The Philharmonic State Orchestra, from whose ranks the ensembles for six chamber concerts are formed until the summer, spends most of its time in the pit: at the interface between the singing on stage and the music from below. The fact that text and instrumental sound usually go together extraordinarily well is therefore in the orchestra's blood. For an entire season, the interaction of text and music will also be examined in an intimate chamber music setting. How fitting that many members of the State Opera ensemble could be won over for the series. The Hamburg chamber singer Gabriele Rossmanith will be the first to perform.

Chabrier’s irresistibly sweet and funny chamber opera explores the comic predicament of a newly-married couple who don’t know what to do on their wedding night. The first half spotlights two Welsh composers born less than 40 years apart. Grace Williams’s jaunty Concert Overture, written in her mid-twenties, came ‘highly recommended’ after its entry in a Daily Telegraph competition in 1932–3. And Sir Karl Jenkins, one of the most popular composers of our time, wrote his Stravaganza especially for tonight’s soloist, Jess Gillam.

It is followed by the Swedish premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonens latest work, Kínēma. Soloist: principal clarinetist Niklas Andersson. The concert concludes with Ravel’s popular Suite no. 2, based on the ballet Daphnis et Chloé. All under the baton of the young British conductor Ben Glassberg.

Louise Farrenc was a piano virtuoso and trailblazing composer who was the only female to hold a position at the esteemed Paris Conservatory during this time. Her overtures and symphonies have upheld their significance in the standard Romantic repertoire of today. To compliment the French influence, we will close the program with Berlioz’ masterpiece, Symphonie Fantastique. A work that transpired great advancement in the world of orchestration, musical story-telling, and compositional techniques that continue to captivate audiences of all ages today, and the final movement ‘The Witches Sabbath’ will be sure to capture the upcoming Halloween spirit for all!

Wolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) probably discovered the clarinet in 1778 while visiting Mannheim where clarinets had been a part of the orchestra for twenty years. But he didn’t write music featuring the clarinet until after moving to Vienna in 1781 where he met the virtuoso, Anton Stadler. Stadler was the clarinetist Mozart had in mind for virtually all of his most celebrated works with clarinet including the Clarinet Concerto, the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings and the less familiar Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat, K. 498 “The Kegelstatt.” Though not as well-known as its counterparts, it was composed for performance by one of Mozart’s piano students, Franziska von Jacquin, with Mozart playing the viola, and Stadler on clarinet. In the able hands of this ensemble, Mozart was free to write a work for three independent parts allowing each member of the group, especially the piano, to have opportunities for solo display—even the often-neglected viola. The work is exceptional for its unconventional instrumentation, form, and convivial sense of interplay, perhaps due to the origins of the work being composed for a group of intimates in an informal setting. The name, “Kegelstatt,” meaning skittle alley (Skittle is a version of lawn bowling), is probably mistakenly applied to this work but originally intended for the dedication of another work by Mozart.

Mozart completed his five violin concertos between April and December 1775, when he was nineteen years old. This is a chance to hear star violinist Janine Jansen in both his fourth and his fifth concerto. Also music by three French masters from different periods: Farrenc wrote her exuberant Overture No. 2 in 1834, Fauré’s emotional music for Pelléas et Mélisande was composed just before 1900 and Ravel’s evocative Le tombeau de Couperin during and after the First World War.

International violinist Janine Jansen is a recurring guest at Berwaldhallen. She will be interpreting Mozart’s famous violin concerto and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, which he composed in memory of friends that had fallen in the First World War. The concert opens with Louise Farrenc’s exuberant Overture No. 2.

Arguably, anything can happen in a dream, and in Shakespeare, as in life, all is not what it seems! There are dreams that fueled my repertoire choices for our concert and in curating our Season Finale. I had two primary objectives:   to present women composers more prominently and to create an engaging and uplifting program for a spring afternoon.

Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) and Louise Farrenc had everything they needed to reach the forefront of music history: an art-loving family, early musical support, sufficient financial means and, last but not least, enviable talent. There was only one thing they both lacked: the right gender. Fanny, just as brilliant a child prodigy as Felix, bowed for a long time to the will of her younger brother, who was convinced of the then common cliché that women were only capable of composing small, lyrical pieces. However, they lacked the strength for the supreme disciplines such as the string quartet or the symphony. Fanny Hensel's only string quartet, published in the 20th century, is a romantic masterpiece that proves her brother wrong. Louise Farrenc achieved great renown in 19th century Paris as a pianist, composer, and even as a conductor and professor. After her death, she was forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 1980s as part of gender research. Farrenc's string quintet is an arrangement of her popular nonet, which achieved a high level of fame outside France. The occasion on which Farrenc created the string-only version and whether it was ever performed remains a mystery. In addition to these two European women, two contemporary American composers are also in focus: Gabriela Lena Frank, born in California, traces her own roots in her works, which are fed by Peruvian-Chinese-Lithuanian-Jewish influences. In her work "Leyendas," she mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk music traditions. Jessie Montgomery has become a strong voice in American music in the 21st century through her artistic use of improvisation, poetry, and social awareness in her music. One of her latest works will have its premiere in this program.

The Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is a bridge between the form-conscious style of classical music and the individual expressive world of romanticism. Flowing melodies and a refined form have made it one of the most popular works in the repertoire. The fact that Mendelssohn spent six years tirelessly working on it is not noticeable at any point in the music. Bruch’s Violin Concerto No. 1 makes regular appearances in the top 10 of Classic FM’s annual Hall of Fame and its singing lines for the soloist mean it’s widely considered the best violin concerto of all time. Ukrainian Aleksey Semenenko will bring this concerto to life under the baton of Alpesh Chauhan and with the full Ulster Orchestra in support.

John Novacek is well known to San Luis Obispo audiences through performances with Festival Mozaic, and as their 23/24 Artist in Residence.  His acumen for big works will be on full display as he performs Brahms mighty Piano Concerto No.2 in B flat. We open with a work by northern Californian composer, Andre Myers. Myers serves on the composition faculty at Redwood University, and we conclude with Symphony No.3 by mid-nineteenth century French composer, Louise Farrenc. Farrenc served for more than twenty years, as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and was herself a virtuoso pianist. She wrote three symphonies, choral and chamber works as well as many works for the piano.
