Court Kapellmeister – a title that composers were extremely keen on until the 19th century. At the Danish court in Copenhagen in 1861, it was Niels Wilhelm Gade who was delighted to be appointed to this position. It was during this time that he composed his Piano Trio in F major op. 42 – a work in which he audibly recalled the period of his life in Leipzig, during which he was the Gewandhaus Kapellmeister and associated with Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann. Ernest Bloch, whose works are influenced by Jewish musical traditions, was both a reconciler and an admonisher of music. His second violin sonata, titled Poème mystique, is impressionistic in tone and alternates between meditative and highly expressive passages. In it, Bloch combines Jewish melodies and synagogue chants with Gregorian chorales from the early Christian church. In 1899, the string octet by the 16-year-old Felix Mendelssohn aroused the ambition of George Enescu, who was only a little older at the time. The Romanian composer maximised the sonic power of this large string ensemble with sweeping melodic arcs and intense furor.

In the touching piece Music for Fleeting Birds, written in 1977 for wind quintet, the Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks gives nature a voice, as he does in many of his other works. Some of the sounds are reminiscent of the calls of migratory birds flying away, heralding the darkness and cold of winter in Latvia. Niels Gade, one of the most important Danish composers of the Romantic period, who was a close friend of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy and Robert Schumann, follows. The latter recognized a "decidedly distinct Nordic character" in Gade’s music. His novelettes for piano trio were particularly popular among lovers of sophisticated domestic music. Carl Nielsen, one of Gade's students, whose wind quintet from 1922 forms the conclusion of the concert, was also known as the "Danish Strauss" due to his symphonic works. The Trio by Trygve Madsen, one of Norway’s most versatile contemporary composers, whose music is also influenced by jazz, blends in between the two Danish composers.

Audiences will be treated to Niels Gade's "Fantasiestucke for Clarinet and Piano, Op. 43," André Messager's "Solo de concours for Clarinet and Piano," Witold Lutosławski's "Dance Preludes for Clarinet and Piano," and Giuseppe Verdi's "Concert Fantasia on Motives from Rigoletto for Clarinet and Piano." The evening will also feature Jörg Widmann's "Funf Bruchstucke Five Fragments for Clarinet and Piano," Joseph Horovitz's "Sonatina for Clarinet and Piano," and Gioachino Rossini's "Introduction, Theme, and Variations for Clarinet and Piano."

Sebastian Manz, celebrated for his beautiful intonation and technical prowess, and Danae Dörken, known for her breathtaking technique and musical depth, promise to deliver performances that will resonate long after the final note. This event is not just a concert but an exploration of the artistry and chemistry between two of the most exciting musicians in the classical music world today.

The concert will last approximately 2 hours, including an intermission, allowing the audience to fully immerse themselves in the beauty of chamber music. Casco Phil takes you on a journey that began hundreds of years ago and introduces you to folk music from Hungary, stirring Klezmer from Romania, festive French music at the Court of Louis XIV, and much more. You will hear beautiful music from all corners of Europe as we take you on a complete 'tour musicale', from Western Europe to Central Europe and Northern Europe, and then via Eastern Europe to Southern Europe. The program takes a journey through Europe, taking as its starting point the current members of the European Union. At the same time we also take a journey in time. Music from the 16th century is discussed (by the Mechelen Philippus De Monte), but also baroque music, music from classicism and romanticism, a significant portion of folk music arranged for orchestra, and of course also a touch of accessible modern music. In this way, cultural regions are musically highlighted through the different epochs that have molded Europe into what it is today.

The Eureka Symphony season begins with a musical journey across nine centuries. George Frideric Handel’s Water Music Suite #2, composed in 1717 for a royal jaunt on the Thames, is followed by Rainbow Body, by Christopher Theofanidis, which transports a melody by the 12th century mystic composer Hildegard of Bingen to the 21st century. The evening closes with Niels Gade’s Symphony No. 3 in A minor, Opus 14. Gade is recognized as a preeminent musician of the 19th century, during what is known as the Danish Golden Age.

Niels W. Gade's violin concerto is delightful and light – a lesson in uncomplicated melodiousness. Zsolt-Tihamér Visontay is both soloist and conductor in the concert, and he also conducts Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony and leads Mendelssohn's 10th Sinfonia from the concertmaster's chair.
