
