Created with Wigmore Hall’s Director, John Gilhooly, the chamber ensemble comprises a roster of outstanding musicians led by Michael Collins and Isabelle van Keulen. Here it takes up the cause of the neglected Anglo-French George Onslow, alongside the German Louis Spohr (1784-1859) and the Italian double bass virtuoso Giovanni Bottesini (1821-89).

With Louis Spohr's Notturno op. 34, a work dedicated to the court of Sondershausen returns to its destination. Here, Spohr continued the great tradition of harmony music in the royal city. By using percussion instruments, which had come to Europe as "Janissary music" during the Turkish wars, he also sets striking rhythmic accents. Then the strings take the floor. Leoš Janáček's seven-movement string suite "Idyla" impressively shows the fascination that the folk music of his homeland exerted on the 24-year-old. Dvořák echoes are no coincidence here, as Janáček had recently gotten to know and appreciate his colleague, who was 13 years older.

The three most familiar members of the chamber music family—winds, strings, and piano—join forces for a program rich in sonorities and cultural variety. Bohuslav Martinů, who inherited the mantle of Dvořák to become the most famous Czech composer of his day, left a huge catalog of chamber music. The Austrian Ludwig Thuille excelled in opera but his chamber music is now making a well-deserved comeback. And Germany’s Ludwig Spohr, one of his era’s greatest violinists, composed prolifically and skillfully for all combinations of chamber ensembles, the nonet is among his finest compositions.

Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's "Double Quartet for Strings," a CMS commission from 1984, headlines the event, showcasing the blend of modern and traditional elements that characterizes Zwilich's work. The program also includes Louis Spohr's "Double Quartet No. 1 in D minor for Strings, Op. 65," Max Bruch's "Octet for Strings," and Olli Mustonen's "Nonet II for Four Violins, Two Violas, Two Cellos, and Bass," adding layers of historical depth and contemporary brilliance to the evening.

The performance will feature an ensemble of distinguished artists, including violinists Francisco Fullana, Ani Kavafian, Kristin Lee, and Julian Rhee; violists Paul Neubauer and James Thompson; cellists Dmitri Atapine and Mihai Marica; and double bassist Nina Bernat. Each musician brings their unique expertise and passion to the stage, promising an unforgettable auditory experience.
