The Royal Danish Orchestra’s chamber concerts present celebrated masterpieces alongside rare gems of the chamber music repertoire. Throughout the season, the orchestra’s musicians perform in the historic theatre setting of the Old Stage. The wind quintet has the challenge, as well as the benefit, of bringing together five distinct instruments to explore multiple blends of timbres. Klughardt's work is a beautiful example of great writing for each of the five, and the addition of piano in Louise Farenc's Sextet provides expanded sonic dimensions and is a true tour de force for the pianist. The program is balanced with smaller combinations featuring double reeds, the regal sound of the horn, and upper winds.

Chamber music concerts are an important part of the program. In various formations and ensembles, the musicians of the Orchester der Oper Zürich explore a wide repertoire. At close quarters and in intimate spaces, audiences experience the intensity of the musicians as they make music. Each of the nine chamber music programs in the Spiegelsaal has its own individual focus: classics of the genre meet rarely heard works, and early music meets crossover. The «Zur Premiere» concert series feature programs specially tailored to a corresponding opera premiere.

Trio Confero was founded in 2018 by clarinetist Maksim Shtrykov as a logical continuation of his quest to bring to the larger audience, the superb yet seldom performed chamber music repertoire for clarinet. The journey began in 2012 when, together with his partner Japanese pianist Misuzu Tanaka, they formed the Shtrykov-Tanaka Duo and began touring in the United States garnering an impressive record of instant re-engagements. With the addition of cellist Julia Kang to the Duo, Trio Confero is comprised of three exceptionally talented musicians who are prizewinners of many international competitions and graduates of the world’s most prestigious music academies.

Samuel Lee, winner of the prestigious Malko Competition and former Associate Conductor of the CSO, returns for a sublime evening of music. Louise Farrenc’s Overture No. 2 opens the program with a brief glimpse into the musical world of 19th-century France, which flows into the delicate dances of Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, laced with a tender homage to the French Baroque. The mood deepens with Ravel’s Piano Concerto for the Left Hand, where the soloist’s single hand conjures a world of bold orchestral textures and haunting melodies. Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4, a work of remarkable charm and exuberance, radiates with joy, celebrating the composer’s lighter, yet deeply profound, musical soul.

Among, the brass instruments, the trumpet has a uniquely brilliant sound that immediately grabs the listener’s attention.  Our principal trumpeter, James Sims, will demonstrate the instrument’s unique quality in the short but challenging Concerto in E-flat by Franz Joseph Haydn.   Under the leadership of guest conductor Johannes Debus, the ETSO also brings life to Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony and the second overture of Louise Farrenc.  Concluding the concert is one of the most famous classical works in history: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5.

Since 2010, chamber music ensembles of the Staatskapelle have been performing at the Bode Museum, a jewel of Berlin's museum landscape. Matinee concerts lasting just over an hour in the Gobelin Hall, with diverse programs that include music from the Baroque and Classical periods as well as works from the Romantic and Modern periods, can easily lead into further hours in the museum—for example, with a guided tour of the exhibition and the "Artwork of the Day," a private tour, or a culinary finale in the stylish museum café.

The unique and startling architectural art has been called wow architecture, and the word is a good way to describe the music of the Frenchman Guillaume Connesson. Connesson's Flute Concerto No. 2 is subtitled Danses concertantes, "Concert Dances", which ecstatically push through the boundaries of style and genre. Tapiola Sinfonietta is one of the commissioners of this exciting new work, and the soloist will be Emily Beynon, principal flutist of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Swedish Malin Broman has been concertmaster of the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra since 2008, and she also has an international career as a soloist and conductor. She takes on both roles at this concert, where she is the soloist in Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1. 2025 sees the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, so in celebration of his life we take his firecracker Ninth Symphony on the road to Aberystwyth and Bangor this March. Small in scale, but full of humour this symphony came as a surprise to everyone at its premiere, with its touches of slapstick, jaunty themes and spirited dance-like feel.

John Novacek is well known to San Luis Obispo audiences through performances with Festival Mozaic, and as their 23/24 Artist in Residence.  His acumen for big works will be on full display as he performs Brahms mighty Piano Concerto No.2 in B flat. We open with a work by northern Californian composer, Andre Myers. Myers serves on the composition faculty at Redwood University, and we conclude with Symphony No.3 by mid-nineteenth century French composer, Louise Farrenc. Farrenc served for more than twenty years, as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and was herself a virtuoso pianist. She wrote three symphonies, choral and chamber works as well as many works for the piano.

When it comes to piano playing, challenges don’t get much bigger than Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto – the so-called ‘Everest of Piano Concertos’. There’s a special thrill in hearing a true champion tackle its grand, romantic heights, and as winner of the 2023 Scottish International Piano Competition, Jonathan Mamora is certainly that! With Lionel Bringuier conducting, this concert will be electric, from Louise Farrenc’s powerful overture to Bartók’s technicolour workout for the whole band: the explosive Concerto for Orchestra.

RSNO Season 24-25: Rachmaninov’s Third Piano Concerto

Francis Poulenc, the real joker of the Groupe des Six, created a precious treasure of five works for the woodwinds - the sextet, a trio and a sonata each for flute, clarinet and bassoon. With the sparkling Sextuor for piano and winds, a showcase for the "musical prose" sought by the Six, he thrusts us into the heart of the pulsating life of his hometown of Paris. The three-movement piece was completed in 1932, but was thoroughly revised in 1939 for the performance with Poulenc himself at the piano. At the beginning it sounds like the Grands Boulevards, everything is noisy, running, honking, shouting and whirling around, and immediately the woodwinds are allowed to bring their entire arsenal of modern acrobatics into play. The fifth concert of the season is imbued with feminine energy. The orchestra has invited the star New Zealand conductor Gemma New, who will present the Overture No. 2 by the 19th-century French composer Louise Farrenc. Given the social classification and the limited women's rights at the time, Farrenc was an extraordinary phenomenon. Not only did she manage to study composition in addition to the piano, taking private lessons with Antonín Rejcha, but she also succeeded in having her work, which includes three symphonies in addition to numerous chamber pieces, performed on international concert stages.
