This world premiere, co-commissioned by Caramoor and composed by the renowned Douglas J. Cuomo, celebrates the joy of communal music-making. Featuring Sandbox Percussion and volunteer percussionists from the local community, the event invites the audience to roam and interact with the musicians, creating a unique, immersive musical experience.

Douglas J. Cuomo's composition is a testament to the power of drumming and music in forging deep, joyful connections among participants. The event will kick off with a pre-concert conversation at 3:00pm with Cuomo and members of Sandbox Percussion, offering insights into the creative process behind this innovative piece.

Sandbox Percussion, a Grammy-nominated ensemble known for their exhilarating performances and dedication to contemporary chamber music, will lead the performance. The group has captivated audiences worldwide with their visually and aurally stunning concerts, and this event promises to be no exception.

In addition to the performance, percussionists and drummers of all skill levels are invited to join Sandbox Percussion for this special day. Participants will have the opportunity to rehearse with the ensemble in the morning and perform alongside them, sharing in the day's rhythmic exploration and community spirit.

In this fiercely contemporary reimagining of Wilhelm Müller’s poetry cycle Winterreise—most famously set by Schubert— composer Douglas J. Cuomo transforms Müller’s lovelorn winter wanderer into a demon-haunted Everyman desperate for atonement, while electric guitar, trumpet, keyboards, and electronics—infused with acid jazz and a punk energy—narrate his delirious fever dream.

Part of Tippet Rise’s new Wander series, the innovative Sandbox Percussion will perform two Tippet Rise Commissions and World Premieres written by composers Amy Beth Kirsten and Douglas J. Cuomo, each written in response to sculptures on the land by artist Mark di Suvero. Beginning at Beethoven’s Quartet, Sandbox Percussion will premiere holy sonnet, a new work by Kirsten, known for her theatrical compositions and described by BBC Music Magazine as “one of America’s most innovative and visionary composers.” From there, musicians and audience members will hike together approximately one mile to Mark di Suvero’s Proverb. The ensemble will then perform a new work entitled Proverb by Douglas J. Cuomo, known for a range of expressive compositions written for the concert, opera, and theatrical stage, as well as for television and film. We are thrilled to welcome Sandbox Percussion, composed of members Jonny Allen, Victor Caccese, Ian Rosenbaum, and Terry Sweeney, back to Tippet Rise for the third time – a group always eager to perform in nature and to explore the many synergies between art and landscape.

Opera Parallèle returns to the Presidio Theatre to present the world premiere of a newly reimagined version of Doubt, the iconic story of suspicion, morality, and shifty power dynamics in a Catholic school. Adapted from John Patrick Shanley’s Oscar-nominated film and Pulitzer Prize-winning play, this contemporary opera features an evocative score by Douglas J. Cuomo. Conceived by Brian Staufenbiel and conducted by Nicole Paiement, this striking new production focuses on the psychological tension between four central characters, creating an intimate, immersive experience. The design, inspired by a church, places the orchestra on stage, making them an active participant in the drama. This inventive, multi-sensory production invites you to step into the narrative as part of the “congregation,” blurring the lines between observer and participant, creating a gripping experience you won’t forget.
