2025 sees the 50th anniversary of Shostakovich’s death, so in celebration of his life we take his firecracker Ninth Symphony on the road to Aberystwyth and Bangor this March. Small in scale, but full of humour this symphony came as a surprise to everyone at its premiere, with its touches of slapstick, jaunty themes and spirited dance-like feel.

John Novacek is well known to San Luis Obispo audiences through performances with Festival Mozaic, and as their 23/24 Artist in Residence.  His acumen for big works will be on full display as he performs Brahms mighty Piano Concerto No.2 in B flat. We open with a work by northern Californian composer, Andre Myers. Myers serves on the composition faculty at Redwood University, and we conclude with Symphony No.3 by mid-nineteenth century French composer, Louise Farrenc. Farrenc served for more than twenty years, as professor of composition at the Paris Conservatoire, and was herself a virtuoso pianist. She wrote three symphonies, choral and chamber works as well as many works for the piano.

Francis Poulenc, the real joker of the Groupe des Six, created a precious treasure of five works for the woodwinds - the sextet, a trio and a sonata each for flute, clarinet and bassoon. With the sparkling Sextuor for piano and winds, a showcase for the "musical prose" sought by the Six, he thrusts us into the heart of the pulsating life of his hometown of Paris. The three-movement piece was completed in 1932, but was thoroughly revised in 1939 for the performance with Poulenc himself at the piano. At the beginning it sounds like the Grands Boulevards, everything is noisy, running, honking, shouting and whirling around, and immediately the woodwinds are allowed to bring their entire arsenal of modern acrobatics into play. The middle movement is more idyllic, before the fast section suddenly seems to be a fairground bustle. The work concludes with a hymnic declaration of love to the Seine metropolis.

The Violin Concerto by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy is a bridge between the form-conscious style of classical music and the individual expressive world of romanticism. Flowing melodies and a refined form have made it one of the most popular works in the repertoire. The fact that Mendelssohn spent six years tirelessly working on it is not noticeable at any point in the music. The virtuoso solo part is in the best hands with Hilary Hahn, who is valued worldwide for her perfect technique and musicality. Peter Tchaikovsky struggled with his fate. His "Fifth" with the omnipresent "fate motif" is the musical blueprint of his inner soul drama. During the composition, he was often overcome by doubts, he questioned his work as a composer and was of the opinion until the end that his Symphony No. 5 was a failure. Audiences, orchestras and conductors like Lahav Shani are convinced of the opposite.

Fanny Hensel (née Mendelssohn) and Louise Farrenc had everything they needed to reach the forefront of music history: an art-loving family, early musical support, sufficient financial means and, last but not least, enviable talent. There was only one thing they both lacked: the right gender. Fanny, just as brilliant a child prodigy as Felix, bowed for a long time to the will of her younger brother, who was convinced of the then common cliché that women were only capable of composing small, lyrical pieces. However, they lacked the strength for the supreme disciplines such as the string quartet or the symphony. Fanny Hensel's only string quartet, published in the 20th century, is a romantic masterpiece that proves her brother wrong. Louise Farrenc achieved great renown in 19th century Paris as a pianist, composer, and even as a conductor and professor. After her death, she was forgotten and was only rediscovered in the 1980s as part of gender research. Farrenc's string quintet is an arrangement of her popular nonet, which achieved a high level of fame outside France. The occasion on which Farrenc created the string-only version and whether it was ever performed remains a mystery. In addition to these two European women, two contemporary American composers are also in focus: Gabriela Lena Frank, born in California, traces her own roots in her works, which are fed by Peruvian-Chinese-Lithuanian-Jewish influences. In her work "Leyendas," she mixes elements of western classical and Andean folk music traditions. Jessie Montgomery has become a strong voice in American music in the 21st century through her artistic use of improvisation, poetry, and social awareness in her music. One of her latest works will have its premiere in this program.

The Philharmonic State Orchestra, from whose ranks the ensembles for six chamber concerts are formed until the summer, spends most of its time in the pit: at the interface between the singing on stage and the music from below. The fact that text and instrumental sound usually go together extraordinarily well is therefore in the orchestra's blood. For an entire season, the interaction of text and music will also be examined in an intimate chamber music setting. Louise Farrenc was the first woman to receive a piano professorship at the renowned Paris Conservatory. Born in 1804 into a family of artists belonging to the Parisian Bohème, she was supported in her musical career from a young age. Her popularity as a composer was rather unusual in the male-dominated musical world of the 19th century. Her music was performed, published and discussed in reviews. Encouraged by the premiere of her Nonet, in which the star violinist Joseph Joachim was performing, she insisted upon receiving the same salary from the conservatory as her male colleagues - with success. Clara Schumann was only 15 years younger than Farrenc and her Trio op. 17 from 1846 is her greatest work of chamber music. As her husband Robert had not yet composed a classical trio at the time, she was able to express herself freely in this area without being exposed to the often inhibiting comparison with her husband. Her trio captivates with expressive themes and a touching melancholy. The concert opens with the yearning sounds of the trio composed by Charles Koechlin around 1900, who was a fellow student of Maurice Ravel at the famous Paris Conservatory.

Hear Judith Weir’s Heroic Strokes of the Bow, inspired by a work of the same name by Paul Klee, take the score-like composition of Klee’s painting literally, carving out thick passages of song from restless strings and clamorous woodwind. Then we will explore J. S. Bach’s “Little Fugue” in G minor with an arrangement by Music Director Hersh himself. Additionally, the winners of the Central Oregon Symphony Association Young Artist Competition will be featured in this concert. Winners and repertoire will be announced in December 2023.

The Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra plays the sadly neglected French composer Louise Farrenc’s exuberant Overture no. 1. It is followed by the Swedish premiere of Esa-Pekka Salonens latest work, Kínēma. Soloist: principal clarinetist Niklas Andersson. The concert concludes with Ravel’s popular Suite no. 2, based on the ballet Daphnis et Chloé. All under the baton of the young British conductor Ben Glassberg.

"A new serious work always attracts great attention, but if its author turns out to be a woman who spurns the easy successes of superficial compositions [...]" (Thérèse Wartel, 1850). The French composer's overture opens the first concert of the "Artist in Residence" Stefan Dohr. The principal horn player of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra is shaping the concert program of the season and introduces himself to the Braunschweig audience with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Horn Concerto, which he dedicated to the horn player Joseph Leutgeb and wrote specifically for him, with excellent knowledge of the instrument's possibilities, highly virtuosic and ideally suited to the opening of the residence.

Our season opener ‘Celebrating A New Season!’ features cello sensation Nicholas Canellakis ("impassioned... with the audience seduced by Mr. Canellakis's rich, alluring tone" -The New York Times) in the Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1 and continues to honor the progressive orchestral tradition of 19th century France. Louise Farrenc was a piano virtuoso and trailblazing composer who was the only female to hold a position at the esteemed Paris Conservatory during this time. Her overtures and symphonies have upheld their significance in the standard Romantic repertoire of today. To compliment the French influence, we will close the program with Berlioz’ masterpiece, Symphonie Fantastique. A work that transpired great advancement in the world of orchestration, musical story-telling, and compositional techniques that continue to captivate audiences of all ages today, and the final movement ‘The Witches Sabbath’ will be sure to capture the upcoming Halloween spirit for all!

Wolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) probably discovered the clarinet in 1778 while visiting Mannheim where clarinets had been a part of the orchestra for twenty years. But he didn’t write music featuring the clarinet until after moving to Vienna in 1781 where he met the virtuoso, Anton Stadler. Stadler was the clarinetist Mozart had in mind for virtually all of his most celebrated works with clarinet including the Clarinet Concerto, the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings and the less familiar Trio for Piano, Clarinet and Viola in E-flat, K. 498 “The Kegelstatt.” Though not as well-known as its counterparts, it was composed for performance by one of Mozart’s piano students, Franziska von Jacquin, with Mozart playing the viola, and Stadler on clarinet. In the able hands of this ensemble, Mozart was free to write a work for three independent parts allowing each member of the group, especially the piano, to have opportunities for solo display—even the often-neglected viola. The work is exceptional for its unconventional instrumentation, form, and convivial sense of interplay, perhaps due to the origins of the work being composed for a group of intimates in an informal setting. The name, “Kegelstatt,” meaning skittle alley (Skittle is a version of lawn bowling), is probably mistakenly applied to this work but originally intended for the dedication of another work by Mozart.

Mozart completed his five violin concertos between April and December 1775, when he was nineteen years old. This is a chance to hear star violinist Janine Jansen in both his fourth and his fifth concerto. Also music by three French masters from different periods: Farrenc wrote her exuberant Overture No. 2 in 1834, Fauré’s emotional music for Pelléas et Mélisande was composed just before 1900 and Ravel’s evocative Le tombeau de Couperin during and after the First World War.

International violinist Janine Jansen is a recurring guest at Berwaldhallen. She will be interpreting Mozart’s famous violin concerto and Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin, which he composed in memory of friends that had fallen in the First World War. The concert opens with Louise Farrenc’s exuberant Overture No. 2.
